FRIDAY: 5-2 Tech
- Tech moves a game in front of the Hoos in the ACC standings with the win.
- Hoos had their chances, especially early. But they left the bases loaded in the second (an inning that started with Jake Gelof getting thrown out trying to stretch a leadoff double into a triple) then left two in scoring position in the third. They also hit into a pair of double plays.
- After Casey Saucke’s RBI single cut Tech’s lead to 2-1 in the fourth, UVA didn’t get another hit or have a baserunner reach scoring position until Chris Newell led off the ninth with a home run. Newell went 3-for-3; the Hoos as a team had eight hits.
- Despite some early struggles, Tech starter Griffin Green (7-1) out-dueled UVA’s Nate Savino (4-4). Griffin went seven innings, giving up one run on seven hits while walking four and striking out a pair.
- Savino got lifted in the sixth after what looked like an inning-ending double play got reversed to a fielder’s choice, with the runner safe at first. Jay Woolfolk came on and gave up back-to-back two-out RBI doubles that extended Tech’s lead to 4-1. Savino’s final line: three runs on four hits with four walks and seven strikeouts in 5 2/3.
