CavsCorner Video: Brogdon and Wilkins talk UNC win

Following No. 3 UVa's 79-74 win over No. 7 North Carolina on Saturday night, senior guard Malcolm Brogdon and sophomore forward Isaiah Wilkins talked about the effort right out of the gate, what Wilkins went through this week to get himself ready, Brogdon's mindset on both ends of the floor, the role the crowd at JPJ played in the win, and more.

ACC still complicated ...

I don't think I can ever remember a season with this many potential scenarios with two games left for everyone. It is possible (though unlikely) that every team could up with six losses, and that every team 1-9 would have either 6 or 7 losses -- talk about some tie-breakers.

The ACC is guaranteed that a six-loss team will get a double bye after Pitt's thumping of Duke today and Notre Dame tripping up last time out. Guaranteed. Obviously, as someone noted this weekend, getting a top three seed will be highly, highly beneficial.

Again it is unlikely (and most likely ends tomorrow night in Chapel Hill), that UVa has a chance at an outright title. If the Hoos do somehow catch every break to win it outright, I think I'm heading straight out to put some money on them cutting down the nets in Houston!

More on Jay Huff

On February 23, Voyager Academy defeated Lakewood 73-31 in the state tournament. Huff apparently did not play. I suspect that this was a mercy move by his coach. Two nights later Voyager defeated Riverside 97-83, and Huff scored 28 points and had 19 rebounds. Yesterday Voyager defeated Weldon 75-60. Huff scored 12 points and had 8 rebounds.

Let's go Pitt

Big win yesterday. 2 Hoos wins and a loss from Miami and UNC gets the Hoos an ACC share again.

But here's the crazy scenario still in play for an outright:

Hoos win 2 - we'll be favored in both
Pitt beats Duke (pick-em)
Miami loses at (ND will be a short fave)
Miami loses at VT (Miami will be a short fave)
UNC loses at home to Cuse (UNC will be a ~7 pt fave so the most unlikely by the #s)
UNC loses at Duke (Duke will be a short fave)

So looking above, if the favorites hold, we get a share and we would need one swing game, one big upset and one minor upset to win it outright. I realize this is a lot of games that need to break our way, but it starts today with Pitt over Duke.

Some guys caught it and the way MB was playing who would want to watch anything else, but Hicks was about to go off and Tony put the freshman in. He has the body of a sophomore-junior and wasn't afraid to bang. I loved it. Not sure why some say he has slow feet. Yes, if a team works to spread them out obviously he would have some shortcomings but against bruisers the way Michigan State has pounded us the last two years there's a reason this kid's in a UVA uniform.

Wow seems awfully quite on here after what may be our biggest win of the year.

That was a well played game all around by both teams. We have really been sounder with the double this game as Tb has got the double coming while the ball is in the air. That is the way it should always be. I am so proud of this team and MB should have put to rest any question of player of the year. Do bad IW was off on his shot tonight as we would have won by 8 to 10 if he hits those 10-12 foot jumpers like he has been. His defense was great though. And how about the job MB and others did on Justin Jackson, I was really worried about him and he was a non factor. Great win. Now let's not let down at Clemson.

My main takeaways from today's win

It is great to be able to give up 74 points to UNC and still win. It wasn't garbage time points, either. We played at an accelerated pace for us.

If not for the gift they gave K for his 69th, we would currently be sitting in the 1 seed right now. Man, I can't get that last play in Cameron out my mind. No matter where we finish, we should be one game above.

Malcolm should be ACC POTY. Johnson is having a nice season but he isn't the player Malcolm is. Barber is quick and a scoring machine but he doesn't elevate his team like Malcolm. Allen is a good player but he is a dirty player, making Brogdon more deserving simply on personal character, The ACC should want Malcolm's face on this award.

How many wins do we need to not fall to a 3-4 seed

Win out in the regular season we are a 2 and maybe a 1, depending on ACCT and other things.

2-1 and a win in ACCT should keep a 2.

1-2 (UNC and Ville) I fear we could fall to a 3/4 line.

Let's be honest. Is there much difference between a 2-4? Either way by the 16 you are playing a good team. We have seen as a 2 you could end up playing a feisty 7-10 seed. Purdue, South Carolina, Wichita State in brackets I have seen would be 7-10 teams that would be tough 32 opponents even as a 2. Can't the tourney start now :)

Gameday

Love seeing Gameday live!

