CavsCorner Hot Board: Tuesday night update

I know that the one candidate that everybody wants to talk about is Mark Richt so we'll start there. Word I heard today was that UVa felt very, very good about getting a meeting with him and in talking to various sources earlier, it sounded like the Virginia job is one that he genuinely has a lot of interest in, so that meeting could be the one he's building up to at this point. Tonight, I'm told the meeting is "definitely" happening and it will be this week. I don't have the green light to say the day just yet but I trust my source on it. Fact is: UVa will get its chance.

That being said, I still continue to hear that Richt will be evaluating his options and taking meetings and that shouldn't worry folks. As I've stressed throughout, the plan was always to talk to multiple guys. In fact, in talking to one source tonight, Richt taking a little time allows the Cavaliers to perhaps talk to the guy that may be second on the board at this point.

That coach is Western Kentucky's Jeff Brohm. Word out of Hilltopper country is that Brohm is hitting pause on any coaching search stuff but that he's already said no thanks to a couple of opportunities. UVa is one that he'll seriously consider, per my sources, and on the UVa side he's a guy that is likely to get a conversation as well. Maryland continues to chase anything with a whistle it sounds like and should that job still be open, the Terps will want to have an interview with Brohm after this weekend, too. D.J. Durkin was in town today, though, and that's someone that's high on their list. They may not wait much longer and with good reason. Dino Babers is also in the mix, per my sources.

I'm still not hearing much on Greg Schiano related to UVa though I do think that with the Brohm tidbit above, it might be even more likely now that UVa takes a harder look at that group of current HCs than look at guys like Schiano, who I hear is seriously in the mix in Miami. At this point, I'd say we're getting closer to him drifting totally out of the periphery. Anyway, should Virginia look harder at Brohm and the like, I still hear Matt Rhule mentioned and think Matt Wells will continue to be in the mix. Missouri is still in a holding pattern of sorts, with DC Barry Odom having returned from his Memphis interview without taking that job. This relates to Wells because, at least as of yet, the Tigers haven't talked to him (despite reports to the contrary) but I think could look to depending on if they get any traction with Richt (debatable). That search may start to focus on Sonny Dykes, someone I was told pretty explicitly isn't on UVa's board right now.

I think that's a good place to leave it. Fire away.

Transition Offense-

I know LP was not playing and on short notice it's hard to adjust a game plan on something like this because it wasn't something we really expected to happen, but if we notice a trend this season teams are really packing it in, taking away our drive, forcing us to shoot 3's.

Luckily we were able to get enough against Ohio State where it didn't come back to haunt us, but I sat third row behind the bench and Jason W. was consistently on the guards about how our offensive flow was very stagnant. And I think this has a lot to do with London not playing, but we really need to push transition in games. Justin Anderson was key last year not only from 3, but getting us easy baskets. We all know what can happen when we're stuck in the half court and not knocking down shots. I really think this was more to do with LP being out. Our pace of play after GW is where it needs to be so we aren't that team relying on the jumper.

Teams with long posts who are quick can take away Gill on offense and put Tobey and Salt on the bench on defense because of their foot speed.

Getting those easy points will help this team who is giving up more easy baskets as well early on due to DA being gone.

OSU Game Thoughts in person

Funny watching my school live without having to travel far.

OSU will be good in a few years. Young, but you can see the talent and athleticism.

Our offense had no rhythm tonight. We were just setting screens not looking to punch inside much after they blocked a few shots. Really didn't push in transition like we needed to since they had the height inside.

Our depth without LP was needed tonight. Not a game we hang in a few years ago if we are running with 7-8 guys.

Gill got taken out of this game early. Why- teams with quick and long bigs can take away that spin move. That is why he needs to learn how to knock down that 12-15 foot jumper.

Our defensive awareness comes and goes right now. Have to tighten that up as season goes along.

Wilkins needs to step his game up some. Not bad on D, but offense needs to come along as the season comes along. (Did hit a key shot late)

Small ball against quicker teams is the way to go. Salt and Tobey don't have the foot speed. JR as he grows could be the post in that lineup later in the year.

The need to take open shots when teams pack in the paint needs to happen more. We were driving into traffic all night.

Now we see how much we can't lose LP. He is the glue to getting this team to the Final Four. MB and DT can run the point, but we are a better team with those guys off the ball.

