You trade the true freshman year for a redshirt freshman year
You trade the true sophomore year for a redshirt sophomore year
You trade the true junior year for a redshirt junior year
You trade the true senior year for a redshirt senior year

I really hope seeing it like this clears it up for the ones confused by the concept. You do not trade a 5th year redshirt year for a true freshman year. By the time a recruit gets to his 4th year (each year, actually) of eligibility, the difference should be marginal, at best and each case is different. Really wish the few of you would let go of this fallacy argument and let the man coach his team. And no, I don't think he should have burnt all three RB shirts already but that is a different conversation. We just don't have the depth necessary to shirt a bunch of players...that comes later. If he needs a few warm bodies to play 25 snaps on kick coverage so be it. Maybe later we will find out that he was totally wrong but to go hysterical at every sighting of a burnt shirt is premature and ludicrous.

That's all.
