Coach Mox Interview

Jeff interviewed Mox on this week’s Wahoo Central podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/wahoo-central-podcast/id749082889
Three players are recovering/rehabbing but should be back and healthy. I also didn’t realize they let go of the strength coach midway through the season. Lots of talk about how the new strength coach/program should help them stay healthier this year. Very exciting to hear her go through player by player and explain how they all fit together. Going to be an exciting year.

2023 College Football Team Transfer Portal Rankings

UVA is ranked #57. Per the site – “On3's Team Transfer Portal Index utilizes the On3 (P)erformance score to measure a team’s production during the transfer process, compared relative against its roster and not a comparison against other schools. This proprietary algorithm determines if a school has improved its overall team talent, stayed the same, or declined in talent during the transfer window.”. Looks like it’s some combination of the high school recruiting stars that you had and the net change based on transfers. The change in NIL value is also included in the table. Not sure if that factors or not.

The Athletic: What’s next for Virginia? Tony Bennett’s plan after tournament upset, transfers

This paywalled but worth a read if you can access it.
What’s next for Virginia? Tony Bennett’s plan after tournament upset, transfers
Here’s the take-home at the end.

That is one of many ways in which the new world order will challenge this perennially old-school program. There is a stubbornness here, an unwillingness to to be moved, that is either admirable or foolhardy or both. Virginia will flex tactically; Bennett has experimented with different offensive systems several times in the last decade, including when Virginia won its national title, and he played a radical five-out system with Huff, Hauser and Murphy in the frontcourt in 2021. It will get marginally more money into the NIL pot. But the foundational strategic vision, the core values, are not subject to alteration.
If that means losing a talented redshirt from a gutted roster before the kid ever plays a minute for his team, well, so be it. Fellow coaches admire this devotion; they also attempt to use it to their advantage.

What’s left in ‘22-‘23

With Men’s Lacrosse done and Rowing finishing 10th we’re approaching the finish line for this year.
Men’s Golf wraps up tomorrow with UVA in 10th place and first year Ben James in 8th overall, seven shots back.
Men’s Track is sending Ethan Dabbs (Javelin), Nate Mountain (3000 SC), Derek Johnson (3000 SC), Conor Murphy (800 meters), and Owayne Owens (Triple Jump) to the Championships.
The Women are sending Sophie Atkinson (10,000 meters), Ashley Anumba (discuss), Alix Still (heptathlon), and Margot Appleton (1500 meters).
And Baseball will be hosting a regional. Details on the field will be released tomorrow.
I think that’s all that’s left for this year.
