Sunday Virginia-Miami Game Moved to 10 a.m. Start
Forecast for inclement weather prompts change

The first pitch for the Sunday (April 19) game of the Virginia-Miami baseball series at Davenport Field has been moved to 10 a.m. The game originally was scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., but a threat for inclement weather has prompted the change.

ACC game-management protocol stresses that every effort should be made to complete all three games in a conference series. With a high probability for inclement weather Sunday, this change will give the teams the best opportunity to play the complete game Sunday.

Fans with tickets for the Sunday game that cannot attend because of the new start time may exchange their tickets in advance for a General Admission ticket to any remaining regular-season game. Fans can exchange their tickets by calling the Virginia Athletics Ticket Office at (800) 542-8821 during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., or bringing their ticket stubs to the gate for General Admission seating at any remaining regular season home game, subject to seat availability at the time of arrival.

Customers may purchase tickets by logging on to VirginiaSports.com. Tickets will also be sold at the Davenport Field ticket windows beginning one hour prior to each home game.

Free parking will be available in the University Hall, John Paul Jones Arena and McCue parking lots.

I was wondering since we can sit anywhere we like during the spring game it would be cool that the cavs corner board sit together. Anyone coming up today? Sorry I thought of this so late. It just hit me this morning.

I do not see much chater about the Football Spring Game, maybe folks still have a bit of a hangover over BBall and JAs departure. If my plans hold up I expect to be there. Anyone else???

Virginia Defeats No. 9 Miami, 5-4
McCarthy records three hits, while Coman hits key two-run double

The Virginia baseball team picked up a 5-4 win over No. 9 Miami Friday evening in front of 3,589 fans at Davenport Field. In snapping a nine-game Miami win streak, the Cavaliers (23-14, 8-11 ACC) got clutch, two-out hitting while the bullpen worked six innings after starting pitcher Nathan Kirby (Jr., Midlothian, Va.) exited after just three innings with a strained left lat muscle.

"That was our best team win of the season," Virginia head coach Brian O'Connor said. "Miami has a good ballclub and has lot of guys back from their team last season. It was just a total team effort and I'm really proud of them. They grinded it out."

Virginia finished with 11 hits and scored four of its five runs with two outs. Joe McCarthy (Jr., Scranton, Pa.) finished 3-for-4 and is now is 5-for-7 in his two games since returning to the lineup Wednesday after missing 11 weeks following back surgery. Robbie Coman (Jr., Lake Worth, Fla.) had two hits and two RBI, while Matt Thaiss (So., Jackson, N.J.) also recorded a pair of hits. Miami (29-10, 14-5) picked up nine hits, including a pair of extra-base hits from Christopher Barr.

David Rosenberger (Jr., Bethlehem, Pa.) earned the win out of the UVa bullpen after allowing one run over 2 2/3 innings in relief of Kirby, who worked three sharp innings and allowed two hits and a walk before leaving the game. Josh Sborz (Jr., McLean, Va.) pitched the final 2 1/3 innings to notch his 10th save. Miami starter Thomas Woodrey (4-2) took the loss after allowing four earned runs, nine hits and a walk over 6 2/3 innings.

Virginia took the early lead with a run in the third inning as Adam Haseley (Fr., Windermere, Fla.) drew a one-out walk and scored when Daniel Pinero (So., Toronto, Ontario) doubled to left-center. The Cavaliers upped their lead to 2-0 in the fourth when Kevin Doherty (Jr., Laytonsville, Md.) singled to right-center to score McCarthy.

Miami pulled to within 2-1 in the fifth inning on an RBI groundout from Carl Chester, but Virginia countered in the bottom of the inning when Coman ripped a two-out, two-run double down the left-field line, bringing home Pavin Smith (Fr., Jupiter, Fla.) and McCarthy, who slid in just before the tag at the plate.

The Hurricanes scored two runs in the seventh inning, getting a one-out RBI triple from Barr and an RBI single from pinch hitter Johnny Ruiz against Alec Bettinger (So., Woodbridge, Va.). A UVa error on a potential double-play ball prolonged the inning, but Bettinger got Garrett Kennedy to fly out to center and Sborz entered and induced a foul out to first base from George Iskenderian to end the threat.

