Message board updates coming (Updated)

Some of you may have seen the post this past week asking me about changes to the Main Board (if you don't frequent that board, be careful because it gets pretty wild pretty fast) and if those changes would be coming to CavsCorner.

Now that the new boards have been out in the wild for several days and our IT folks feel confident about the data they're seeing, I can tell you that CC will get the new boards late Monday night/early Tuesday morning.

So, what's different? Well, before we get to that let me be totally honest with you and say that the current board framework from an engineering standpoint is ancient. It's why we have those hiccups during games where the third or fourth page of posts won't load. The mothership went into making these changes so that issues like that will be a thing of the past. The new boards will be more secure and more stable.

What else will be different?

1. The new boards are smoother in addition to being responsive, i.e. formatted for whatever device (laptop, phone, tablet) you're on. The days of having a different site for mobile (and giving up things like quoting in replies) will be over. For my money, if that was the only change Rivals was making it would be worth it. It's going to fundamentally improve how well I can do my job.
2. There will be no limit on thread history.
3. There will be private messaging.
4. More dynamic embedding of media such as photos, videos, tweets, etc.
5. You will be able to set up alerts so that you can follow certain threads/users and the board will remember which threads you've viewed and where you left them.
6. The quoting aspect will be tweaked so that you're able to quote more easily; you'll be able to highlight a part of a post and reply directly to that quote. You'll even be able to quote multiple posts in your response.
7. The navigation and search functions will be much improved, meaning you can quickly jump to the first unread post in a thread or to the top and bottom of each thread. Advanced search features will include searches by keyword, date, or thread title.

Just as with the launch on the Main Board that's linked above, there will be "Help" resources pinned to the top of our board that will give you steps to get you up to speed on avatars, signatures, and pretty much anything else you can think of.

Now, I know change isn't easy. And for some of you, this might be hard to stomach at first. We get used to what we're used to and we like that comfort. All I can tell you is that in working with the boards the past couple of months, the new stuff is so, so much better than what we have now. And for those who don't really want all the bells and whistles, there will be a lot more customization available to you with the new boards than with our current iteration.

All I'll ask is that folks give it a chance and try to voice concerns directly to me/Rivals rather than fill the board with discussion of the board changes. I'm hopeful that the help topics will handle a lot of questions but I'll do my best to make sure I answer questions as quickly as possible.

As always, thanks for your support of the site and my email (which is in my signature for this very reason) is always open.

Baseball: Hoos blast Longwood 14-6

From UVa:

Virginia Defeats Longwood, 14-6
Thaiss records career-high four hits and four RBI in win

The Virginia baseball team rolled to a 14-6 victory over Longwood Tuesday evening at Davenport Field. The Cavaliers (25-15) matched a season high for runs and finished with 16 hits in the resounding victory. Matt Thaiss (So., Jackson, N.J.) homered and drove in four runs as part of a career-high four-hit performance.

“That was a heck of a win for us,” Virginia head coach Brian O’Connor said. “Coming off the difficult loss to Miami on Sunday where we had the chance to sweep the series and didn’t do it, I thought we were tremendous offensively. They ran a bunch of different pitchers out there and I thought collectively as a group we swung the bat very well. That was great to see.”

Thaiss homered and added an opposite-field double that hit off the top of the left-center field wall as part of his big day. Adam Haseley (Fr., Windermere, Fla.) scored three runs and recorded two hits, while Robbie Coman (Jr., Lake Worth, Fla.) was 2-for-4 with three RBI and Pavin Smith (Fr., Jupiter, Fla.) added a pair of hits and two RBI.

Virginia starting pitcher Derek Casey (Fr., Mechanicsville, Va.) worked 2 2/3 innings before exiting the game with an injury. Already on a pitch count for the game, Casey (4-1) earned the win after allowing one run (unearned), two hits and three walks while striking out four. David Rosenberger (Jr., Bethlahem, Pa.) pitched 3 1/3 innings of relief before giving way to Jack Roberts (So., Richmond, Va.), who worked the final three innings to earn his first career save.

