NCAA brackets

I hope we end up in Purdue’s bracket. I’m assuming we’re a 4/5 seed and Purdue is a 1. Obviously we’d have to beat a 12/13 and 4/5 first. I feel better about CTB scheming to slow down Edey, and Purdue’s guards aren’t spectacular. Bama, Houston, Kansas seem more daunting. It’s all about matchups. Here’s one bracket from today. Though I’m thinking Duke will move up into this.

Saw that Duke will only be shooting free throws today in practice; sent up the red flag, more homecoming tonight?LOL

When I saw that Duke was only going to focus on shooting Free throws only today in practice, I immediately laughed cause my investigative slant threw up the old antenna/red flag.

I couldn't help having a reflexive reaction from years of home cooking style officiating in Tobacco Road Tourneys. My mind was wondering did the ACC officiating crew for tonight already get the call down from the ACC bosses?

I can see the return of the same style officiating in this Championship game with Duke as the UNC game where Duke will be going to the line frequently tonight, especially in the second half with 8 to 10 minutes left in the game.

I could see Shedrick and Caffaro with foul issues with 7 or 8 minutes to go in the game tonight, if officiating history down in Duke country is a template to what to expect tonight.

Call me a little paranoid, but I just have a long memory of Duke last minute wins especially when refs suddenly have bad eye sight, COPD issues on blowing their whistles, or honestly turning a blind eye for the hometown boys.

I'm really hoping we can over come all the tic tac calls, ghost calls and nail the free throws IF we get to the line. I could see a 3 to 1 foul call ratio on us tonight if history is the marker to what's to come.

It will take a near perfect game this time around to beat Duke with 3 extra players on the floor tonight.

Virginia takes second game at UNC 8 - 4

There were 4 innings of frustration for Virginia followed by 5 innings of fun. The Heels scored 3 runs in the first inning on 4 hits as Virginia was 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position in the first 4 innings. We then scored 2 in the 5th, 1 in the 6th, 3 in the 7th, and 2 in the 8th. UNC did not score after the 1st inning until they tallied 1 run in the 8th. The Cavs were led at the plate by Anderson who had 3 RBi on a 4 for 5 day; Saucke was 3 for 5 with 1 RBi; Godbout was 2 for 5 with 1 RBi; Teel was 2 for 5 and scored 3 times; and O'Donnell was 2 for 6 with the only home run of the game. Virginia had 15 hits in the game with 12 singles and 2 doubles to go with the home run.
Edgington pitched 5.2 innings and gave up 3 runs on 7 hits. Hodorovich came in and pitched 1.1 innings without allowing a hit or run ( I assume that he got credit for the win); Woolfolk pitched the final 2 innings and gave up the final run on 1 hit and 3 walks.

Preview: A Duke/UVa rematch for the ACC title

Preview: A rematch for the championship is on tap tonight in Greensboro as Duke and UVa face off for the title (8:30 p.m., ESPN). @justin ferber breaks it down ahead of what could be a classic ACC Tournament finale.

It was a hit or miss game for Virginia, but Cavs win 7-3

Virginia batters struck out 18 times but got 13 hits including home runs by O'Donnell and Gelof. O'Ferrall led Virginia with 3 hits, and Gelof, Saucke, and Anderson each had 2 hits. Parker started on the mound for Virginia and gave up 5 hits including a 2 run home run in the 2nd. Tonas came in to pitch in the 5th with 2 runners on base and 0 outs and kept the Heels from scoring. Berry relieved Tonas and pitched the last three innings and gave up 1 unearned run; he struck out the side in the 9th.

Gardner

I have been extremely impressed with Gardners defense, especially when we decide to double the center. He's very quick to close in on the double team with excellent position. He then separates quickly when the post player picks up his dribble and sprints to his original front court player without over running. By that I mean he still maintains excellent position between himself and the basket preventing an easy blow by. His feet are very quick for a big guy.

While he hasn't got a lot of attention for his defense, he should.

Cavs were not perfect, but they were good to excellent in every aspect

This is the first game that I can remember when we had no negative in the +/- for any player. Clemson has proven to have a good inside game, but even though both teams had 11 offensive rebounds, Virginia had 40 points in the paint compared to 22 points for Clemson. Gardner is playing his way into MVP consideration as he was the team leader in points (23) and rebounds (12). Even players who did not have their best game had reason to be happy. Beekman did not shoot well, but he had 7 assists, which was just 2 less than the entire Clemson team, and his 21 in the +/- was second only to Clark's 25. It was a fun game to watch, and I wish that I had seen it in person.

Why we won

On a night when our three starting guards hit just 2 of 11 attempted shots from beyond the arc, a primary reason for our win was once again defense. UNC has not excelled in ball handling this year, and Virginia made the most of the opportunities afforded by the Tar Heels. Virginia had 6 turnovers, and Carolina scored 2 points on these chances; Virginia forced 11 Carolina turnovers and scored 14 points. While Caffaro and Shedrick were not stat stuffers on offense (they had a combined 8 points and 3 rebounds), they helped limit a gimpy Bacot to 4 points and 3 rebounds, and Shedrick had 5 blocks. Gardner also stepped up a he led the Cavs with 10 rebounds and 17 points, which included 7 of 8 free throws. Lastly, Beekman stood out on both ends of the court; he had 5 assists with 0 turnovers and helped limit Love to just 3 for 15 shooting.

got me thinking. As much as we hate to think about it, the day will come when TB departs. As schools with national championship and many FF banners, I don’t think any of the 4 mentioned went the right route.

When the day does come, what profile would you prefer we follow for TB’s replacement?

Football Recruiting Potential

The Athletic staff ranked all P5 schools based on recruiting potential. UVA finished 65 of 69 beating only BC, WSU, Kansas, and Syracuse. In the ACC, Clemson was 8th, Miami 11th, and FSU 18th. Duke was 62 and Wake was 59.
College football recruiting rankings: Which Power 5 schools have the most potential?
65. Virginia The Cavaliers are stuck in the ACC with rigorous academic requirements and a mostly average history. Penn State has also been plucking top players out of Virginia, something Tony Elliott’s staff will need to change. — GR
