Had a big photo spread and the back story on why RJ Hampton who had a 3.75 GPA and 1280 SAT score decided to forgo his senior year of high school, reclassify, then go overseas to play for New Zealand Breakers in the National League of Australia and New Zealand (9 pro teams).
His stats were 32 points a game, 9.7 rebounds and 6.4 assist in 2018-2019 as a Junior in High school. His college choices were Texas Tech, Kansas, or Memphis before he shocked them with the overseas decision.
He was quoted as saying he was looking forward to not having "to Juggle books and Basketball" and instead focusing just on his NBA preparation.
It was also noted in this piece, that Brian Bowen, a former Louisville signee who was a central figure in the NCAA's men's basketball corruption scandal, played last season for the Sydney Kings (same Team the late Chris Williams of UVA played for) and is projected to be a 2019 second round pick by several sites.
The so call experts are now saying this could spark a trend for elite recruits aiming to profit during the mandated one year separation between high school and NBA draft.
Looks like it could be One and Done for foreign overseas play for the elite trying to get paid and prepare for the NBA draft, instead of having to go to classes during the one year separation rule.
Side note: talked to two friends ( a married couple) I worked with up a Customs at the International Airport that live in Little Elm and the wife (from India) had two twins (son and daughter) that graduated last year and know RJ Hampton and she told me that her kids said he was good kid academically and she said she was surprised when he decided not to go the college route given his GPA, and SAT scores. Her rationale was he was not just coasting in academics, but she understood his future would be in the NBA or playing somewhere.