Longwood starter Michael Catlin (3-2) allowed six earned runs and five hits in taking the loss. He pitched to one batter in the second inning before being removed from the game. The Lancers (17-22) used six pitchers in the contest.

Longwood struck for the game’s first run in the opening inning as Connar Bastaich scored on a two-out fielding error by second baseman Jack Gerstenmaier (Fr., Richmond, Va.).

UVa countered by batting around and scoring five runs in the bottom of the first. UVa needed just three batters to tie the game as Haseley drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on an error and scored on a Thaiss single. After Kenny Towns (Sr., Burke, Va.) singled and Joe McCarthy (Jr., Scranton, Pa.) walked to load the bases, Coman cranked a bases-clearing double to the left-field gap. Smith then singled to center to score Coman and up the lead to 5-1.

The Cavaliers added a run in the second inning when Towns grounded out, bringing Haseley home from third.

Virginia sent 10 batters to the plate in a five-run fourth inning to blow the game open and take an 11-1 lead. The first three batters reached, capped by a Thaiss’ monster three-run homer to right field, a shot that landed on the track next door. It was his team-leading eighth home run of the season. Smith added an RBI single later in the inning, and a wild pitch brought Coman home.

UVa added a run in the fifth on a Towns sac fly before Longwood put up three runs in the sixth on a two-run homer from Kyri Washington and an RBI grounder from Michael Osinski.

Virginia posted its final two runs in the sixth on an RBI single from Thomas Woodruff (Sr., Clifton, Va.) and a sacrifice fly from Novak. The Lancers got a two-run homer from pinch hitter Tyler Barry in the ninth inning to close the scoring.

Virginia plays host Liberty at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Davenport Field. A live video broadcast is available through a Cavaliers Live subscription on VirginiaSports.com. A link to live statistics (GameTracker) also can be found on VirginiaSports.com. WINA 1070-AM and WINA.com will carry the live local radio broadcast.

Adams' recruitment is starting to blow up

A few weeks ago, UVa became the first school to offer Riverbend offensive lineman Zach Adams. Since that time, he's had a standout showing at Rivals Camp and has added offers from Air Force, Maryland, and today Illinois. In the article linked below Adams, who was in Charlottesville on Saturday for the Spring Game, talks about the other schools that are planning to come see him. This is one to keep an eye on...

Soderberg to join Bennett's staff at UVa (Now official)

I have been hearing a couple of names the past few days in relation to UVa's search for an assistant coach to fill the vacancy Ritchie McKay left when he went back to Liberty.

According to several reports tonight, including Earl Austin, Jr. out of St. Louis, Lindenwood University head coach Brad Soderberg is set to join Tony Bennett's staff in Charlottesville. I haven't been able to confirm it yet but his was one of the handful of names I believed were seriously involved. Soderberg, a Wisconsin native who was an assistant for Dick Bennett at UW, is a long-time friend and colleague of Tony's. Feels like a great fit IMO.

When we get something official, we'll pass it along.

Edit: Added the full release from UVa making the hiring official.

UVa football to play series with IU, cancel with Stanford

From UVa:

Virginia Announces Two-Game Series with Indiana
Hoosiers replace Stanford on 2017 and 2018 Schedules

The Virginia football program announced today a two-game series with Indiana University for the 2017 and 2018 seasons. Indiana replaces Stanford on the Cavaliers' schedule those seasons. A scheduling conflict led to the cancellation of the games between the Cardinal and UVa.

Virginia will host Indiana on Sept. 9, 2017 and travel to Bloomington on Sept. 8, 2018.

The schools most recently played during the 2009 and 2011 seasons. The Cavaliers won in Charlottesville, 47-7 in 2009 and prevailed in Bloomington, 34-31 in 2011.

Spring Game thread...

Greetings from Scott Stadium, where the fans and kids are on the field here ahead of the Spring Game, which starts at 6 p.m. Per UVa, we'll have two 15-minute quarters in the first half (with a two-minute break in between). We'll then have a 12-minute halftime followed by 12-minute third and fourth quarters with a running clock. The last two minutes of the fourth will be a two-minute drill.

Orange will be your offense and Blue your defense here today. QBs and STs will be in white.

