I was born in 1981. My dad immediately indoctrinated me as a Yankees fan. My mom, at the same time, indoctrinated me as a Broncos fan. It was painful in the 80's and early 90's. It was pure joy for the 10 years after. To make a long story short, I've gotten used to seeing my sports teams at their very best and very worst.
I don't even claim to have wisdom, but I do think I've gotten more than my fair share of perspective over the years. I know the various fan bases tend to focus on how their own team is performing, but that's the wrong way of looking at it. You need to focus on how the entire sport is faring. Oklahoma lost on the road tonight. Next week, there will be a 6th team ranked number 1 before the end of January. I have no idea how far you need to go back, but I saw a stat that the last time there were 5 No. 1 teams before the end of January was in 1983.
I am the first person to say that there are problems with this team. What I hope the board will take away from this post is that you need to look at what is happening with college basketball as a whole this year. After tonight, only Xavier will have 1 loss. I'm not counting SMU because they're ineligible for the tourney and the fan base is out of their mind if they think it will last. THERE ARE ZERO TEAMS THAT WILL GO WITH 2 LOSSES OR LESS THIS YEAR. Most likely 3 or less.
UVA is a flawed team. So is every other team this year. Unless the NCAAT has gone to 25 teams or less, and I missed the memo, we are absolutely going to make the tourney. We may not get a 1 or 2 seed, but there is no team that we can't beat this year. We are dangerous in the tourney. Stay calm and we will eventually whether the storm.
P.S., for those of you who were making fun of me (namely the usual suspect) for cheering for every ACC team against every non-ACC team, this is why I do it. Boosting our RPI is always important. We won't ever be the 2014 Kentucky team, with 6 future NBA players, and cruise through the regular season. The reason why we haven't crashed in the polls is because of our superior RPI performance.