Virginia continued its propensity for key two-out hitting in the eighth inning as it tacked on a crucial insurance run. Thaiss led off with a single to left field. Pinch runner Thomas Woodruff (Sr., Clifton, Va.) stole second base and scored with two outs as Haseley hit the 1-2 pitch from Michael Mediavilla to right field for a double.

Miami put its first two runners on base in the ninth inning as Barr doubled and Jacob Heyward reached on a Pinero fielding error. Sborz buckled down though and retired the next three batters. Ricky Eusebio bunted the runners to second and third, and Kennedy knocked in Barr with a grounder to Ernie Clement (Fr., Rochester, N.Y.) at second base. Iskenderian grounded out to second to end the game.

Game 2 of the series is slated for 1 p.m. Saturday. WINA 1070-AM and VirginiaSports.com will have the live audio broadcast. The radio broadcast also will air across select stations on the Virginia Sports Radio Network.

McCarthy was 3 for 4 and scored 2 runs. Coman was 2 for 3 and had 2 RBI, and Thaiss was 2 for 4. Kirby started and left after 3 innings with a sore arm. Rosenberger pitched the next 2.2 innings and was the winner. Bettinger pitched 1 inning and gave up 2 earned runs. Sborz got the save after pitching the last 2.1 innings. He gave up 1 unearned run in the 9th. It was an exciting game aided by the home plate umpire who seemed to be doing a coin toss to decide balls and strikes.

I saw that Lacey from NCSU and Hanlan from BC also declared for the draft. It's hard to believe that so many guys are leaving early with such a crowded field already declared.

UNC is going to be a big beneficiary of having everyone come back. Sure hope Roy and manage to mess things up somehow. I think Justin Jackson is going to be a big key for them next year.

All three frosh are gone from Duke....

Joe McCarthy and Jack Gerstenmaier played for the first time this year as UVA defeated W&M 3-2. Joe was 2 for 3 with a walk, and Jack was 3 for 4, and it took a diving catch by the Tribe CF to keep him from having a perfect night. Casey was the starting pitcher and gave up both runs. Bettinger pitched 2 innings and Sborz pitched the 9th. Towns had 2 RBI with a HR and a single.

Now that JA is official and by his statements seems like he is not changing his mind; Would you say this turned out to be the most disappointing end to a combined football/basketball season that started with such incredibly high expectations?

Who are the only three teams in the ACC who have never lost to a FCS team!

In case you haven't noticed, tMB is totally funked up with their new updates. It's simply awful. Please tell me cavscorner won't have those changes too.

Hard for me to fathom the doom and gloom today Anderson made a choice, one that he felt was in his overall best interest. HOWEVER, Justin going pro does NOT signal the demise of Hoos hoops. Rather, his leaving merely transforms a team that was SET into one that must EVOLVE.

Personally, the evolving team may just be the better team come March.

CTB has assembled a squad with great depth and experience. However, with JA departing, new players will need to step up.

The opportunity is there for Shayok, Hall and Thompson. Nolte will have his opportunity as well, and if he finds his shot it may be his time to shine. But regardless, the three kids (all SO), will have every chance to provide greater playmaking and transition hoops for this team.

By March CTB will have formed the new nucleus and these kids will have had the experience of stepping up in big games. Hard to see today, but this may end up being a team that by March will have found itself, one that may force TB out of some of the set patterns and open things up a little more.

I love Justin Anderson for all the great moments he provided. But I do NOT think his leaving will be the end of hope for winning the National title- I am NOT changing my sig! GO HOOS!!

Virginia Defeats William & Mary, 3-2
Gerstenmaier racks up three hits in college debut, while McCarthy goes 2-for-3 in return to lineup


The Virginia baseball team scored a 3-2 win over William & Mary Wednesday evening at Davenport Field. Kenny Towns (Sr., Burke, Va.) hit the tiebreaking RBI single in the seventh inning as UVa (22-14) won its ninth consecutive game against the Tribe (15-19).

