10. SYRACUSE (last season: 10-8 ACC (tied for 6th), 20-14 overall)

For a team that struggled to score, losing 3 of its top 4 scorers without any clear replacements could be problematic. That is what faces Jim Boeheim’s Orange team this season, as they lose 4 starters from last season’s team that once again squeaked into the NCAA tournament.

The Cuse will be long, by design, which is important for Boeheim’s 2-3 matchup zone to be effective. The team returns a few experienced players, led by wing Elijah Hughes and forward Marek Dolezaj. Boeheim’s son, Buddy, will likely start this season as he proved to be a deep threat in his freshman year. The wild card for this team could be incoming freshman Joe Girard, III. Unranked by Rivals, Girard is New York’s Gatorade player of the year and scored over 4,000 points in his high school career, averaging 49 ppg as a senior. He also quarterbacked his school’s state championship football team and was MVP of the Capital Classic All Star game this past April in Washington, D.C. If Girard’s game can translate to the college level, he could inject much-needed scoring into the Syracuse lineup and help get the Orangemen back into the NCAA tourney once again.

Returning players: Marek Dolezaj, 6’10”, 180 lbs., F, Jr., 4.1 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 37.9% 3-pt.; Elijah Hughes, 6’6”, 215 lbs., G/F, Jr., 13.7 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 36.9% 3-pt.; Bourama Sidibe, 6’10”, 205, C, Jr., 1.9 ppg, 2.7 rpg; Howard Washington, 6’3, 180 lbs., G, Jr., ; Buddy Boeheim, 6’5”, 188 lbs., G, So., 6.8 ppg, 35.3% 3-pt.; Robert Braswell, 6’9”, 184 lbs., F, So., 2.2 ppg; Jalen Carey, 6’3”, 168 lbs., PG, So., 3.5 ppg, 17.4% 3-pt.

New players: Brycen Goodine, 6’4”, 185 lbs., SG (Rivals #92); Joe Girard, III, 6’1”, 180 lbs., SG (averaged 49 ppg as senior in HS, over 4K points in career, QB on NY state champ FB team, MVP of Capital Classic all-star game); John Bol-Ajak, 6’10”, C; Quincy Guerrier, 6’7”, SF; Jesse Edwards, C.

9. GEORGIA TECH (last season 6-12 ACC (10th place), 14-18 overall)

It’s tempting to pick the Yellow Jackets much lower than this, but Josh Pastner does have a very solid backcourt returning in junior Jose Alvarado and sophomore Michael DeVoe. Good guard play is essential in a tough league like the ACC and this twosome can hang with any backcourt in the league this season. Rugged James Banks returns inside, but Tech hopes it can get better inside play from one of its many other returning big men. Pastner has yet to make the big recruiting splash that his bosses hoped for when he was hired away from Memphis. This is a critical season for Pastner to show improvement and stay away from the coach’s hot seat.

Returning players: Sylvester Ogbonda, 6’10”, 237 lbs., F, Sr., 1.8 ppg; Shembari Phillips, 6’3”, 202 lbs., G, Sr., 2.1 ppg ; James Banks, 6’9”, 243 lbs., F/C, Sr., 10.5 ppg; 7.7 rpg; Jose Alvarado, 6’0”, 176 lbs., PG, Jr., 12.5 ppg; 3.9 rpg, 3.4 apg; 1.8 spg; Evan Cole, 6’9”, 217 lbs., F, Jr., 4.1 ppg, 2.5 rpg; Moses Wright, 6’9”, 221 lbs., F, Jr., 6.7 ppg; 3.7 rpg; Michael DeVoe, 6’4”, 188 lbs., G, So., 9,7 ppg; 3.3 rpg; 2.5 apg; 1.4 spg; Khalid Moore, 6’6”, 200 lbs., F, So., 4.2 ppg; Kristian Sjolund, 6’7”, 200 lbs., F, So., 3.0 ppg.

