There were some issues with the counter option, A-back reverses, and QB lead plays — and the infamous double move — but the defense acquitted itself more than quite well.

Hanback, Famui and Thompson were beasts. Snyder, Mack and Peace were cleaning up plays in the gaps. Thornhill and Nelson were all over the field. Hall did a great job getting off blocks on the edge.

In all, 305 yards allowed were the third fewest for a UVa defense against a Johnson team. Only 259 in 2008 and 296 in 2011 were better. And the one offensive touchdown allowed was the fewest for the Hoos against a Johnson-led Wreck squad.

Outstanding effort from our M.A.S.H. unit D.

Even if this game didn’t turn out to be a W, at least we’re not apothetic any more. And I’m giddy about its future with guys like Briggs, Smiley, Jackson and Stewart in the fold.