On the topic of Grayson Allen, Greenberg is crushing it saying Allen should have been suspended and Coach K needs to take responsibility. J-Will agrees.

But Bilas taking the attorney approach trying to focus only on the single incident rather than the overall pattern of behavior.

My favorite sign so far is "Even Christian Laettner hates Grayson Allen"...

Now onto the really good stuff - Virginia vs Carolina!

WAR ROOM-- 2.26.16

The WAR ROOM is back and this edition is full of football recruiting scoop! With the first Junior Day for the 2017 class coming this weekend, it's time for the coaching staff to host a number of prospects and start to build the foundation for the class. We'll give you a sense of who will be on Grounds tomorrow as well as review a number of offers that went out this week, which includes more than a dozen prospects and several of them will be in town when the Cavaliers host their big event tomorrow.

As always, what's said in the War Room, stays in the War Room. Let's go!

Visitors aplenty headed for The Hook

As the Wahoos have moved forward with recruiting in the next cycle, a key piece of the puzzle for Bronco Mendenhall and his staff has been offering players near and far. Tomorrow, they finally get their shot at getting some of these players in town and it seems like it should be a pretty successful event in terms of the kids who will be visiting.

For starters, there's a solid trio of players coming up from Woodberry Forest, including UVa's lone commit in the 2017, three-star tight end John Kirven as well as three-star quarterback Lindell Stone and three-star defensive back Terrell Jana. From out point of view, we wouldn't be shocked to see Jana pull the trigger at some point, though that's more on feel than outright intel on the 6-foot-1, 185-pound corner. Stone seems like a guy who is going to go through the process for a while but it'll be very interesting to see how the Cavaliers play this. He seems like a different sort of fit for the offense going forward, though he's not known as a runner perhaps as much as you'd think Virginia would want. But then again, having a dual-threat guy and a pocket passer in the same class is already something Bronco and Co. have shown they will go after.

As Rivals.com's Adam Friedman dropped on the board last night, UVa is expecting to host four-star Rivals100 Midlothian defensive back and current Arizona State commit Jermani Brown, who recently moved east from California. And he won't be the only four-star prospect from the Richmond area to attend as the Cavaliers will also host Rivals250 four-star linebacker Ellis Brooks as well.

The other top-rated in-state prospect expected to attend is four-star Cox defensive end Jordan Williams, a player who has been absolutely crushing it on the recruiting trail of late.

Elsewhere, Virginia is expecting to host another quarterback target in three-star signal caller Hendon Hooker, a 6-foot-5, 200-pound dual-threat QB from Greensboro (NC) Dudley. The Cavaliers are one of several early offers for Hooker in addition to NC State, Notre Dame, Old Dominion, Pitt, South Carolina, Syracuse, Wake Forest, and West Virginia, among others.

Staying in the state of North Carolina, UVa is also expecting Wahoo legacy and three-star ATH Germane Crowell to be back in Charlottesville tomorrow afternoon. And this is definitely one to watch going forward considering how highly he speaks of the Cavaliers.

The Covington (GA) duo of three-star linebacker Jaquan Henderson, a UCLA commit, and three-star wideout Jeremiah Holloman are also expected to be in town, as is recently offered three-star Bullis (MD) defensive back Damani Neal.

A busy, busy week on the offer front

When it comes to offers this week, this was easily the busiest of the cycle so far for the Wahoos. And given some of the talent they've identified, it could be significant when we look back on the 2017 class.

We'll handle these alphabetically this week, starting with Colin Anderson, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound linebacker from Killen (AL) Brooks. While he's still unrated, he's already got offers from Illinois, Iowa, Iowa State, Southern Miss, and Vanderbilt, among others, in addition to UVa.

One of several offensive lineman to pick up an offer from UVa this week was three-star Marshall (MN) prospect Blaise Andries. The 6-foot-6, 290-pound tackle was already a hot commodity, though, adding others into the mix this week including Florida. He also has offers from Arizona, Illinois, Iowa State, Kansas, Memphis, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Vanderbilt.

