FINAL: 8-2 UVA
- This won’t go down as the prettiest win of the season. The two teams combined for seven errors: four by the Spiders and three charged to UVA. Richmond pitchers also issued seven walks and hit three batters, and threw seven wild pitches.
- Virginia pitchers combined to walk just one, charged to starter Devin Ortiz. Ortiz also struck out eight and gave up just two hits in four complete. Both Richmond runs were charged to reliever Jay Woolfolk, an unearned run in the fifth and another on a solo homer by one-time Wahoo Andrew Papantonis in the sixth inning.
- After the homer, the Spiders didn’t have another player reach base after that homer until there were two outs in the ninth. Matt Buchanan, Dylan Bowers, Matt Wyatt and Will Geerdes combined to retire 11 straight Richmond batters before a Geerdes HBP. As a group, UVa’s six pitchers combined to strike out 13 give up just three hits.
- UVa put up 11 hits at the plate. Griff O’Ferrall reached base in five of his six plate appearances, going 3-for-3 with two walks and a sac bunt. O’Ferrall also scored twice. He’s now hitting .351.
- Ortiz and Jake Gelof each finished with two hits, drove in a run and scored once. Ortiz had a pair of doubles, and was robbed of another RBI when Papantonis made a nice play at second base on a line drive to end the fourth.
- Freshman Ethan Anderson returned to the starting lineup for the first time since injuring a thumb against Boston College (he did make one pinch-hit appearance at Wake). He went 1-for-5 with an RBI single.
