It is time for Tony to recruit some ALPHAS.

I have felt this way for several years now. In recruiting to the pillars, Tony is packing the roster with passive, role players. I love Reece Beekman to pieces, but does anyone think he has Ty Jerome’s raw passion for the game? Would you have wanted to face Ty or Kyle after a game where you did not play your ass off? I think they willed the more passive kids to play their hearts out.

We need to put together a big-time NIL package for Chance Mallory and then let him COOK. This kid has the contagious passion that our team craves. Go get him, Tony, and loosen the reins.

Ference and Didawick lead Virginia's offense to a 16 - 4 win over VMI

Ference was 5 for 6 with 3 doubles and 5 RBI, and Didawick was 4 for 5 , 1 walk, and 4 RBI as Virginia had 19 hits. Several players came of the bench and added to the offense. Teel had the only home run for the Cavs. McKay started and pitched well; he went 6 innings and gave up just 3 hits and 1 run while striking out 6 to get the win. Augustine, Buchanan, and Hungate did not give up any runs in relief.

Commitment! UVa lands 2025 4-star ATH Christopher Spence

UVa's 2025 class keeps rolling, as 4-star athlete Chris (CJ) Spence announced his commitment to UVa this morning on Twitter. He visited UVa earlier this month, and made his commitment official today. This is UVa's second four star in the 2025 class, and the Hoos got Spence over a bunch of offers (Michigan, VT, FSU, others).

Basketball Ball Team has gotten Flipped

Tony plan is to play great defense and make opponents take tough shots. In addition the shooting rhythm is screwed up for them. Next he tries to wear other team out by chasing UVA for over 20 seconds. Last thing is don’t let them drive to basket and score.

Unfortunately this team has plan flipped on them. Teams are playing tough defense by face guarding our under 2 - three point shooters. Then they are zoning the other 3 players. This lets them stop the threes and drives.

Consequentially UVA gets few open looks and has to force shots late in the clock.

On offense the opponents have inside scoring and more outside three point shooters. The UVA players are totally exhausted by middle of second half.

Hope this makes some sense.iI tried.

Breaking Down UVa's Shooting Woes vs UNC

On this morning's rewatch, I went back and looked at all of UVa's three-point attempts to try and figure out how many were quality looks. I'd also say I didn't see many shots that weren't taken from three that should have been (Rohde had a good look in the first half but didn't even consider shooting). Many of McKneely's touches were well outside shooting range in the flow of the offense, and Groves was contested most of the time, and ended up taking some questionable shots. Below, I've broken down all of UVa's three point attempts in yesterday's game and tried to categorize them into good, decent and bad looks.

Here are the first-half attempts, where UVa went 0/6 as a team:

ATTEMPT #1, ROHDE MISS:
Open look, but deep, back iron (UVA 0/1)

ATTEMPT #2, MCKNEELY MISS: Comes back to the ball (no screen), takes contested, relatively deep look. Clean look, contested by a smaller player (UVA 0/2)

ATTEMPT #3, ROHDE MISS: Wide open on inbounds play, someone lost their man. Brick. (UVA 0/3)

ATTEMPT #4, GERTRUDE MISS: Cadeau helped on McKneely drive and left Gertrude with a decent look (UVA 0/4)

1708870359087.png

ATTEMPT #5, GERTRUDE MISS: Extra help on Beekman drive allows Gertrude a wide open three that he can’t hit. UVa did get the rebound and put-back, though. (UVA 0/5)

ATTEMPT #6, MCKNEELY MISS: Quick shot in transition, hand-off from Beekman. Not a bad look for IMac, just didn’t connect on it. But not exactly in the flow of the offense, either. Gertrude ended up getting fouled on the rebound but this was a potential swing point in the game, had the 3 gone in. (UVA 0/6)

Virginia baseball completes a perfect day for the Hoos with 6 - 4 win over Auburn

The softball team had two shutout victories, 1-0 over Iowa State and 5-0 over Delaware. The women's basketball team upset Louisville 73 - 68 on the road. Louisville women also lost the tennis match 6 - 1. Lastly, both lacrosse teams won; the women defeated Cornell 20 - 11, and the men won over Ohio State 14 - 8.

Every starter for Virginia except Ford had at least one hit, and O'Ferrall, Stephon, and Didawick had two hits each. Saucke, Hanson, and Whalen each had a double and a RBi. Coady started and pitched 3.2 innings and gave up four hits and two runs, only one of which was earned. Jaxel followed on the mound and pitched 2.2 innings and allowed one hit and one run; he was the winning pitcher. Tonas followed for 1.2 innings and gave up one hit and one run. Teel pitched the shutout 9th and allowed one hit. He was credited with his third save this season.