Two key cogs in the Virginia lineup returned from injuries Wednesday: All-ACC outfielder Joe McCarthy (Jr., Scranton, Pa.) and freshman Jack Gerstenmaier (Richmond, Va.). McCarthy missed the Cavaliers' first 35 games following back surgery in January, while Gerstenmaier made his UVa debut after suffering a severe hamstring injury in September. Both were key factors Tuesday as they combined for half of UVa's 10 hits: Gerstenmaier went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while McCarthy was 2-for-3.

"That was a really fun baseball game. I was really proud of how our guys competed," Virginia head coach Brian O'Connor said. "We had 10 hits, but there were a lot of other balls there were squared up pretty well. It was really good to see Derek Casey - he would bend but he wouldn't break. That's somebody who is really maturing and that's certainly a real positive. Having Joe McCarthy and Jack Gerstenmaier playing tonight for the first time this season and for them to perform, was really cool. A lot of times you have a guy come back after not playing for a while, and they're a little rusty and they struggle, but they both were aggressive, which was good to see and very encouraging."

Virginia got a strong start from rookie Derek Casey (Mechanicsville, Va.), who worked six innings of two-run baseball, giving up five hits and no walks while striking out four. UVa relievers Alec Bettinger (So., Woodbridge, Va.) and Josh Sborz (Jr., McLean, Va.) combined to pitch three perfect innings as the Cavaliers retired the final 12 William & Mary batters in order. Bettinger (3-1) fired two frames to earn the win, while Sborz pitched the ninth and notched his ninth save.

In addition to Gerstenmaier and McCarthy's big days, Towns homered and drove in a pair of runs.

William and Mary reliever Charlie Fletcher (3-1) took the loss, while starter Mitchell Aker worked 5 1/3 innings, giving up two runs, eight hits and a walk while fanning four. Cullen Large and Ryan Hissey each went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Tribe.

William & Mary opened the scoring with a run in the third inning. Large hit a two-out single and came around to score on a double to left-center by Hissey.

UVa scored twice in the fourth inning. Towns swatted a leadoff home run to left-center, his third blast of the season. McCarthy then singled, moved to second on a Kevin Doherty (Jr., Laytonsville, Md.) sacrifice and scored on a Gerstenmaier single to left.

The Tribe again struck with two outs in the fifth. Casey hit Luca Farina with a pitch and then was called for a balk, moving the runner to second. Large followed with a run-scoring single to left.

UVa manufactured the eventual winning run in the seventh. Daniel Pinero (So., Toronto, Ontario) hit a leadoff single up the middle and with one out, he advanced to second on a balk and to third on a wild pitch. With the infield pulled in, Towns ripped a single back up the middle to give UVa the lead.

Virginia remains home this weekend as No. 9 Miami visits Davenport Field for a three-game series beginning at 6 p.m. Friday. The teams also are slated to play at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

With next year being a big year, we need a scorer/shooter on the wing. Two spots open right now - I'm thinking we fill one and save the other. I'm not seeing anyone out there other than Lee that seems like a fit right now. It'll be interesting to see where Bennett goes from here. Huge chance for current roster members to work hard over the summer and grab major PT. Losing Justin hurts but I think we'll be fine. Lost Joe and Akil the year before and won 30 last year, lost a comparable Justin/Darion this year, yet I still think we win 30 next year. What was scheduled to be a boring off season now gets very interesting. Gotta love Wahoo basketball these days! Go Hoos!

Most of his points were of the dribble and driving. Really good handle on the ball. Made up for a poor. IMHO last night.

Just curious if either of you guys is planning an update on what happens now since the team has 2 more schollies to use than we might have expected at this point. Curious what the odds are on grad transfer/transfer/late recruit/sitting on schollies are.

He's a 6'8" small forward, highly rated out of HS, signed with Louisville, played very little one year, then transferred to Gonzaga, where he played little behind some good frontline players. He's highly athletic, thought to have potential as a good defensive player, but never seemed to understand Mark Few's system. He's immediately eligible as a grad transfer. Intriguing prospect at a position of need.