New Players: David Didenko, 6’8”, 230 lbs., PF, S0.; Asanti Price, 6’5”, 175 lbs., SG; Jordan Usher, 6’7”, 225 lbs., F, RS Jr., transfer from Southern Cal (eligible 2nd semester.)

8. MIAMI (last season: 5-13 ACC (tied for 11th place), 14-18 overall)

Jim Larranaga’s team was a disappointment last season as injury and ineligibility sank the Hurricanes to a losing record and no post-season play. Miami hopes that its returnees and newcomers can blend into a team that plays well together and stays healthy. The dynamic floor leader, Chris Lykes, is a good place to start as the junior returns with backcourt mate Dejan Vasiljevic to give the Canes one of the league’s better backcourts. Highly rated prospect Deng Gak returns inside after missing the bulk of last season with an injury. Oklahoma transfer Kameron McGusty is eligible this season as well, giving the team a huge boost on the wing. A couple of nice freshmen recruits, Harlond Beverly and Isaiah Wong give Miami good depth in the backcourt, while Florida grad transfer Keith Stone looks to make his mark on the inside. Miami should be able to make it back to the post season this year and is a threat to make the NCAA tourney.

Returning players: Kameron McGusty, 6’5”, 192 lbs., G, RS Jr., transfer from Oklahoma; Rodney Miller, 7’0”, 255 lbs., C, RS Jr., ; Dejan Vasiljevic, 6’3”, 184 lbs., SG, Sr., 11.8 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 36.7 3-pt.; Chris Lykes, 5’7”, 157 lbs., PG, Jr., 16.2 ppg, 3.2 apg, 1.3 spg, 31.8 % 3pt.; Sam Waardenburg, 6’10”, 216 lbs., Jr., 5.3 ppg, 3.5 rpg; Anthony Mack, 6’6”, 220 lbs., G, So., 2.6 ppg; Deng Gak, 6’10”, 211 lbs., redshirt So., 2.5 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 1,1 bpg in 8 games prior to injury; Nysier Brooks, 6’11”, 240 lbs., C, Sr. (transfer from Cincinnati seeking waiver).

New players: Isaiah Wong, 6’3”, 170 lbs., SG (Rivals #78); Anthony Walker, 6’9”, 210 lbs., PF; Harlond Beverly, 6’4”, 170 lbs., G (Rivals # 42); Keith Stone, 6’8”, 253 lbs., F (grad transfer from Florida, 6.1 ppg, 40.5% 3 pt.)

Departing players: Dewan Hernandez (formerly, “Huell”), declared for draft after being ruled ineligible to play by NCAA; Ebuka Izundu, 6’10”, 235 lbs., C, 10.9 ppg, 8.3 rpg, 1.2 bpg; Anthony Lawrence, II, 6’7”, 210 lbs., G/F, 12.6 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 3.1 apg, 34.7% 3-pt.; Zach Johnson, 6’2”, 195 lbs., G, 11.8 ppg, 2.4 apg, 1.7 spg;

7. NOTRE DAME (last season: 3-15 ACC (tied for 14th), 14-19 overall)

One has to question the strength and conditioning program at South Bend, Indiana given the number of injuries the Irish have suffered in recent years. Are the players buying into S&C? Is it simply not considered important to Mike Brey? Or is it the worst luck for the Irish since the potato famine of the 1840’s? Too many injuries have derailed Notre Dame the past 2 seasons and that looms as a huge question mark for this year’s talented group.

If the Irishmen stay healthy, they could find their way into the double-bye in the ACC tournament. Led by pre-season player-of-the-year candidate John Mooney, Notre Dame returns a very experienced group. Rex Pflueger returns after sitting out most of the season last year with an injury. The backcourt looks good with senior combo-guard T. J. Gibbs and surprising combo-guard Prentiss Hubb returning. Tall forward, Nate Laszewski, showed that he is a threat inside and out.

Notre Dame was last season’s biggest disappointment in the ACC, finishing in a tie for last. They could be this season’s biggest surprise, if healthy, but cannot afford major injuries once again to its star players.