According to UVa, the players who will not participate today due to injury/surgery include: Doni Dowling, Mike Moore, Darious Latimore, Grant Polk, Caanan Brown, Tucker Gamble, Micah Kiser, Donte Wilkins, Jack McDonald, Eric Tetlow, Sadiq Olanrewaju, and Jay Whitmire.

I'll be back with more updates shortly.

OOC schedule

For those wondering why we kept London this year, look at the preseason projections. Our OOC has 3 top 25 teams. This would not have been the year to break in a new coach. Thankfully it looks like somebody is getting smarter and we'll start scheduling wins until we are winning 8-9 games consistently.

Baseball: UVa drops Game 3 to Canes, still wins series 2-1

From UVa:

No. 9 Miami Defeats Virginia, 8-6, in Series Finale

Cavaliers take two of three games in the series

The Virginia baseball team fell 8-6 to No. 9 Miami Sunday at Davenport Field as the Hurricanes (30-11, 15-6 ACC) salvaged the final game of the series. Virginia (24-15, 9-12) took two of three games in the series as it won its sixth straight series against Miami.

Despite an early start time of 10 a.m. because of incoming weather, an energetic crowd of 3,747 showed up for the morning contest.

"Certainly we are disappointed that we had a chance to sweep a series against a really talented ballclub and we didn't do it," Virginia head coach Brian O'Connor said. "That doesn't take away from how good of baseball that I think we're playing. I think we played some of our best baseball this weekend. I'm proud of our guys for hanging in there. We had some scoring opportunities and had the big five-run second inning, but we just couldn't put enough more runs on the board."

Robbie Coman (Jr., Lake Worth, Fla.), Jack Gerstenmaier (Fr., Richmond, Va.) and Daniel Pinero (So., Toronto, Ontario) each recorded two hits for Virginia, which finished with 10 hits. Coman also scored twice as he completed a big weekend by going 7-for-12 at the plate. Miami's Willie Abreu had the tiebreaking three-run double in the fourth inning and also finished the series with seven hits.

Virginia starting pitcher Brandon Waddell (Jr., Houston, Texas) worked 3 2/3 innings, giving up eight runs (seven earned), seven hits and five walks while fanning four. He took the loss and dropped to 2-4. Miami reliever Sam Abrams (1-0) earned the win after getting the final out in the fifth inning, while Bryan Garcia notched his ninth save after working a perfect ninth inning. UM starter Enrique Sosa pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing five runs (four earned), nine hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

Miami took advantage of a Virginia error in scoring three runs in the first inning. After Ricky Eusebio hit a leadoff single, Garrett Kennedy hit a tailor-made double-play ball that went through the legs of Pinero at shortstop for an error. Waddell walked back-to-back batters, George Iskenderian and Zack Collins, to force in a run, and David Thompson followed with a two-run single to right-center as Miami grabbed a 3-0 lead before an out was recorded.

The Hurricanes tacked on a run in the second inning when Iskenderian lined a two-out triple to right-center, scoring Kennedy.

Virginia mounted a comeback in its half of the second, batting around while scoring five runs. UVa started the inning with four straight singles, capped by a two-run single to center from Gerstenmaier. After an Adam Haseley (Fr., Windermere, Fla.) sacrifice bunt, Pinero grounded a single into left field to score Charlie Cody (Fr., Chesapeake, Va.) and Gerstenmaier and tie the game. Pinero went to second on the throw to the plate and moved to third when the throw sailed to the backstop. Pavin Smith (Fr., Jupiter, Fla.) hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring Pinero home.

Miami tied the game in the third inning. Thompson drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a Brandon Lopez groundout and scored on a two-out single from Christopher Barr.

The Hurricanes got another big two-out hit in the fourth inning when Abreu doubled off the left-field wall, clearing the bases and giving Miami the lead for good, 8-5.

While both teams' starters were roughed up, the bullpens each were solid. UVa's relievers worked 5 1/3 scoreless innings, while Miami's staff allowed just an unearned run over the final 4 1/3 frames. Tommy Doyle (Fr., Vienna, Va.) and Kevin Doherty (Jr., Laytonsville, Md.) each pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings for the Cavaliers, while Alec Bettinger (So., Woodbridge, Va.) got the final two outs in the ninth inning.

