was a must win game. We have now reached the mid-point of the season, and the problems that we experienced against weak competition but overcame are still evident against competition which is only slightly better. The problems begin with the Offensive Line that the staff inherited after graduation and transfers.
They still have been unable to hold blocks on pass plays to allow us to regularly try deep passes. This allows our opponents to bring their defensive backs closer to the line of scrimmage and further impacts
the running game. Since Bronco arrived, we have been unable to consistently make first downs on short yardage situations, and this was very evident today.
We are still making mental mistakes which lead to unnecessary penalties.
Wide receivers are still dropping passes which they caught last year and either run poor routes or correctly run poorly conceived routes. Each game we seem to have several plays in which our receivers are close enough to dance with each other.
My expectations for success were limited because I believe that games are won in the trenches, and I anticipated that this would be a problem. I did think that the situation would improve as the season wore on, but I have not yet seen evidence that this has happened. i also felt that improvement would be necessary in order to help our recruiting effort. There is still some time left, but it is getting short.