It's good we got the win. Shows how far we have come. Like I said above this is a loss a few seasons ago. On the road in a decently loud place, we come get a team win, but still have a ton of work to do to get to that level of not getting bounced early in the tourney.

Our BLOB plays are not to the level of TB. Weird action we are running away from our normal stuff. Only say that because I was 3rd row trying to pick up new stuff.

Nolte, MS and Wilkins needs to find their way at times this season. Not in the same game, but different nights against certain teams

SI article on UVA, Schiano, and the wider coaching Carousel

Author: Peter Thamel

"Virginia: There are a lot of power brokers around the industry shaking their heads at the Cavaliers. Craig Littlepage's decision to wait until the end of the season to fire Mike London could end up costing the school a shot at hiring a quality coach. Consider that Iowa State has interviews lined up in the next few days. Virginia is clearly a better job, but it may whiff on a coach because it was too slow to act. Niamatulolo, Rhule, Schiano, Brohm and Frost could end up as candidates. But will some team have already snatched them up?

Prediction: Schiano"

Don't know where this will end up but passing this on for general attribution.

Giving Tuesday

Just as a reminder today is a national day of giving, whether it be money or time. Most places a having matching pools of funds for donations today. I gave to Gettyburg College, my undergrad, and my high school both of which matched my donation dollar for dollar.

So with that said if you haven't made your donations for the year today's a great day to do it.

CavsCorner Hot Board: Monday night update

I mentioned in another thread that sources had been extremely quiet over the last 24-32 hours. Well, that drought has subsided. And what I'm told is that the pursuit of Mark Richt continues with positive momentum just as it had prior to Georgia's announcement of his firing. In fact, according to our sources, the Cavaliers are "expecting to have a conversation" with him this week, though not on the same Monday/Tuesday timeframe as things appeared on prior to the UGA decision. The thinking, given the level of talks thus far, is that he does want to coach next year. My sources are still reluctant to give odds or anything of the nature but the information continues to be positive.

That being said, UVa is still, as I've said previously, looking to have multiple conversations. Sources were a bit unclear on exactly what the pecking order behind Richt looks like but suffice to say it's pretty long. At this point, I can tell you that Mike Sanford is on the list but my sources don't see him as a frontrunner yet. Mack Brown is also on the list, probably at or maybe just about Sanford, because the decision makers in this search are point "track record" pretty high up on their wish list. I still expect the other current HC candidates to get a look but there's a little growing momentum for Brown in large part because he's someone who has shown he can do the job. That experience, I'm told, is important. Lastly, Greg Schiano remains a name on the board but nothing at this point that would lead me to believe he's near the top of the list or surging there. Again, his experience could be intriguing but there is a small question about fit. I still have yet to hear enough about him to put him on the actual hot board. Lastly, Jeff Brohm is a guy I think that UVa will likely try to talk to but not until after his team plays in the CUSA title game this weekend.

With that, I'll open the floor for questions...

Q&A Thread...

I'm sure people have a lot of questions about this search and rather than hunting to see if their question has been answered in one of the numerous threads on the topic, I thought for this one specific thread we'll do things a little differently:

You ask, I answer. The only posts in this thread should be questions directed at me or my posts in reply. So please, no comments or opinions on the questions or answers. Don't worry about if it's already been asked or answered. In this thread, ask away and I'll answer.

Fuente to VT

Fuente to VT ESPN reporting. They wanted an "offensive minded current head coach". (That's what I want for us.) Foster to be retained. Great hire IMHO.

Lots of people on this site poopoo'd my idea of canning CML earlier and getting a jump on our next coach. Said that wouldn't help any, we can do behind the scenes searches. Well, you can't hire Fuente before your season's done like they did if you still have a coach like we do.

Fun early season RPI game ...

Ok, it's only a few games in and so one or two games skews everything, but see if you know who stands where at the moment in the RPI by matching teams to rankings (FWIW Hoos at 115 currently according to the four-letter network's RPI rankings).

1.) Ohio State
2.) William and Mary
3.) Cal
4). Oakland

A) 62
B) 85
C) 174
D) 277

I, for one, was shocked when I saw one of these numbers. Someone on the list does not have a top-250 win yet.
