Atkins

Not sure why this would not have already been posted here but evidently Darien Atkins played extremely well FE Portsmith invitational it's possible he may receive an invitation to the Chicago work out for NBA hopefuls. From what I heard he averaged A double double. 20 pets and 10 Rebs.

Rough day of baseball

UVA lost both games of the doubleheader today on walk-off HRs to NCSU. Game 1 was a 4-3 loss and Game 2 was a 5-3 loss in 10 innings.

That leaves UVA at 10-14 in the ACC with two more series (Duke and @ UNC). We need to go 5-1 over the next two series to get to .500 in the ACC.

These two games today really really hurt. Making the ACCT is priority #1 right now.

Video: Brown's confidence returned this spring

After being plagued by injuries in calendar 2014, sophomore defensive tackle Andrew Brown appears to be back on track going into the summer in Charlottesville. Coming into spring ball in perhaps the best shape of his life, the 6-foot-4, 290-pound DT made a lot of noise in practices and eventually the Spring Game, where was credited with 6 tackles (3.5 for loss) and 0.5 sacks.

In this video interview, the Chesapeake native talks about maturing over the last year. He also talked about preparing for competition at defensive tackle this fall and says that in terms of his approach, nothing will change. Brown also goes in depth about how it was that he came to shed the bad weight and add the muscle that he needs in order to play with better leverage and also play faster. He credits boxing for much of the gains he made this offseason and says all of it made it so that his confidence could start to come back.

Fairchild telecon notes...

Getting started on the telecon with OC Steve Fairchild.

Asked about Matt Johns being the No. 1 QB and if it's a fluid situation, Fairchild said that it very much is. If they were playing a game tomorrow, this is what it would look like. He said they still have a long ways to go before they have to play and they all have a lot of work to do.

When they charted every play and looked at TD drives and ball security, Johns' overall grade was higher than Greyson Lambert and was more productive. Fairchild said he thought that Johns deserved at this point to be the starter.

On YACs being a point of emphasis for the QB, Fairchild said accuracy can turn a short pass into a long pass and last year, they weren't as explosive as they could have been. Accuracy was a part of the equation in Johns being listed No. 1.

How far can they go into fall camp before announcing a starter? Fairchild said you want to make it as soon as you can but that's the case for every position.

Is it frustrating that neither QB has grabbed the spot? Fairchild said that you'd like to have one clear guy but he thought both guys got better this spring.

Asked about the Spring Game, Fairchild said it wasn't as good as the other scrimmages/live period. They charted more than 600 plays over the course of the spring.

More coming...

Baseball: Hoos drop pair of games at NC State

From UVa:

Virginia Falls in Doubleheader at NC State
Wolfpack scores pair of walk-off wins to take series

NC State won on a pair of walk-off home runs to sweep a Sunday doubleheader with the Virginia baseball team at Doak Field at Dail Park in Raleigh, N.C. The Wolfpack (23-18, 11-12 ACC) won the first game, 4-3, and the nightcap, 5-3 in 10 innings, to take the series, two games to one. Virginia dropped to 27-17 (10-14 ACC) with the pair of tough defeats.

Matt Thaiss (So., Jackson, N.J.) had three hits in the second game and totaled four in the doubleheader as he finished with seven hits and seven RBI in the series. Robbie Coman (Jr., Lake Worth, Fla.) recorded two hits in the nightcap as well as three for the day.

The Cavaliers had their share of chances throughout the doubleheader and had runners on the basepaths in 17 of 19 innings, leaving 22 runners on base over the course of the twinbill.

Game 1:
NC State’s Bubby Riley hit a two-out, walk-off home run to center field in the ninth inning to lift the Wolfpack to a 4-3 win in Game 1 of the doubleheader. It was NC State’s first hit since the first inning as UVa had fought back from a 3-0 first-inning deficit.

UVa’s Tommy Doyle (Fr., Vienna, Va.) allowed the walk-off home run and took the loss, falling to 1-1 on the season. Virginia starter Brandon Waddell (Jr., Houston, Texas) pitched a season-high seven innings, giving up three earned runs, four hits and three walks while striking out eight. Waddell did not allow a base hit after the first inning in one of his best performances of the season.

NC State reliever Will Gilbert (1-1) earned the win after firing three innings of scoreless relief. Wolfpack starter Cory Wilder worked four-plus innings, allowing a run, two hits and five walks while striking out five.

Virginia left 10 runners on base. Daniel Pinero (So., Toronto, Ontario) had a pair of hits and scored two of UVa’s three runs, while Thaiss knocked in two runs with a double.

