W&M Game Thoughts

1st Half-

I had no problem with our starting lineup today. As good as Salt will be he has nowhere near the offensive game that Tobey has. The effect that has is teams will shade that backside post to Gill. If you do that with Tobey then it's an easy put back.

Wilkins in that smaller lineup really did a good job and boy has he put on some muscle.

We have a tendency to still go through scoring lapses because we're settling for the outside jumpshot too much when we need to be pounding the ball inside out.

This team is solid in transition. I think that part of the game fits Thompson and MS the most.

Our defense on the interior was pretty solid today and our guards were actually able to get some steals when the William and Mary post put the ball on the ground.

Devon Hall can drive me nuts at times, but we need him.

When W&M went to a zone, we have a team that can expose you inside and out this year.

Needed to be more aware of shooters in transition. Dixon got us twice.

2nd half-

Started 2nd half going inside, but guys on the wing need to be ready to shoot.

We are getting a ton of steals today. Will help this team get easier points without gambling.

Long rebounds have hurt us all year. Just don't remember this being an issue in the past on long 3's.

Anyone else feel we are giving up too many points in the paint lately?

Gill should touch the ball on the block everytime we can't push in transition. Good things happen when he does.

Nolte and Wilkins both gave us much needed minutes. Nolte had much needed offense in the 2nd half during that drought.

I love DT when he can slash to the basket. Like I said above, his game is very good when we get out in transition and go or the spacing is good enough he can slash.

The season boils down to a few guys on different nights-

DT, Hall, Wilkins and Nolte

Speaking of DT, he is moving up to Adam Hall status on dunks.

WVU will be a test in a different manner. I think we will be ok if LP is back running the team.

Just need to tighten up the lapses at times on offense and defense. I will be very happy with 2-1 in the next 3.

I think Nova will be the toughest.

Bronco running a 3-4 or a 3-3-5?

I fully admit I've only seen a handful of BYU games. I THOUGHT that his base defense was a 3-4, but enough people have brought up the question that I'm having my doubts.

3-4s work in pretty much every context. 3-3-5 only works in pass heavy conferences like the Big 12 or Pac 12. Rich Rod single handedly DESTROYED the Michigan defense by trying to employ it in the "smashmouth heavy" Big 10. I have huge concerns about whether it would work in the ACC.

any word? rumor? transfer, draft, staying? Im assuming transfer would depend on who is named head coach at byu. Staying for a final year while learning a new system wouldn't be ideal. Bringing in a grad transfer to UVa for a year makes sense in this case because there would be no learning curve. He's the only one that knows the system. It would immediately make the transition easier. He would be a true coach on the field, while educating the younger QBs. We wouldn't have to wait to see who can adjust to the system. If he had any desire to coach later on, would be the perfect situation as well..

Q&A thread for Jared Lloyd

The last Q&A thread worked really well and I thought, ahead of tomorrow's introductory presser in Charlottesville, that I might open the floor and see what questions you guys have for Jared Lloyd, who covers BYU for the Daily Herald in Provo. As you might recall, he and I exchanged a lot of info in 2013 and 2014 when the two teams were about to play.

I'm scheduled to talk to him later tonight. I can't promise we'll get to everything you ask but fire away. I'll lock the thread after he and I finish up.

I didn't call this hire but ...

on Wednesday or Thursday, I did manage to throw out a few names as overlooked potential candidates who would be home runs and out of left field (per the Tony Bennett mold). I thought given the Richt money being discussed, that we might pull someone we didn't think would be in play (though I admitted some would be tough due to ties to the school). My list included Fitzgerald (NW), Calhoun (AFA), Whittingham (UU) and Mendenhall. Glad to see I'm not completely b@tsh!t crazy. :D

I found it truly rich that W&M coach was screaming to call the foul!

That was laughable seeing his players got away with TONS of and one hacks the refs didn't call all day. That hack on Tobey as the clock was running out, Nolte's second layup on the right with Pruwitt hacking; no call, countless body contact and that last shot by Reuter was clearly a double hack from #50, #22 from behind. These refs are awful on our home court. That #50 was basically body and hand bumping/pushing off as Reuter was trying to back in with seconds left. I backed it up and watched as #50 was using his hands to the lower back to keep Reuter's advancement and then on the turn, both #50 and #22 from behind hacks Reuter on his arm and wrist as they tomahawk swat at the ball; no call. The three point shot in the first half by Brogdon in the corner, you can clearly see the guard with a straighten arm makes more than causal contact as he attempts to stop Brogdon from following through, but Brogdon had already flipped his wrist, yet the zebras couldn't see the player's arm trying to stop his arm from going forward.