UVa scored its final run in the seventh inning. On a potential double-play ball, Iskendarian took the throw at second base and then errantly fired to first, allowing Coman to score from third.

Virginia has a busy week ahead. The Cavaliers play host to Longwood at 6 p.m. Tuesday and Liberty at 6 p.m. Wednesday before heading to NC State Friday through Sunday for a three-game ACC series.

WAR ROOM-- 4.17.15

The WAR ROOM is back and this edition is full of football and hoops recruiting scoop! With Rivals Camp now in the rearview mirror, we'll look at several of the prospects in attendance and break down not only how they performed but also how things might be shaping up in their respective recruitments. And of course, with the Spring Game set for tomorrow night, we'll look at the visitors UVa is expecting to host as the spring concludes in Charlottesville. And on the hardwood, there's one recruit everyone seems to be talking about and we'll give you the latest on what we're hearing on his recruitment as well as where UVa stands. Can the Cavaliers make a move and lock up one the top players in the Commonwealth in the class of 2015?

As always, what's said in the War Room, stays in the War Room. Let's go!

Visitors expected for the Spring Game

With the Cavaliers set to take the field on Saturday night for the Spring Game, there will obviously be visitors in town to see things up close and personal. While a lot of the 2015 signees will be in town for orientation, the focus is obviously on the younger guys.

UVa is expecting recent three-star running back commit Alex Faniel in town (more on him in a bit).

The one name we're most intrigued by might be that of Riverbend offensive lineman Zach Adams. In talking to him thus far, there's little doubt that he's very interested in the Cavaliers and the fact that they were the first to offer will be big for him no matter what offers he gets. Because he grew up between Texas and Virginia, UT would be big too and truth be told, it's a school that we'd expect him to commit to on the spot if offered. As it stands, though, we're not sure that's likely. What is likely is that he'll remain uncommitted through the camp circuit to see what schools come through with offers. Sources say UVa feels really confident about this one and given the need for tackles in this class, getting Adams would be big. He showed at Rivals Camp last weekend just how much potential he has, so getting him back on Grounds (along with a host of committed recruits to make him feel welcomed) is clearly a great move.

The other two names are visitors that we frankly have to say UVa is a longshot for right now. But getting four-star Indian River linebacker Devon Hunter Brown, the five-star 2017 safety, is pretty huge. Yulee was the MVP at his position last weekend and even though he's not currently as highly rated as some of the commits Alabama gets, word we've heard is that the Tide have a big lead. Hunter is a lot more wide open but folks we trust don't expect him to stay local. Again, though, having them in town is a big plus. While we don't see the Wahoos being serious contenders right now, that can certainly change.

Thoughts coming out of RCS Richmond

After seeing so much talent last weekend at camp, we wanted to take a minute to sort of zero in on not just what was done on the field but also where things are trending in terms of UVa's position.

Four-star OL Josh Ball appeared to be the biggest lineman at camp and he really showed himself to be more than just a big body. The thing that really stood out the most about him, though, was the fact that whether it was drill work or 1-on-1s, he was always focused and always teachable. He's a very humble guy but he plays with an aggressiveness that all linemen need. In terms of his recruitment, the offer from FSU might be a game changer but otherwise, this was looking like one that would like come down to WVU, Penn State, Clemson, Virginia Tech, and UVa. The two in-state schools still have a great shot but this one will absolutely be a marathon and not a sprint.

We were a little surprised to see four-star DE Kyree Campbell say that he would be releasing a Top 10 soon with UVa definitely in it. Now, it's not so much a shock that the Cavaliers are among the 10 but it's surprising that they're one of three he felt comfortable announcing early. This is a recruitment that seemed to be trending away from Virginia a little bit, so this is obviously big news. We'll see how much traction Mike London and his staff can get now that Campbell is focusing on a smaller number of options.

