Virginia defeated Alabama State by 35 points, 85-50. Four players scored double figures led by Johnson's 22 points. Virginia outrebounded the opposition 48 to 34. The Cavs had 15 steals on defense and held State to 19 points in the first half. At first glance, it would appear that Virginia had little reason for concern, but there was a little devil in the details.
Virginia was 18 of 27 in foul shooting and made only 49.2% of their field goal attempts. The team had 19 assists but 20 turnovers. They allowed as many points in the third quarter as State scored in the first half. These stats will give the coaches some things to work on before the team faces ACC competition.
