People have had this debate before. ACC was way tougher in the 80's, but you can't deny what TB is doing. I always felt Terry after Ralph didn't get the most out of decent teams. Olden getting kicked out of school didn't help.
I was crunching some numbers, and I was a little surprised to see that Tony's last 5 years are right there in comparison to Holland's best 5. Holland compiled a record of 133-35 in 79-84, winning 79% of his games. In TB's hot stretch, he's 134-41, winning 77% of his games. The clear difference in the two is the postseason success that Coach Holland experienced. In that 5 year stretch, he won a NIT Chip, made a Sweet 16 & Elite 8, then the two Final Four appearances. That's extremely impressive. We obviously know what Coach B has done. It includes not making the dance, a first round loss, Round of 32 appearance, Sweet 16, and an Elite 8. What's interesting is the 5 years following Holland's impressive run, his record was only 92-66, a 58% success rate. In those 5 years, he failed to make the tournament twice, suffered two first round losses, and had another Elite 8 run. Post Ralph, the sledding got tougher! I definitely don't see Tony being anywhere around a .580 winning pct these next 5, more like exactly what he's pulled off these previous five actually, in the 75-80% range. However you look at it, it's a great time to be a Virginia Basketball fan. Tony always talks about staying steady and putting yourself in positions to be successful aka "keep knocking" and the rewards will come. They most definitely will, and all of Hoo Nation looks forward to it coach.
