I was musing today about what the Virginia roster would look like next year and especially who was likely to get serious playing time. I looked at the current roster to see who would likely to be on the team next year and noted 25 players were grad students and 13 of these were usually on our two deep. Another 17 were seniors with 6 on the two deep. Very few of our freshmen and sophomores (or first and second years for purists) got much time on the field. There is no way of knowing how many on the roster will enter the transfer portal.
I then looked at our commitments. We have just 1 4* arriving, and the vast majority were wide receivers, defensive backs, and athletes. We will be woefully short of linemen will have to rely on players on the incoming transfer list to fill holes on the lines. History has indicated that many of the players that we have added from the transfer portal were not happy with the playing time that they had at their previous school. In addition, talented players are likely to be told that our coaches are on a short leash. This will be another hurdle for our staff to overcome.
After considering all of this, I felt more than a little discouraged.