Returning players: Rex Pflueger, 6’6”, 218 lbs, WG, RS Sr. (injured last season), 8.1 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 4.3 apg, 38.9% 3-pt. in 10 games; T. J. Gibbs, 6’3”, 185 lbs., PG, Sr., 13.4 ppg, 3.4 apg, 1.2 spg, 31.8% 3-pt.; Nikola Djogo, 6’7”, 222 lbs, WG, Sr., 2.7 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 31.0% 3-pt.; Juwan Durham, 6’11”, 223 lbs., PF/C, Sr., 5.7 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 2.3 bpg; John Mooney, 6’9”, 245 lbs, PF, Sr., 14.1 ppg, 11.2 rpg, 37.4% 3-pt.; Robby Carmody, 6’4”, 201 lbs., SG, RS freshman (injured last season), 3.7 ppg, in 9 games; Chris Doherty, 6’8”, 235 lbs., SF, So., 0.8 ppg; Dane Goodwin, 6’6”, 200 lbs., SG, So., 6.4 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 34.3% 3-pt.; Prentiss Hubb, 6’3”, 175 lbs., CG, So., 8.1 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 4.0 apg, 26.2% 2pt.; Nate Laszewski, 6’10”, 225 lbs., PF, So., 6.9 ppg, 3. rpg, 33.8% 3-pt.

New players: None

Departing players: D. J. Harvey, 6’6”, 220 lbs., SF, (transfer), 10.7 ppg, 4.2 rpg; Elijah Burns, 6’8”, 235 lbs., PF, transfer mid-season, 5.3 ppg, 3.8 rpg.

6. FLORIDA STATE (last season: 13-5 ACC (4th place), 29-8 overall)

The Seminoles lose 6 players from their regular rotation which might spell doom for most programs, but Leonard Hamilton had the league’s largest rotation last year and returns 5 players that saw significant action on last season’s excellent Florida State squad. Trent Forrest and M. J. Walker return in the backcourt to give Hamilton’s squad a duo that can play with anyone in the league. 3 sophomores, Gray, Polite and Vassell, received a healthy dose of playing time and could blossom this year. Gray is a particularly interesting player: built like Zion Williamson, he has the ability to step outside and knock down the long ball as well as score inside. Some nice recruits, led by small forward Patrick Williams, will allow Hamilton to rebuild his depth and keep a large rotation of fresh, athletic players pressuring all game long on the defensive side of the ball. While there should be some dropoff from last season, the Noles should challenge again for the top half of the conference and a NCAA bid.

Returning players: Trent Forrest, 6’4”, 210 lbs., Sr., G, 9.3 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 3.7 apg, 1.9 spg; Malik Osborne, 6’9”, 215 lbs., So., F (transfer from Rice); M.J. Walker, 6’5”, 213 lbs., Jr., G, 7.5 ppg; Wyatt Wilkes, 6’8”, 220 lbs., Jr., G/F, 1.5 ppg; RaiQuan Gray, 6’8”, 260 lbs., So., F, 3.9 ppg; Anthony Polite, 6’6”, 215 lbs., So., G, 2.7 ppg; Devin Vassell, 6’5”, 170 lbs., So., G/F, 4.5 ppg;

New players: Patrick Williams, SF (Rivals #20); Balsa Koprivica, 7’0”, C (Rivals #88); Naheem McCloud, C; Zimife Nwokeji, 6’7”, 180, SF/PF; Nathanael Jack, SF, JUCO transfer; Dominik Olejniczak, 7’0”, 255 lbs. C (transfer from Ole Miss, 5.3 ppg 3.0 rpg.)

F, 7.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg; Christ Koumadje, 7’4”, 268 C, 6.6 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 1.4 bpg; Terance Mann, 6’7”, 215 lbs. G/F, 11.4 ppg, 6.5 rpg; David Nichols, 6’0”, 185 lbs. G, 6.4 ppg; PJ Savoy, 6’4”, 210 lbs. G, 5.9 ppg.
