The Cavs scored 5 runs in the 2nd inning on four singles and two doubles on a cold day with the wind blowing hard from center field. The lead was extended to 8 to 1 . Pitt scored twice in the 6th to cut the lead to 8 to 3. Pitt scored again in the 7th and had the bases loaded with 0 outs. Tonas came out of the bull pen and got a strike out and a double play to end Pitt's rally. He pitched the 8th and 9th innings and allowed just one meaningless single. Blanco pitched the first 5.2 innings and gave up 3 runs on 7 hits to get the win.
Whalen was hit in the head with a fast ball as the second batter in the game and was replaced by Stephan. Every position player then got at least one of the 14 hits by Virginia.
