He can be a leader or he can be an ornament. Many of you may have noticed how I have been posting 6-6 is a possibility. Many of you are misunderstanding the observation for some sort of backing of Mike London and/or a sign of real progress. What I see is a defense that is playing much better, 26 and 21 points given up against high octane UNC and GT the last two games. AND, I believe there was a near pick 6 in both games (4 INTs versus UNC) giving the opponent red zone field position? So, you might could say the D gave up 19 and 14 points against those offenses. ALSO, incredible considering the offensive line injuries, but UVa has rushed the ball for 204 and 233 yards those two games. The different styles of running backs is a weapon and they seem to really be hitting their stride.
Now, you may be wondering where I am going with this considering the thread title. We have talked about the Mike London follies, ad nauseam. The timeout issues, the pregame pep talks, the delay of game penalties, the half time interviews, the sideline demeanor.....let us put all that to the side. Many of you have also read me post that when UVa wins against a FBS or ACC team, they are always hanging on for dear life at the end in a game they should win by three scores. It happened again Saturday. Up 27-13, UVa went into its scared it was going to win mode and frittered away at least two series of downs by running into the center's butt three times. Here is where a head coach needs to take charge. He needs to walk over to Steve Fairchild, slap him upside his cranium and say, "DON"T STOP ATTACKING, BURY THESE GUYS!" If this ever happens, I will start to actually have some real hope. I mean, if UVa were to have gotten up on GT 27-13 last week and actually extended the lead with an attacking drive like the game wasn't over (because it wasn't over), we might have witnessed a real turning point. As it is, UVa could win 3 of the last 4 games in much the same fashion and no real progress would have taken place. Mike needs to coach the team and that includes the damn assistants. Stop being a hood ornament!