UVa commit Joseph Reed might have been the one guy who impressed the most given what we expected. It's not that Reed wasn't thought of as a quality recruit but his physicality at the position matched with his hands and speed were clearly better than many anticipated. At times, he looked like a four-star type of guys. He's a multi-sport athlete and his versatility is very clear. With Blackman also in this class, the Cavaliers have two big-time wideouts already in the fold. And if it wasn't for prom, he'd be in Charlottesville tomorrow along with the other committed players. Do not be shocked if new schools offer Reed but sources have made clear that he's 100-percent solid in his commitment.

Lastly, it's clear that in 2017 and 2018, UVa will have quarterback targets to go after with a vengeance. As we said at the time we thought that Faniel, the Glen Allen signal caller, was the best of the group. And his familiarity with the Cavaliers is worth pointing out again. Many we've talked to in the last week feel like the Wahoos were already in the driver's seat here even before his transfer and pending connection on the field with Blackman. London and Marques Hagans have made Faniel feel like a part of the family even while his former lead recruiter, Tom O'Brien, was retiring. Though he's a long way from making his college decision, we'd have to call UVa the clear front runner and it's probably not even close.

Also in that class is Woodberry Forest's Lindell Stone. He's been a guy that Steve Fairchild has made a connection with and he's been on Grounds a host of times at this point. His recruitment isn't as clear yet as Faniel's but from the way things seem to be trending, we think UVa would likely favor Faniel just slightly. In recruiting, a lot can happen of course but we don't think the Hoos will look to take two QBs in this class.

One of the big reasons for that is that in the following year, there's Ocean Lakes standout Tyler DeSue. And he was very impressive on Saturday in Richmond. Sources we've talked to have pointed to UVa being the favorite here since last year. There's so much time, though, between now and when he'll make his decision that it's hard to really gauge. But we will say this: UVa's recruiting at the QB position, after adding Nick Johns in 2015 and Abramson this year, is probably as solid as it's been in a long, long time.

The latest on Kenny Williams

As we transition to the hardwood, the name that everyone seems to be talking and asking about is that of four-star Rivals150 guard Kenny Williams. And make no mistake: UVa is making a run at him.

According to various sources, Tony Bennett isn't alone in going after the Richmond native and former VCU signee. The Rams are still in the hunt, as are Florida, Georgetown, Louisville, Michigan, North Carolina, and Texas. In talking to folks we trust, the thinking seems to be that three options seem like the most likely: Staying home, staying with Shaka Smart, or heading to UM or UNC (not necessarily in that order).

Now, that's not to say Carolina or any of the other schools listed aren't serious contenders. But now that he's going through the process again, those seem like the most likely scenarios at the moment. He's looking to take visits soon and word is UVa is trying to lock him up for a trip to Charlottesville. Next weekend would seem to be problematic since it's the second of the two open evaluation weekends when coaches can be on the road. Bennett has shown in the past that he'll stay home and recruit if need be but we expect that if the visit happens soon it'll likely happen during the week.

Now, in terms of the forecast on this one, things are a little murky. Sources we've talked to feel confident that UVa, UNC, and Michigan are in the thick of it and that distance isn't likely to be as big of a factor as some might expect. If that's the case, then, Texas makes sense, right? Well, we've gotten conflicting info on that front. Some have said UT isn't really in the hunt while others seem convinced it'll happen. For now, we believe the Horns are a team that's being seriously considered.

It's important to note that UVa really never stopped recruiting the 6-foot-2 shooter. Even though Bennett didn't have a spot for him, they kept in contact. And the fact that Virginia didn't play games seems to be something that really stood out to Williams and his family.

For now, we'll have to wait and see how the visits play out. We don't get the sense that the timeframe will be rushed but we also don't think they'll take all the time in the world. As was clear when he chose VCU the first time, Williams isn't afraid to pull the trigger once he's ready.

That is it for this week, and as always, what's said here, stays here!

Spring Game

Not a bad crowd yesterday, Daily Progress said there were 6000, I would say that is about right. Thorpe is the real deal and will make some big plays this season. Running game looked better, both Hamm and Smoke looked good, they were running downhill. Hard to say whether the OL is better at run blocking because there were some starters out on the DL. I liked seeing the QBs up under center and using the FB more. I got a hunch that ML still wants to have a physical run game and I am not sure that can happen. No shock but Blanding was hands down the best on D, he is fun to watch. My biggest worry would have to be the LBs I think they have a ways to go. I still feel like Lambert seems to lock on his target, had a OK first half.

