Virginia extends two win streaks in 60 - 38 humbling of Miami

Virginia has the nation's longest home floor win streak at 23 and continued their win streak against ACC opponents. Beekman was the leading scorer with 16 points and led the team with 7 assists. His 6 baskets and 7 assists accounted for half of the Cavs' 26 made shots. Groves added 12 points, and Dunn led the rebounders with 8. McKneely contributed 9 points and 6 rebounds. The team defense held Miami to 28.6% field goal shooting on 14 of 49 with just 2 of 20 made three point shots. Miami had a five point lead in the first 5 minutes before Virginia went on a run to lead 29 - 17 at the half.

Preview: UVa is back at home tonight to host Miami

Preview: Coming off a short turnaround, UVa is back at home tonight when the Hoos host Miami (7 p.m., ESPN). As the Cavaliers put a pair of winning streaks on the line, @justin ferber previews the matchup against the Hurricanes.

Virginia wins an important squeaker at Clemson 66-65

The win keeps Virginia in no less than third place tie in the ACC standings and helps with the metrics. Once again, Beekman (17), McKneely (14), and Groves (14) led the scoring for Virginia. Dunn (10) and Minor (9) were important in the Cavs 38 to 33 advantage on the boards. The rebounding made up for the advantage that Clemson had in trips to the foul line (21 - 13). Beekman had 4 of Virginia's 9 assists and all 3 of the team's steals.

UVA ladies team had their chance and blew it down the stretch against Clemson. So many turnovers and just overall poor defensive hustle; 3pt D; bad!

I'm a big fan of the ladies team but if one was honest you would say our inability to cut people off driving the lane was the understatement. Clark for as tall and thin she is extremely slow when it comes to getting in front of her man. Also slow getting out to cover 3pt shooters that had a field day on us.

But she wasn't alone and McGhee loses her player on a routine basis giving away easy shots. Both have issues with turning over the ball and bad passes.

One of the other things is we have to get players in maybe off the portal this upcoming season that can rebound and hold onto the ball once it's in their hands. We had several times with two or three players under the rim for the rebound and it hit them in the hands like Edward Scissor hands and go right to a Clemson player right beside them and either made the put back or drew a foul.

Also the FT shooting seems to be a curse for both the men's team and ladies team. Paris Clark steps up and bricks both free throws and Clemson is hitting most of their's.

FEB 1st

I said a couple or more weeks ago , that come FEB that this team would not be the same team that had some of our board members on the ledge LOL. I just have to ask does this team resemble the same team 2 & 1/2 weeks ago. I actually said in that post that it would be the middle of FEB. I don't remember who but someone commented that the middle of FEB would be too late to make the Tournament. I have a felling that we will make the Tournament after all . GO HOOS!!!!!

With this starting lineup?

What is our ceiling if CTB goes to a starting lineup of Reece, IMac, Dunn, Groves, and Minor? I think we become more offensively potent to start games. I also believe it puts other guys in definite backup roles, and allows Murray more minutes spelling Dunn or Groves, and opens backup minutes for Gertrude behind IMac and allows him to play off ball and just attack with Harris spelling Reece.

One of the strangest stats I can remember seeing

is how McKneely is shooting 48% from three point range and just 40% overall. His two point percentage is just 31% (27 out of 86). It befuddles me how someone can shoot so well from deep, yet be so poor closer to the basket. His three point shots are as contested, if not more, than his two point shots. He has a nice jump shot and gets good elevation (like Guy would), but just cannot hit it this year. He should easily be up around 14 pts per game if he could hit a respectable number of two point shots.

Groves came off the bench to jump start Virginia to 65-53 win over Notre Dame

Virginia got off to a sluggish start, but the situation improved when Groves hit 5 of 6 three pointers in the first half. He added another in the second half to finish the game 6 of 8, and his 18 points were second to Beekman, who made 4 of 7 from deep and scored 21 points. McKneely was 3 of 5 from behind the arc and added 11 points to the books. These three scored all of Virginia's three point shots, and the team ended with 13 of 25. Beekman also led the team with 6 assists and 4 steals. In spite of the shooting by the Cavs, Notre Dame was even better percentage wise, but Virginia had 10 more attempts primarily because Virginia forced 10 more turnovers. The win moved Virginia into 3rd place in the ACC standings.
