In several ways Virginia broke the mold in the defeat of Coastal Carolina. The team's offense had been largely dependent on the performance of Colandrea, but instead of an abundance of pass-run option plays, Virginia relied heavily on power running plays. The Cavs ran 58 times for a net of 384 yards and a 6.6 yards per carry average. Brown led the way with 9 rushes for 171 yards for a 19 yards per carry average. We passed just 23 times for 141 yards. Fields was the receiver on 4 of the passes for 65 yards and 2 touchdowns, and Neville gained 31 yards on just 2 catches.. Nine different players caught at least 1 pass. This allowed Virginia to make two first downs on fourth down.
On defense we allowed just 82 yards on 24 runs by a team that had featured the run in their previous games. On the other hand, Virginia allowed 16 pass completions on 33 attempts for 302 yards. Our special teams had been erratic this year, but with the exception of 1 kickoff which went out of bounds, our kickers did well. Sparks kicked off 8 times for 445 yards and a 5.6 yard average. He also punted 3 times for 140 yards and a 46.6 yard average. Bettridge made all 3 of his field goal attempts.
Elliott was able to give the reserves some important playing time.
