Is it just me? (Bracketology Edition)

I can never remember a year where a 1-seed is so indistinguishable from a 3-seed this late.

Nova's having a nice season, but do you really see a lot of difference between them and Miami, currently projected a 3? The top 11 really seem like a pick'em to me. The drop off really doesn't happen until that last 3-seed and into the 4s (Oregon seems a slight step down, as do teams like KY, Dayton and Iowa State ... TAMU another step down from that and frankly I would seed TX and Notre Dame over them with Duke/TAMU a very close call).

I know, I know, the next four weeks teams will distinguish themselves a bit more. Or not. But I would hate to be the committee if the season were to end today (or if the top of the Big XII, ACC, and B1G stay so jumbled until the end).

CavsCorner Video: Perrantes and Wilkins talk NC State win

Following No. 7 UVa's 73-53 win over NC State on Monday night, junior guard London Perrantes (19 points, including five 3-pointers, and 5 assists) and sophomore forward Isaiah Wilkins (6 points, 3 assists, and a career-high 13 rebounds) talked about leaving the Duke game in the past, getting the win over the Pack, how they were so dominant in the second half, and much more.

Game still on?

Per the UVA webpage the game is still on and the ACC controls - if the teams and the refs get there, screw the fans - they play! They do not care about fans' safety, fans that have to travel hours through snow and ice or can't get there because of it. All for the almighty ESPN dollar.

Rotations

Please don't hate me, nor am I worthy of holding Tony's jock, but we are still substituting crazily.

Duke played old style Duke style Duke d. They picked us up half court. Despite this,TB played a 10 man rotation.

We got killed via Allen and others taking it to the glass.

The only players we have capable of creating of the bounce are Brogdon and Shayock.

Why did Shayock not get more burn, given the way he played. What were Thompsom and Hall doing on the floor at the same time?

Shayock looks healthy now and should have gotten more run. Hall has proven to make poor decisions off the bounce, yet got more minutes. Shayock has finally earned his starting role back and given the way the game was officiated and should of played more and taken more fouls.

Just my observation, and damn proud to have Bennett as our coach!

The Big Lesson from Yesterday - We need to be Tougher

One thing I have loved about CTB's teams over the last few years has been our toughness. We grind out games, make big shots and rarely make a bonehead play late. Putting aside the absolutely inexplicable losses to FSU and GT, we have been extremely tough even when we lose. MB made what should have been the winning shots late against Ville and Duke; we nearly overcame a big deficit late against Tech and Joe hit a huge 3 late against MSU.

Even with this toughness, we need more of it, because if we are going to take the next step, we need to beat the best of the best such as Duke and MSU. While we played an excellent game against Duke, a few things were lacking.

First, we need Gill to step up even more. Gill got an early foul against Plumlee, but never really attacked him again in the first half when a second foul on Plumlee would have been devastating to Duke. Also, when we were up 11, he had the ball right at the rim, but a surprising weak (for him) move led to miss and then a quick Duke 3 that killed our momentum and prevented us from holding a solid lead at half. In big moments, we need Gill to play big. You may not get a second chance to deal an early blow to a team like Duke or MSU, and you cannot blow it with a weak move.

Second, our role players need to step it up. MS was great yesterday, and he needs to receive credit for shutting down Allen on the last play. By beating Allen to the spot, he forced Allen to shuffle his feet, and then he out-toughed Allen in the air and did not allow Allen to release the shot until his foot landed. The fact that the officials did not make the call should not take away from MS's great play. While MS played great, and MT had a great spurt, others did not step up. IW has unique talents on this team, and he absolutely cannot get into foul trouble when his services are needed. DH needs to shoot with more confidence. He had two wide open 3s in the first half and missed them both badly. These guys need to step it up down the stretch.