UVa was the first school to offer 6-foot-2, 175-pound ATH Joey Blount out of Fairburn (GA) Landmark Christian School. And it's easy to see why UVa likes the Peach State standout, who is expected to visit this weekend, from these clips.

The Cavaliers also offered four-star wideout Trey Blount, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound prospect from Atlanta (GA) Pace Academy, which is of course where former UVa great Chris Slade now coaches. The field for the Rivals100 receiver is already pretty crazy, since Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Michigan State, Notre Dame, and Tennessee, among others, have already offered.

UVa has been a frequent name attached to players in this cycle from Navarre (FL) and among them is 6-foot-5, 280-pound offensive lineman Nick Brahms. He'll be an interesting one to watch this spring in terms of the offers that come his way.

On Thursday night, the Cavaliers extended another offer in the Tar Heel State, this time to three-star Garner (NC) defensive end Matthew Butler. The 6-foot-3, 250-pound end also has offers from Duke, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, NC State, Penn State, Pitt, and Virginia Tech, among others.

Another quarterback now with an offer from the Wahoos, three-star dual-threat prospect Avery Davis was offered by UVa this week. The 5-foot-11, 188-pound Cedar Hill (TX) standout also has offers from Colorado, Houston, Iowa State, Kansas State, Notre Dame, Oregon State, and Utah, among others.

UVa also made a move and offered three-star Hoschton (GA) Mill Creek offensive lineman Tyler Fannin, who told CavsCorner this week that he'll visit Charlottesville next weekend. Fannin also has offers from Cincinnati, ECU, Illinois, Kansas State, Southern Miss, and Western Kentucky, among others.

While the Wahoos would probably have to be considered a long shot in this next one, they did offer four-star linebacker Levi Jones this week. The No. 17 player at outside linebacker, the 6-foot-2, 215-pound Austin (TX) Westlake standout has offers from Baylor, LSU, Nebraska, Oklahoma, TCU, and Texas, among others.

Elsewhere, UVa offered another three-star offensive lineman in Ben Petrula, a 6-foot-5, 321-pound tackle from Jersey City (NJ) St. Peter's Prep. BC, Kentucky, UNC, Rutgers, South Carolina, Syracuse, Temple, and Wisconsin have also offered so far. He too is expected to be in Charlottesville tomorrow for Junior Day.

We mentioned that Virginia had been busy at Navarre High School in Florida and another prospect from there to pick up an offer is 6-foot-2, 207-pound linebacker Aaron Mitchell.

Three-star offensive tackle Ryan Nelson also got offered by UVa this week. The 6-foot-6, 254-pound lineman from Buena Park (CA) is currently ranked as the No. 51 offensive tackle in the nation and has offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Cal, Nebraska, Utah, and Washington State.

The Cavaliers also offered Elon (NC) Western Alamance running back Darius Pinnix this week. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound back also has an early offer from Wake Forest.

Considering the needs UVa has in the trenches, it's not much of a surprise that the Cavaliers also offered four-star Rivals250 defensive tackle Greg Rogers this week. The 6-foot-3, 293-pound defensive lineman from Las Vegas (NV) Arbor View has offers from Arizona, Arizona State, BYU, Ole Miss, Nebraska, Oklahoma, UCLA, USC, and Washington, among others.

Another signal caller with an offer from the Wahoos, three-star dual-threat quarterback Jason Shelley also was offered by UVa this week. The Frisco (TX) Lone Star is already one of the top 100 prospects in the state and will certainly have a much bigger offer list soon.

Going back into the trenches, UVa also offered another rising prospect to watch and that's 6-foot-4, 265-pound offensive lineman Bryson Speas from Greensboro (NC) Dudley. He's among the visitors Virginia is expecting to host this weekend.

And finally this week, the Cavaliers have reportedly offered a pair of prospects from Fort Worth (TX) South Hills in twins Tracin Wallace, a three-star ATH, and Tylan Wallace, a three-star wide receiver.

The 6-foot, 175-pound Tracin has offers from Houston, Oklahoma State, and Vanderbilt while the 6-foot, 170-pound Tylan has offers from Arizona State, Houston, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Oregon.

That is it for this week, and as always, what's said here, stays here!