Here's my thing, if you are going to let the one team make body and arm contact on a shooter, then don't call fake flops when our guy goes running up on a shooter and you can clearly see he leans his leg or throws an arm toward a defender. That 3pter on Shayok and one was actually a good call, but the same ref doesn't make the and one when Brogdon his having his shooting arm crossed like swords in the act of shooting and nothing!

Glad to see the refs stop giving Pruwit that garbage leaning in falling down foul. He is really trying to capitalize on that freedom of movement DUMB rule with all the NBA style pivot and leaning in for the layup garbage with the cheap foul calls. They got away with numerous walks also on the one guard that shuffled his feet to pass out for the three. Lot of NBA extra step/shuffle by numerous under the basket shots.

I know people don't like the criticism of the refs, but come on man, that Brogdon in the lane layup had Dixon with an arm bar across the lane on Brogdon's arm as he made the last of his shots. I went back and looked at the series and just rolled my eyes how obvious Dixon had that arm bar when Brogdon got around him. Yet these refs call Hall and Wilkins on DUMB DOPEY BAIL OUT GHOST FOULS! Hall ALL ball on the steal as the guard was fighting for control. That last so call foul on Wilkins was actually a foul on the big guy with the hair in a bun. He had it blocked then he came down and had an arm bar on Wilkins neck/shoulder area to hold him trying to get the rebound. The refs really need to be called out on allowing inferior teams full of back yard hackers to have the freedom of hand checks, TONS of moving screens with CLEAR BODY CONTACT to impede our guys from shifting. Yes we won, but in close games this could have been a difference for an inferior team to STEAL like GW did with lack of calls and lots of freedom of movement on us calls. We should have won this by 30 or more if they had called W&M players with the under the basket hacks and push offs for the rebounds. Not impressed with that Pruwitt kid, he is a big time garbage player and gets away with a lot of hacks, monster body contact on moving screens and that garbage extra pivot lean around layups. I watched him in several games this year and was worried about the style in their previous games of back yard hacking with very few calls, and the same style to score on other teams.
For the record I have nothing against W&M and meet a reunion group when I was staying/visiting Williamsburg a month ago for 4 days. Very nice people and families.
I wanted to attend W&M when I was a teenager because of it's rich history with it's original charter with England, but didn't happen, went on to get two degrees from two other Universities and was at SMU law school when I was going through my divorce. Had to give it up because I had just retired from the military and was in a second career (was a Security Director at Four Seasons/resigned after offered Special Agent position with Justice Dept.) starting over and had those obligations of college funds for the kids, separate home cost, and of course 1250.00 month child support that ended my quest to get my law degree. Had a 3.9 GPA through two degrees and had a perfect 4.0 the first 6 months at SMU.

This may draw laughter, a roll of the eyes, or horror from some, lol

I had a thought. We have all been down on Oliver for the wacky scheduling of west coast teams and powerful teams. We have heard that he is a west coast guy and has many contacts out there. He brought us Fairchild from out there. We all love him for that. In the interview BH gave announcing he was leaving he thanks the committee, Littlepage, and Oliver. My thought was, this being a west coast guy, did Oliver's contacts out west help in this search? Did Oliver aid any in the hire of Mendenhall? It may be a possibility.

Bronco and roster management

given our complaints about roster management, it is interesting to think of how much more difficult that is at BYU with missions and injuries, defections, etc. Given his results, Bronco has done well with it. Turns out they now use a program written to help them with this. My brother sent me this link - a good read. http://m.heraldextra.com/sports/col...55f3-8d59-3c6391c4ab34.html?mobile_touch=true

Honestly would take Bronco over Mark Richt any day for two reasons.

He is 6 years younger and I imagine he has more to prove than Richt. This is his first shot at a P5 job and he is going to want to prove that he can do it on the P5 level. My only concern is how quickly and efficiently he can start recruiting the state and east coast being he has been in Utah the past 11 years. I am sooooooo very happy with this hire! I imagine I'd take this guy over almost all our candidates!
