Most on this board have lamented about the offensive side of the ball for years when it comes to UVa. I've broken down the defense and in my opinion, it has exceeded what should be expected given the evaluations of those kids coming out of high school. So how should the offense be performing at this point? Is it falling below it rankings, above, or is right where it probably should be given the talent? Let's break it down (by way of the depth chart):

QB
JR - Bryce Perkins - 5.7***

RB
SR - Jordan Ellis - 5.5***
JR - Chris Sharp - 5.4**
SO - PK Kier - 5.5***
SO - Lamont Atkins - 5.6***
SO - Jamari Peacock - 5.5***
Average: 5.5

OL
SR - Jake Fieler - 5.5***
SR - Marcus Applefield - 5.5***
JR - RJ Proctor - 5.4**
SO - Chris Glaser - 5.6***
SO - Dillon Reinkensmeyer - 5.4**
SO - Ben Knutson - 5.5***
rFR - Ryan Nelson - 5.7***
rFR - Gerrik Vollmer - 5.4**
rFR - Ryan Swoboda - 5.5***
FR - Bobby Haskins - 5.5***
Average: 5.5

TE
SR - Evan Butts - 5.5***
JR - Tanner Cowley - 5.4**
Average: 5.45

WR
SR - Olamide Zaccheaus - 5.5***
JR - Joe Reed - 5.6***
JR - Hasise Dubois - 5.6***
SO - Terrel Jana - 5.5***
FR - Tavares Kelly - 5.5***
Average: 5.54

Overall Average: 5.538

Averaging out the positions, the offensive ranks to be very average. Some have probably outplayed their ratings (OZ, Reinkensmeyer, Ellis), while others have only been able to give us glimpses that they very well could outplay their rankings (Kelly, Kier, Atkins) and others that have either played to their rankings or have not yet quite made it to their billing. The sad part in all this is there is not a single 4 star player on the depth chart.

Looking at the players coming in to help with depth and hopefully give the offense a jolt:

OL - Ja'quay Hubbard - 5.8****
RB - Michael Hollins - 5.6***
WR - Major Williams - 5.6***
ATH - Seneca Milledge - 5.6***
OL - Zachary Teter - 5.5***
WR - Dorien Goddard - 5.5***
WR - Jarius Satiu - 5.5***
OL - Kariem Al Soufi - 5.4**
OL - Johnathan Leech - 5.4**
ATH - Tiquest Terry - 5.3**
Average: 5.52

I look for Hubbard to compete for playing time next season, but outside of that I'm not sure who else would emerge for early playing time, but perhaps one of the receivers is able to stand out.

In conclusion, a few things HAVE to happen in order for the offense to improve:
1) Recruiting needs to improve. The defense has a few 4 stars and some high 3 stars to help bolster depth and compete for immediate playing time.

2) Coaching needs to improve. On the defensive side of the ball, the majority of the contributors were lowly recruited players (Snowden's only offer was UVa) that have been coached up and put in positions for them to succeed. That has yet to happen on the offensive side, especially the offensive line.

3) Play calling needs to improve. As stated above, the defensive coaches have been able to put their players in a position to have success with where players are positioned and scheme. This is where I think the offense has the most to gain.

EXTRA: One silver lining is the offense has youth (14 of the players listed on the depth chart are FR, rFR or SO, 7 of those are on the offensive line) that still has a chance to improve after gaining some experience this year.