NC State scored three runs – all with two outs – in the first inning, getting an RBI double from Andrew Knizner and a two-run double from Joe Dunand.

Virginia knocked Wilder from the game in the fifth inning when Adam Haseley (Fr., Windermere, Fla.) drew a four-pitch, leadoff walk. Reliever Curt Britt hit Pinero with a pitch, then gave up a two-run double to center from Thaiss. A wild pitch allowed Thaiss to reach third but UVa could not get him home. The Cavaliers again put a runner at third in the sixth inning as Kevin Doherty (Jr., Laytonsville, Md.) tripled with one out, but UVa was unable to push across the run.

Virginia capitalized on a leadoff Pinero double in the seventh inning to knot the score 3-3. Reliever Will Gilbert entered the game, but fired errantly in a pickoff attempt at second base, allowing Pinero to move to third. One out later, Kenny Towns (Sr., Burke, Va.) singled to left to tie the game.

Game 2:
Joe Dunand hit a two-run walk-off home run in the 10th inning as NC State picked up a 5-3 win over the Cavaliers in the second game.

Virginia reliever Alec Bettinger (So., Woodbridge, Va.) pitched the final two innings and took the loss, falling to 3-2 on the season. In his first start of 2015, Josh Sborz (Jr., McLean, Va.) shifted from the closer role and worked six strong innings, giving up two runs, five hits and four walks while striking out a pair.

NC State reliever Tommy DeJuneas (2-2) fired four shutout innings to earn the win. NC State starter Johnny Piedmonte pitched four-plus innings, allowing a run, three hits and a walk.

NC State took a 2-0 lead in the third inning. After a leadoff walk to Logan Ratledge in the third inning, Sborz gave up a two-run home run to right field to Preston Palmeiro.

The Cavaliers scored all their runs during the fifth inning. Coman hit a leadoff double, prompting NC State to bring Joe O’Donnell into the game in relief. Joe McCarthy (Jr., Scranton, Pa.) singled into right to move Coman to third, and a wild pitch allowed Coman to score and McCarthy to move to second. Christian Lowry (Fr., Chesapeake, Va.) grounded to second to advance McCarthy to score, and Ernie Clement (Fr., Rochester, N.Y.) followed with a single to center to tie the game, 2-2. UVa then loaded the bases and scored when Thaiss grounded out to second base to bring Clement home.

NC State tied the game in the eighth when pinch hitter Jake Armstrong drew a walk with the bases loaded and two outs from Bettinger, who had come into the game in relief of David Rosenberger (Jr., Bethlehem, Pa.) with runners on second and third and one out. Ratledge followed with a blooper into center, but Haseley made a terrific diving catch to leave the bases juiced.

The Wolfpack won the game in the 10th inning as Ryne Willard hit a leadoff single before Dunand launched a two-run blast over the left-field wall for his fifth home run of the season.

Virginia heads to Norfolk, Va., Tuesday to face Old Dominion at Harbor Park in a 7 p.m. game.

WAR ROOM-- 4.24.15

The WAR ROOM is back and this edition is full of hoops recruiting scoop! With the coaches allowed back on the road this weekend for the second evaluation session of the month, the Cavaliers will no doubt have staff members spread out watching a host of top targets. We'll tell you which coaches will be where and break down a few of the newer names we've heard of guys UVa will be taking note of this weekend. But first, we'll give you the latest on everything we're hearing on a top 2015 target that the Wahoos are making a strong push to land. We'll tell you about his recent visits, his upcoming plans, and where things stand.

As always, what's said in the War Room, stays in the War Room. Let's go!

Breaking down Williams' recruitment

As the week has gone on, there's been one player on the minds of most UVa fans and that's four-star Rivals150 guard Kenny Williams. And there's plenty to talk about as far as his recruitment is concerned.

Let's start here: According to various sources, his official visit to Carolina Sunday into Monday went well, perhaps even very well. But one thing to keep in mind with the Richmond native is that he and his family have earned a reputation for being very hard to read. In fact, sources close to each school involved feel the same way. There's no doubt in our mind that the Heels really did some heavy lifting in their pursuit of the standout shooter.

But UVa also made a very big impression during the five hours or so he spent on Grounds the following day. He and his father got a chance to see and learn a lot in the time he was in Charlottesville, as Tony Bennett and the Wahoos broke down how he would be used, how he would fit with the current players, how he compared to former shooters that Bennett has coached, and their case was clear: You can do something we absolutely need.

Sources say the staff felt really good about the visit but because of the reality of his poker face, they wouldn't be shocked if UVa is the choice but also wouldn't be surprised if they were third or fourth on his pecking order. In talking to sources throughout the week, the expectation was that Williams and his family would spend some time this weekend deciding on his final official visits. He has three he can take and sources seem somewhat confident that Florida and Michigan are locks to get those visits if he wants to take them.

