This isn't the saying his hire may not work. I applaud the school for bringing in a coach with his background, but at the end of the day all hires are created equal and as much as we are excited there are some warning signs.
Staff- as much as his staff has stayed loyal and they seem to bond very well, guys always think the grass is greener elsewhere. Does Bronco have the connections in the football community to replace staff if it came to that?
Recruiting- this might be the biggest one for me. Data shows us that he could do a lot better than his situation at BYU, but his style isn't for everyone. Can we get that four-star and occasional five star to buy into his very workman-like coaching style? As boring as Tech football is in my view or was, remember them getting Kevin Jones or Cor Brown? Those were game changers at the time. Around Year 4, 5, 6, that type of player will need to be considering us. I know the staff is going to develop players very well, but can they develop them at the speed they're at now without kids going on Mormon missions? I think the first two off seasons we may see some attrition from guys who can't cut the Bronco way.
Tougher schudule- I know at BYU they played and beat some quality opponents, but in the ACC you will now have to play Miami, UNC, Tech, Clemson, FSU, Louisville, ND. Some of those teams obviously won't be every year, but the fact of the matter is for us to become a perennial top 25 team again we're going to have to be able to field a team that can compete and sometimes beat Florida State, Clemson, Tech.
Tech game- obviously the last two coaches had no clue. One win from Groh and London seriously makes me want to consider being a full blown alcoholic. For most kids high school age Tech is the supreme team. We have to at least start beating them at home to change the narrative. They start beating us here year in year out under him, we are in trouble.
QB development- I feel pretty good about this from everything I've read, and at the end of the day this is the most important reason why I feel super confident about the hire, but can they do it in this conference or bring in a top-flight QB that doesn't get worse under their tutelage?
Fixing the London mess- God bless him for even taking the job under very messy circumstances. I have no clue on how to deal with these numbers year in and year out. Guys obviously will get hurt and that will end careers or some may leave. Can the staff continue to manage numbers when those things happen?
Can Bronco work the ball in the ACC- yes we will be a spread offense team trying to control tempo, but will that power game they also like to implement work? Obviously that comes down to quarterback development and OL management and growth, but the speed in this league will be a little different week to week. When they might have had 1 tough game out of 3 at BYU, you might get a schedule at Virginia where you play quality opponents three weeks in a row. Does that still work or will the teams at the top still be too superior? If that style of play isn't working, can we adjust or do they stay very particular to their system?
I have had coaches from pretty big D1 schools tell me they aren't sure about the hire because Bronco did have certain things that could go his way not playing in a conference and with older players. I am more than excited for the possibilities of getting back to the Welsh days, but at same time there is some reserve as well because change is not always good. But I can't wait for the start of football season. Go Hoos.
