It was recently announced that Clark was not on the roster of the 2024 team. There was a list of excuses for her omission. The primary reason given was that Clark's many fans would be upset when she had little playing time. It apparently was not obvious that her fans would be more upset if she could not play at all.
The second excuse that I heard was that rookies never are on the Olympic roster. In reality, several newcomers to the NBA and WNBA have played on the Olympic team, and none of them had either the records or the following of Clark.
The third excuse was that Clark had not participated in the 2023 or 2024 Olympic tryouts. The trials were held at the same time as the NCAA basketball tournaments when Clark was occupied with her Iowa team. Two of the women who were selected have missed all of or the majority of the 2024 WNBA season.
All of those offering excuses fail to admit that Clark's participation in games has put butts in the seats and added many additional viewers to all televised games in which she plays. The ultimate goal of every business should be to make a profit and continue to grow. The WNBA has never accomplished the first of these and has been erratic in the second until this year. The failure to include Clark on the team will almost certainly diminish the odds of achieving either.
