OT, Commanders sign Zaccheas…

Not just saying this because he’s a Hoo, but absolutely love what the Commanders have done over the last few weeks. After 25+ years it feels like we finally have ownership and a front office that knows what they’re doing.

Ton of free agent signings, that will probably result in 8-10 starters, not even including special teams, where upgrades were made as well. All reasonable contracts, and still have a mountain of cap space.

Next step is the draft where we have 6 picks in the top 100, and another probably 4-5 starters. The #2 pick will be a QB…likely Daniels or Maye. Other early picks need to focus on OT & DB.

Culture of a severely damaged organization won’t get fixed overnight, but I do have hope for the first time since the night RG3 got injured that we might actually contend in my lifetime again.

Public School NIL Rankings

Interesting list. Doesn’t include private schools but nice to see we are ahead of plenty of SEC and B1G schools and 2nd in the ACC.

It would also be interesting to see where we’d fall in a football and basketball only ranking. I imagine we are probably not as concentrated as mamy other schools. Pretty sure we are near (or at?) the top in NIL for multiple non-revs

Virginia wins "All hands on the mound" duel with ODU 4-0

Both teams went deep into the bullpen. After six innings neither team had scored on a total of five hits. Virginia finally broke through in the 7th inning when after two outs, Anderson was hit by a pitch and came home on a single by Hanson. The Cavs added three insurance runs in the 8th. Ferrence and Saucke led off the inning with solid singles. After a sacrifice bunt by Didawick, they both scored on a triple by Ford into right field. Ford then scored on a single by Godbout to reach the final score.
Savino, Barker, Woolfolk, Osinski, Kampschror, Augustin, Coady, and Teel pitched for Virginia. Only Coady, who was the winning pitcher, went as long as two innings. He struck out all six batters that he faced.
Ford, Goutbout, and Hanson each had two of Virginia's eight hits.

Blanco and Hungate combine to lead Virginia to 7 - 3 win over Duke

Virginia scored 4 runs in the 2nd inning, 1 run in the 3rd, and 2 runs in the 4th to jump out to a 7 - 1 lead. Noons got the last two Cavs out in the 5th and did not allow a hit for the rest of the game. Blanco started on the mound for Virginia and pitched the first 4.2 innings. He was charged with 7 hits and all 3 runs, 2 of which scored after the home plate umpire missed what my old eyes believed to be strike 3 on a Duke batter, Hungate pitched the last 4.1 innings and allowed no runs on just 2 singles to lock down the victory.
O'Ferrall was the only Hoo to get 2 hits, which created 3 RBI. He and Godbout made several defensive plays which prevented a comeback by the Devils.

Baseball scoring stats through the first 25 games

It is easy for me to watch a game and allow the results of that game extrapolate into my perception of the entire season. I decided to look at our results so far in 2024 to see how the Cavs were actually performing in our first 25 games. Virginia has scored a total of 272 runs for an average of 10.88 runs a game. We have scored more than 10 runs in a game 14 times and less than 5 runs twice. Virginia won our second lowest scoring game 4 - 3. Our opponents have scored 158 runs for an average of 6.32 runs. They have scored more than 10 runs 6 times and less than 5 runs 11 times.

Tony Bennett v. Brian O’Connor

First of all, both are legendary coaches. Both are the best we have ever had and both are sure fire Hall of Famers.

When BOC started his amazing reign, he loved small ball. He loved the purity of a 3-2 win. And we were GOOD. But then the game started to change. Other teams would roll into down with a bunch of sluggers and erase our small-ball lead with one swing of the bat. I am sure that Coach hated it, but he evolved and we were able to win the occasional 15-12 game. I am sure that recruiting doors were opened and we are still damn good.

For several years, I have been waiting for Tony to have a similar evolution. A 78-74 win counts just as much as a 58-54 win. Instead we are still bogged down with a bunch of frustrated looking players and a bunch of kids who visibly regress on the offensive end. Recruiting doors are closing and they will only be reopened when Tony LOOSENS UP. As one of the greatest basketball coaches of his generation, surely Tony can change and still win. But will he?

Virginia overcomes a shaky first inning to defeat Richmond 15 - 5

Beruvides started on the mound for Virginia. After retiring the first Richmond batter, the second batter reached on a swinging bunt. The next two batters walked before the next batter sent the ball into the left field bleachers to give Richmond a 4-0 lead. Woolfolk came in to pitch in the second inning. He gave up a walk and a RBI double in the 4th inning which ended to scoring by the Spiders. Kampschror got the final out in the 4th and was the winning pitcher. Augustin pitched the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings; Teel pitched the eighth, and Osinski pitched the ninth.
Virginia's bats came to life in the second inning, and the team scored at least one run in six of the next seven innings. Didawick led off in the second with an infield hit. He went to third on a single by Ferrence and scored on a sacrifice fly by Gotbout. Ferrence scored on a home run by Anderson. The Cavs knotted the score at 4 in the third when Didawick waked, stole second and came home on a single by Anderson. After Richmond took a 5-4 lead in the fourth, Virginia scored three runs on a home run by Didawick to take a 7 - 5 lead. Virginia scored once in the 6th on a RBI single by Didawick, A walk and three singles produced four more runs in the seventh. Consecutive singles in the eighth by Ferrence, Godbout, Anderson, and Hanson led to the final four runs.
Every place in the lineup produced at least one hit with O'Ferrall, Didawick, and Anderson each having three hits.. Didaiwck and Anderson both drove in four runs.