CTB is learning fast as a coach, and the slow starts that plaqued us late last year, and earlier this year are gone, but when everything is on the line, he cannot allow the other team's best player have a one on one opportunity against someone who is not Brogdon. On the final play, I would loved to see him instruct the team to double GA on a Duke screen thus forcing someone else to take the last shot. Also, for the final play, I would have loved him to switch MB onto GA, knowing that Duke was going to GA give the last shot.

Bottom line, this team is poised for a big run, and there will be at least one moment of truth, and this team, and not just MB, must be ready to seize the moment.

Time to move on to NC State.....

The quick turnaround is a great thing in this situation. I expect this team will bounce back at home vs State. You simply can not allow one team to beat you twice, tomorrow night will tell us a lot. Lost in the shuffle was another very solid defensive performance @ Duke, curious who draws the Barber assignment tomorrow? Not sure if Brogdon can keep him in front, almost would be tempted to start with LP and allow Thompson a chance on him as well. That allows Brogdon to take Rowan out of the game.

One Thing I Am Proud Of

Yesterday was a tough loss and an especially tough way to lose a big game. I am proud of how Tony Bennett and our team, but especially Coach Bennett, handled the final play. Contrast Bennett's reaction with Coach K's reaction at the end of the Syracuse game. Coach K declined to shake hands with some SU players as he focused his anger on the exiting officials. In the post game presser he repeatedly called the couple of no calls "amazing", as in terrible. He was incensed and his anger was on display for all to see. He made no positive mention of Syracuse in the presser.

Tony Bennett, on the other hand, shook his head and then went and shook hands. He did not denigrate the officials or express any anger. He praised Duke, commenting on what a difficult matchup Ingram and Allen were. He displayed grace under trying circumstances. He exhibited class. Kudos to our head coach!

UVA climbs to #2 in KenPom - Duke analysis

UVA was sitting at #3 earlier this week, but has climbed to #2 based on results through Friday night (Feb 12). Villanova occupies the top spot. Duke checks in at #12. Virginia has the #11 offense and #10 defense with the defensive stats having improved greatly in our last four games. Duke checks in with the #2 offense and the #121 defense (yes, 121st!). In a nutshell, Duke can score, but they can't defend. Duke's 3-point shooting and UVA's ability to defend against it will be the key to this game. Both teams can score, but UVA can defend, albeit we struggle with the deep ball. Had the game been at a neutral court or at JPJ, I would guarantee the victory, but at Cameron there are many other factors. However, we are a team with senior leadership that does not get frazzled on the road (our earlier losses were just that we played poorly), and I think we will feed off the energy tonight. There are two monkeys we need to get off our back: 1) losing at Cameron, and 2) losing to Michigan State. Let's eliminate the first one tonight!

I hate to say it, but at the end of the day we have to move on :(

Trust me I was in no mood to watch after losing a 2 OT game my kids should have won at the FT line in regulation, but when I finally got home and viewed the clip at least 20 times I know it looks like he took three steps but the fact that he had that 1 foot down kind of makes the case for them not calling the travel and even if it was we really expect the refs to call that at Duke? One of my players let me know we were up one with eight seconds to go and the first thing that went through my head without watching was we can't let Allen have the last shot. The other team's best player cannot take the last shot. It would be the same if it was Malcolm for us. We lost by 1 at Duke in a place most UVA teams get buried.

Postgame presser: No. 7 UVa 62, Duke 63

Asked about the last play, Tony Bennett said he thought that Marial Shayok did a great job on it. He said he joked to Coach K after the game that he thought he walked and K joked he thought Allen was fouled. "That stings," Bennett said, noting that he also gave thanks. They showed some guts in a hard-fought game in a tough environment. He also said that they had to adjust to Brandon Ingram and then they played well in spots.

On rebounding in the second half, matching up with Ingram hurt in a lot of ways but he thought Malcolm Brogdon did a great job on him. The team got a little "wobbly" in the second half offensively. He thought they had enough good looks to win it but ultimately they didn't.
