Primarily because of Ralph Sampson, there were few games in which Virginia was not favored between the 1979 - 1980 and the 1982 - 1983 seasons. One of these came in the 1981 - 1982 season. Early in the season North Carolina, which was led by Sam Perkins and James Worthy, had a 12 - 0 record and number #1 ranking when Virginia, which was ranked #2, played in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels won 65 - 60. On February 3, 1982 #2 UNC visited #3 UVA at University Hall. Virginia built a 39 - 24 half time lead and never looked back. Othell Wilson scored 20 points for the Cavaliers, Sampson had 18 points and 12 rebounds, and Craig Robinson added 14 points. Virginia played excellent defense and won 74 - 58. There was great joy in Hooville that evening.