And then it gets a little tricky because: 1) where does he go for the third official visit? and 2) does he even need to take any more trips?

As one source pointed out late Thursday night, the plan when he committed to VCU the first time was to evaluate what visits would come next, so there's precedence here for a decision without more officials. We think that it's unlikely but it wouldn't surprise us.

So, if he does take visits, where else might he go? Word we've heard is that both Georgetown and UVa are in serious consideration for that trip. Which seems a little curious, right? Why take the official to a school you just took an unofficial to? The answer might be as simple as this: He wasn't able to spend a lot of time with the players during his time in town on Tuesday. And the only real way to do that is to come in for an official. We'll see how much weight that carries moving forward.

Now, outside of all of that, sources in Richmond and throughout the Commonwealth seem somewhat on the same page here. The Wolverines appear to be a fading dark horse, with UNC and UVa in the top spot, though we'd give the slight edge to the Tar Heels at this point if we had to bet on it. Thankfully, we don't.

In a recruitment like this where not many of the primary folks involved are talking or giving many vibes, the noise can be hard to cut through because you're not sure if the same wrong source is telling everybody the wrong info. Maybe "wrong" isn't totally correct; there's just a lot of guessing going on. But suffice to say we've heard some good things about UVa's position.

At this point, we're not willing to give you any sort of prediction other than to say we think he'll take more visits. How big of a factor distance plays, though, will obviously determine how this all works out. If somehow UVa does get that official visit, we really like its chances.

For now, we'll have to wait (again) and see how it play out.

Second evaluation weekend

Going along with everything surrounding Williams' recruitment is the fact that this is the second of the two weekends college coaches can be out on the road this month. And everything appears to be centered on Lexington, Louisville, and Indianapolis.

UVa will obviously have coaches out in each location with Bennett bouncing from site to site as he usually does. Jason Williford will be stationed in Lexington for the second session of Nike's EYBL, Ron Sanchez will be in Louisville for the Under Armour event, and new assistant coach Brad Soderberg will be watching the Adidas Gauntlet series in Indy.

As it was the first time around, the main goal for UVa during this period is to watch the targets the staff has already identified. But there are a few "new" names that we hear the Cavaliers will be focusing on.

For starters, there's 2017 forward Michael Porter. UVa commit Kyle Guy has done an impressive job of working his good friend and the Cavaliers might be in a position to carve out some room for the five-star prospect who plays for Mokan Elite on the EYBL.

The Cavaliers will also be playing close attention to several others on that circuit, including a new name for the board: Dylan Painter with Team Final. Though he doesn't have an offer yet, he's a guy in 2016 in the post that the Cavaliers want to see more of. Another guy they will be following closely is a 2017 guard, Aaron Thompson of Paul VI. The 2017 standout, who runs with Team Takeover, will be easy to keep track of given the other UVa targets on that squad.

The one "new" name we've heard that the Wahoos might be most excited about is Jonathan Isaac, a 6-foot-9 guy who can play the 3. Yes, you read that correctly. Apparently, the Florida native grew like six inches in a summer, meaning he went from being a guard to being a big but was able to retain all of his ball skills. Problem of course is that everyone is one the four-star standout. Look for UVa to try to be among them.

And lastly, one other target we expect the Cavaliers to watch is New Hampton big man Eddie Ekiyor. He's a guy the staff has continued to follow but he's expected to get another long look this weekend.

That is it for this week, and as always, what's said here, stays here!

Baseball: UVa beats NCSU 8-3

From UVa:

Virginia Defeats NC State in Series Opener, 8-3
Jones strikes out 11 over seven strong innings

Behind seven strong innings from starting pitcher Connor Jones (So., Chesapeake, Va.), the Virginia baseball team knocked off NC State, 8-3, Friday evening at Doak Field at Dail Park in the first of a three-game series at Dail Park in Raleigh, N.C. Virginia (27-15, 10-12 ACC) scored five of its runs with two outs and now has won six of its last seven games.

“Connor Jones was terrific again tonight,” Virginia head coach Brian O’Connor said. “He came out and was in charge on the mound once again. His command has really improved. He pitched like a No. 1 (starter) last week and he did it again tonight.”

Jones (5-2) allowed three earned runs, five hits and three walks as he earned the win. Jones matched a career high with 11 strikeouts. It marked Jones’ second straight double-figure strikeout performance as he also fanned 11 last Saturday in UVa’s 5-2 win over Miami. Alec Bettinger (So., Woodbridge, Va.) struck out four over the final two innings to finish off the win.

