Apologies for not having game-by-game recaps this weekend, but I know that's been handled elsewhere on the board. UVA is now 11-0 after sweeping the Nittany Lions, capped by today's 13-1 win. A few notes from the weekend and the first 11 games of the season:

  • UVA has now outscored its opponents by a combined score of 135-21. The Hoos have scored more runs in the second inning (25) or fifth inning (39) of their first 11 games than the pitching staff has allowed all season.
  • Opposing starters are a combined 0-10 with an 11.36 ERA this season. Only one has lasted five full innings against UVA.
  • UVA starters have combined for a 1.52 ERA.
  • The pitching staff has given up just 31 walks in 99 innings pitched. They've struck out 144.
  • The Wahoos have committed just four errors through three weekends, none in this three-game series against Penn State.
  • Griff O'Ferrall in the three games against Penn State: 6-for-11 with four RBI and eight runs scored, plus one walk in each game. That's capped by a 4-for-4 day on Sunday, with three runs scored and two RBI. O'Ferrall has reached base in all 11 games to start the season.
  • Led by O'Ferrall, 11 of UVA's 15 hits on Sunday came from freshmen. Colin Tuft and Ethan Anderson each went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. With a pinch-hit single in the eighth, Casey Saucke extended his hitting streak to the first nine games of his college career. During one stretch in the eighth, Tuft-Anderson-Saucke-O'Ferrall all singled in consecutive at-bats, with Saucke and O'Ferrall driving in runs.
  • The Hoos put six on the board in that eighth inning. They've had at least one inning of five or more runs in each of the eight games on this homestand. They've also scored at least 10 runs in each of these eight games, the longest such stretch in program history.
  • Jake Gelof had his second two-homer game of the season on Sunday, a two-run shot in the first and a three-run bomb in the eighth that cleared the left field bleachers and flew an estimated 414 feet. Gelof now has seven homers and 29 RBI on the season. Last year, UVA didn't have a player hit his seventh home run until the first weekend in May; no one hit more than five home runs on the year during the 2018 or 2019 seasons.
  • Despite his 2-for-5 day at the plate, Gelof's batting average 'dropped' to .472. His season slugging percentage: 1.278.
  • Like O'Ferrall, Devin Ortiz has reached base in all 11 games to start the year. Kyle Teel's streak ended at 10 straight to start the year (and 38 straight, going back to last year) today. Prior to yesterday, Gelof had reached base in each of the first nine games.
  • According to the managers' radar gun, Jay Woolfolk's fastball topped out at 99 mph today. He recorded both of his strikeouts on 97 mph fastballs.
  • This is the first UVA team to start 11-0 since the 2013 won its first 14. Other Oak teams to open with at least 11 straight wins: 2008 (11-0), 2009 (19-0, the best start and longest winning streak in program history).