ACC Standings and Scenarios: Feb 27

After another week of ACC play, here's an update on the regular season title race, and potential ACC Tournament seeding:

Race for the Double Bye:
1. North Carolina (12-3): @UVa, Syracuse, @Duke
2. Miami (11-4): Louisville, @ND, @VT
3. Duke (10-5): @Pitt, Wake, UNC
4. Virginia (10-5): UNC, at Clemson, Louisville
5. ND (10-5): at FSU, Miami, NC State

  • With a loss on Saturday, UVa will be eliminated from the regular season title race. UNC would need just one more win to clinch the #1 seed in DC, since Louisville won't be there. (The Tar Heels have the H2H tiebreaker over Miami)
  • With Clemson's mid-week loss to Georgia Tech, the race for the four double bye spots in the ACC Tournament come down to five teams: UNC, Miami, Duke, UVa and ND.
  • UVa holds the H2H tiebreaker over ND, and with a win over UNC and Louisville, would hold those tiebreakers as well. UVa and Miami split their two games 1-1 so no H2H tiebreaker there, and Duke holds the H2H tiebreaker over UVa.
  • UVa still holds an outside shot at the #1 seed in DC, but will need to win out and get help. UNC will have to lose again, with a loss to Syracuse and win over Duke being a scenario that would benefit UVa the most. Miami would also need to lose at least one more time, with a loss to VT or Louisville being more beneficial to UVa than a loss to double-bye competitor ND.
  • A 3-0 record for UVa would deliver them a double-bye in the ACC Tournament. Anything worse than that, and it gets tricky. UVa could end up with a double bye at 12-6 in league play, but 11-7 or worse will probably lead to UVa playing on Wednesday in DC.
Rooting Interest:
Louisville at Miami (Today):
Root for Louisville. The Cards don't factor into the postseason, and Miami is a game up on UVa at the moment.
Notre Dame at FSU (Today): Root for FSU. UVa and ND are tied in the standings, and even though UVa has the tiebreaker over the Irish, another ND loss would be good insurance for the Hoos should they lose another game.
Duke at Pittsburgh (Sunday): Root for Pitt. Duke holds the tiebreaker over UVa, and a loss to Pitt could help the Hoos stay in front of Duke down the stretch and into the ACC Tourney.
Syracuse at UNC (Monday): Root for Syracuse. This one is pretty straightforward. Win or lose tonight, UNC wins do no good for UVa at this point.
Miami at ND (Wednesday): Root for Notre Dame. UVa holds the tiebreaker over the Irish, and it would be more beneficial to have the Canes lose than the Irish at this point.
UNC at Duke (March 5): TBD. After tonight, we'll know more about which team winning would benefit UVa more. If UVa beats UNC and the Heels beat Syracuse, then a Duke win probably helps UVa more, especially if Duke loses to Pittsburgh. But if UVa loses to UNC tonight and cannot catch them, then they'll probably rather have Duke lose for tiebreaker purposes.

How the rest of the league looks:
  • Boston College will be the 14 seed in the ACC Tournament, and with three more losses will finish 0-18 in league play. Ouch. They'll probably be joined on Tuesday in DC by Wake Forest (2-13), NC State (4-11) and either FSU (6-10) or Georgia Tech (6-9).
  • If Virginia Tech can get one more win, they'll likely land in the 8/9 game, and will probably face either Pittsburgh or Syracuse. There is an outside chance that Clemson could fall to the 8/9 game, but they're more likely to end up 6th or 7th.
  • This year, the 5th seed is the spot to avoid. It's usually a tough spot regardless, but with the balanced depth at the top of the standings, the path to an ACC title would be really tough for that team. If things stay as they are now, the 5th seed would be Virginia, based on tiebreakers. If the standings held to form, the Hoos would have to beat either NC State or Wake Forest on Wednesday, turn around and play Notre Dame on Thursday, then likely play UNC Friday in the semifinals. And that's just to reach the title game. That would be a very tough road, so the extra rest that comes with a double bye will be huge for those four teams. And since there are five solid teams at the top of the standings, getting the 4 seed and having to play the 5 seed wouldn't really be that beneficial either. Just ask Louisville, who had to open up ACC play last year by facing #5-seed UNC. A top 3 finish would put UVa in the best position to cut down the nets in DC next month.
