TUESDAY FINAL: 14-4 UVA
- It was a return to the norm after Sunday’s loss to Duke. The offense pounded out 14 runs on 12 hits. Three pitchers combined to strike out 12 and walk just two, while giving up nine hits. The defense didn’t commit an error until the top of the 9th.
- Kyle Teel, Chris Newell, Casey Saucke and Devin Ortiz all homered. Those four home runs match the most in a game for the Hoos this season. Ten different players had hits today; seven drove in runs, six scored.
- Teel’s homer was a line drive into the UVA bullpen in right field for a grand slam that got the Wahoos on the board in the third. He also had an RBI triple and a single, matching his career high with five RBI.
- Newell and Saucke went back-to-back to lead off a five-run fourth inning. Saucke’s was an absolute bomb, clearing the camera tower in dead center next to the batter’s eye. It carried an estimated 433 feet. Ortiz hit a two-run shot into the left field seats in the seventh, the last of his three hits on the day.
- UVA has now scored at least 10 runs in its first 10 home games to start the year.
- Freshman Matthew Buchanan threw 3 2/3 scoreless in his first college start, giving up just one hit and walking one while striking out six. Dylan Bowers was charged with two runs on three hits in two innings of relief. Second-year RHP Avery Mabe, making his college debut, struck out three and walked one while giving up two runs (one unearned) on five hits in the final 3 1/3.