Virginia RB Jeffrey Overton Jr schedules UVa visit

2025 ATH Jeffrey Overton Jr has scheduled an official visit to Virginia, the Woodbridge (VA) native announced on Thursday via his X account. The three-star prospect is one of the Cavs top targets on their board and is being recruited as a running back. He'll take his official visit on June 7-9.

Overton first picked up an offer from Virginia last March and has remained in consistent contact with the Cavs coaching staff including running backs coach Keith Gaither. The 'Hoos were able to host Overton for a Junior Day visit in late January, one that helped keep the program near the top of Overton Jr's list. He has also picked up visits from Penn State and Ohio State in recent months.

All in all, Overton has 15 scholarship offers which include Duke, Maryland, North Carolina State, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, West Virginia, and of course, the 'Hoos. He also recently announced he'll be taking an official visit to Virginia Tech on June 21-23.

MLAX Virginia defeated Ohio State 14 - 8

The Virginia offense got off to a good start and led 6-1 and ended the first two quarters up 10-3. Ohio State won the face off battle 26-14. Virginia had 4 penalties for 180 seconds, and the Buckeyes had 1 penalty for 60 seconds. Nunes was excellent in goal both blocking shots and making long clearing passes. The offense was led by Millon (3 goals and 3 assists), Shellenberger (2 goals and 3 assists), Cormier (2 goals and 1 assist), and Colsey (2 goals).

My Observations

Remember, these are my thoughts. Maybe I’m right, maybe I’m wrong.

I feel it is obvious that the portal system has hurt TB and his coaching. We have failed to bring in impact players, however, we lose plenty. We did well with transfers back in the day with players like Anthony Gill. But the portal transfer system is a totally different animal than the old transfer rules. We could fill that final piece. We are having to do rebuilds through this current system. It does not help that most of our transfers in are total misses. That does not work with Tony’s style. Our best teams are the ones that have plyers here for 3 or 4 years. Our problem is that we have so many kids that leave after 1 year of not playing. In many cases, sitting behind inferior performing players. This leaves us in quite the quandary. Rebuilds with 2-4 players per year that have to learn our defense will not work. Well, at least it hasn’t. I would rather have a team of 9 3 stars that stay all 4 years, with 1 or 2 four stars, than a team of transfer outs. We have always been handicapped by style of play, now this. Not sure of the answer with our current set up. And yeah, I know that Tony has forgotten more than I will ever know, and while true, he should see this as well. Its a tough cycle that we have gotten ourselves in. How do we fix it??

When you starting lineup is shooting 8-35 from the floor and most are either layup misses or short jumper fails you really have stunk it up.

This squad two games in a row haven't showed up; then you throw in Harris who was 1-4 and Gertrude both got minutes was 1-7 this was not a good outing.

Bennett can be frustrating to see him ignore the number of brick shots after brick shots and he flat refused to bring Bond or Murray who can hit 3pt shots off the bench. I believe Murray had what a total of 1:55 and never got to take a shot.

ACC Swimming Champs - Gretchen Walsh = 4 nights, 4 American Records

With perhaps more to come the next couple of days...

While Worlds are a bit "watered down" this Olympic year since several top swimmers from the US and Australia chose not to attend in their own preparation for Olympic Trials, it's still proving to be a very fast and competitive meet with many top swimmers you'll see in Paris 2024.

UVA continues to rep on the world stage as Curzan has won 3 Gold medals (2 individual in 100 and 50 Back and 1 relay gold) along with 1 Silver in 100 Fly.

Douglass has won 2 Gold medals so far (200 IM Individual and 1 relay).

Douglass is a gold medal favorite in the 200 Breast and in medal contention for the 100 Free, though it's a tough double as both of those event finals swim almost back-to-back tomorrow night.

Jack Aikins won a Bronze medal as part of the US 4x100 Free relay as well.

The Walsh sisters chose not to attend this year as the US took a small women's team, but both of their Olympic prospects are bright as well.

Virginia's rallies lead to 12-9 win over Iowa

Virginia fell behind 6-0 in the bottom of the first. Virginia scored twice in the third but allowed another run to make the score 7 -2, and then the Hoos scored 5 times in the 4th and Iowa added another run for a 8-7 lead. The score held until the 7th when a Virginia run knotted the score at 8 each. Both teams scored one run in the 8th. Virginia scored 3 runs in the 9th, 2 of which scored on a 2 out single by Ford. The Virginia offense was led by Anderson, who had a home run and 2 RBI. Ford was 2 for 4 with 2 walks and 2 RBI; Saucke was 3 for 6 with 3 RBI, and Godbout was 4 for 5.
O'Connor had a rough start on the mound but the relievers, especially Woolfolk and Barker, pitched well.

Point guard next year

I rewatched the game and I wonder if TB will look for an experienced point guard in the portal. Harris is not it and I really don't want to go into next year with a redshirt freshman as our point guard. I don't see anyone else on the team that can run the point except those two for any real length of time. Also I don't want EG to play to much point he is a natural two guard.