I am slightly optimistic, 5 to 6 wins? However, after being at the UCLA game last year I thought a winning season was doable.

Baseball: Hoos take Game 2 over No. 9-ranked Canes

From UVa:

Virginia Defeats No. 9 Miami, 5-2, to Clinch Series
Jones fires 7 2/3 innings and strikes out career-high 11 batters in UVa win

The Virginia baseball team rallied for four runs in the eighth inning to down No. 9 Miami, 5-2, Saturday afternoon in front of 4,228 spectators at Davenport Field. The Cavaliers (24-14, 9-11 ACC) have captured the first two games with the Hurricanes (29-11, 14-6) to clinch the series win and go for the series sweep at 10 a.m. Sunday. The game time has been moved from the original 1 p.m. start time because of incoming inclement weather.

Virginia picked up its sixth straight series win against Miami and won Saturday after getting to Miami closer Bryan Garcia for four runs in the eighth inning. Adam Haseley (Fr., Windermere, Fla.) hit the tie-breaking, two-run single to give UVa the lead for good.

"Last night was a great team victory and certainly today's was as well," Virginia head coach Brian O'Connor said. "I thought our guys really battled (Miami starter) Andrew Suarez and hung in there, and Connor Jones had his best outing of the year as a starter for us. His stuff was really good and it was in the strike zone. He was tremendous today and pounded the strike zone with all of his pitches. We really needed that from him. It was just a great team victory."

Jones matched a career high by working 7 2/3 innings and struck out a career-best 11 batters. He allowed two runs (one earned), six hits and two walks in his best start in a Virginia uniform. Kevin Doherty (Jr., Laytonsville, Va.) picked up the win after getting the final out of the eighth inning. Josh Sborz (Jr., McLean, Va.) retired the side in order in the ninth to gain his 11th save.

Garcia (4-2) did not retire a batter and allowed all four UVa runs in the eighth inning as he took the loss. UM starter Andrew Suarez allowed an unearned run, five hits and three walks while striking out five in 5 2/3 innings. Willie Abreu went 4-for-4, accounting for more than half of the Hurricanes' seven hits.

After the first six Cavaliers were retired in order, Virginia had traffic on the basepaths in each of their final six trips to the plate. Robbie Coman (Jr., Lake Worth, Fla.) and Charlie Cody (Fr., Chesapeake, Va.) each recorded three hits, as both matched career highs. Cody also had key outfield assist at the plate to end the top of the eighth inning and keep UVa within a run.

Virginia scored a run in the third inning when Haseley grounded into a double play with the bases loaded and none out, bringing Matt Thaiss (So., Jackson, N.J.) home. The Hurricanes knotted the score in the fifth inning on an RBI grounder from Carl Chester, then moved ahead in the sixth inning on a two-out RBI single to center from Abreu.

Miami had an opportunity to extend its lead in the eighth inning. After Zack Collins and David Thompson hit back-to-back two-out singles, Virginia brought Doherty in to face Abreu, who slapped a single to left field, but Cody came up firing and nailed Collins at the plate to keep the deficit at one run.

UVa left a pair of runners on base in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and left the bases loaded in the seventh, but the Cavaliers pushed across four runs in the eighth while sending 10 batters to the plate against four Miami pitchers. Suarez faced five batters, and each of them reached base. Coman led off with a double and Thaiss walked. Cody then laid down a bunt which rolled down the third-base line and came to a stop just inside the line for a single to load the bases.

Jack Gerstenmaier (Fr., Richmond, Va.) was hit by a pitch to force in a run, and Haseley followed by lining a single to center to score pinch runner Thomas Woodruff (Sr., Clifton, Va.) and Cody to give UVa a 4-2 lead. After Daniel Pinero (So., Toronto, Ontario) bunted the runners over against reliever Daniel Briggi, Pavin Smith (Fr., Jupiter, Fla.) grounded out to bring home pinch runner Justin Novak (Fr., Tokyo, Japan).