NC State starter Brian Brown (3-3) worked five innings and pitched to the first two batters in the sixth inning. He allowed three runs (one earned), five hits and three walks while striking out five in taking the loss for the Wolfpack (21-18, 9-12).

Matt Thaiss (So., Jackson, N.J.) went 3-for-5 and drove in four runs for Virginia. Thaiss now has eight RBI in three games this week. Pavin Smith (Fr., Jupiter, Fla.) also racked up three hits and Daniel Pinero (So., Toronto, Ontario) as the Cavaliers finished with a dozen hits. Scoring opportunities were aplenty as both teams had runners on base in every inning.

Virginia took advantage of an NC State miscue to score the game’s first run in the fifth inning. With one out Adam Haseley (Fr., Windermere, Fla.) hit a grounder to shortstop Joel McKeithan, whose throw to first pulled Preston Palmeiro off the bag. Haseley moved to second on a wild pitch and after Daniel Pinero walked, Brown threw another wild pitch to advance the runners. Thaiss then hit a slow grounder to second base to bring Haseley home.

The Cavaliers sent 11 batters to the plate in a five-run sixth inning, but UVa got three straight two-out, run-scoring hits to extend its lead. Smith slapped a double to left to open the inning and Robbie Coman bunted his way on, spelling the end of the night for Brown. Facing Travis Orwig, Joe McCarthy (Jr., Scranton, Pa.) hit a hard grounder to second baseman Logan Ratledge, who booted it with Smith scoring on the potential double-play ball. Kevin Doherty (Jr., Laytonsville, Md.) bunted the runners to second and third.

One out later, the Cavaliers clutched up to stretch their lead. Haseley flipped a single into left field to plate McCarthy. Pinero then singled through the infield and into left field to bring in Justin Novak (Fr., Tokyo, Japan). Thaiss then tattooed a pitch over the head of center fielder Jake Fincher, scoring Haseley and Pinero to push the lead to 6-0.

NC State cut the Cavaliers’ lead in half in the seventh inning when Palmeiro launched a three-run home run that caromed off the top of the center-field wall and out of the park. Prior to the homer, Jones had walked Fincher and plunked Ratledge with the next pitch. Palmeiro then homered on the following offering.

Virginia answered with a run in the eighth inning on a Coman fielder’s choice grounder which brought Thaiss home. The Cavaliers added a run in the ninth on a two-out Thaiss RBI single, scoring Novak.

Game 2 of the series is set for 6:30 p.m. Saturday, while the series finale is slated for 1 p.m. Sunday.

Who is this Thorpe kid, and where did he come from???

I have been out of the country for a bit and haven't been attuned to spring football. All of a sudden this Thorpe guy shows up and looks pretty good in the spring game highlights.

I didn't recall his name as a recruit, and searched every class - nada. He is not listed in the roster. With the new board, the search function only goes back to the inception of the new format - like 2 days ago, so I can't figure out where we got him.

Is he a transfer? Could someone please provide the backstory on what looks to be a real talent? Thanks.

For those who hate the NBA...

do me a favor and just watch the Atlanta Hawks play one game, and see if it changes your opinion even a little bit.

The Hawks aren't my favorite team but I LOVE to watch them play. They don't have superstars with their own shoe lines, but these guys play the game the way it's supposed to be played...helps that UVa's own Mike Scott is a key contributor.

The network executives would hate it, but if there's a God in heaven, the NBA finals will be Atlanta & San Antonio. Great basketball with 2 great teams.

Video: Hamm has noticed a change for the RBs

After receiving a medical hardship waiver in 2013, rising sophomore running back Daniel Hamm shook off the injury bug last season and played in 10 of UVa's 12 games. But the 5-foot-10, 190-pound back figures to be a much bigger part of the gameplan this fall.

In this video interview, the Wytheville native talks about his impressions of spring practice, how he's grown as a running back, how new RBs coach Chris Beatty has impacted things, how running track helped him play faster, how different things are this spring with such an emphasis on staying square, and how he's adjusting to having a bigger workload for an offense that is looking to establish an identity on the ground.

CavsCorner Video: Ross Burbank

One of four UVa players chosen as captains for the 2015 season, senior offensive lineman Ross Burbank says the Cavaliers are in a much better position coming out of spring ball than they were going in last month.

In this video interview, he talks about the line and its improvement, about new OL coach Dave Borbely, about the changes from a schematic standpoint, about the program's emphasis on forging an identity with its running game, and also about finding out at halftime of the Spring Game that he had been chosen as a team captain.
