Kansa and Selfie

Never been a big Self fan, but after sleeping through the first half against a weaker team, the Jayhawks sure hit the open man, sometimes 3-4 times in a possession and they ended up winning going away at home. I was very impressed with that team. We would match up well with them though.

FWIW, the 3 tiers of the ACC according to early Kenpom ranks

There are 5 ACC teams ranked in the top 12. This doesn't include UNC's loss today, but they were 9, so I don't expect them to drop further than 15 or so.

1. UVA
4. Duke
9. Carolina
10. Louisville
12. Miami

The second tier are all ranked between 24-53.

24. Notre Dame
27. Pitt
33. Fla St.
36. Syracuse
53. Clemson

Everybody else is way down the list.

I know that things will change as the season goes on, but these tiers are pretty close to my expectations. Maybe NC St in the 2nd tier, Clemson in the 3rd tier, etc., but I mostly agree. Overall, the ACC is have a pretty good OOC season. It just drives me absolutely crazy that we couldn't beat the Big 10 this year.

Interesting rumor...

So, credit HooDaves for mentioning this to me earlier and getting my mind focused on it but Ruffin McNeil and Robert Anae worked together at Texas Tech. So, could they work together again?

As we now know, UVa has most of its defensive slots filled but still needs a defensive line coach and (depending on how Bronco assigns Kelly Poppinga) a linebacker's coach too perhaps. Well, per this story from October, McNeil and Anae are pretty tight given their backgrounds. I'll add that as of yet, I have no sources chiming in. This is just good ole speculation and rumor.

Will be interesting to see if McNeil joins UVa's staff because it would be an intriguing match...

Video: Blanding expects UVa's defense to have fun again

In the wake of the news that Bronco Mendenhall would be UVa's next head coach, All-American safety Quin Blanding said he thinks its a move that not only excites the community but also will bring a lot of fun to the Cavalier defense.

In this video interview, Blanding talks about his memories of playing BYU, what he sees in Mendenhall's defensive scheme, the energy he thinks the new coach will bring, and how much he's looking forward to sitting down and talking football with his new head coach.

Does anyone still doubt that Perrantes is the MVP of this team?

Malcolm is the best player, but Perrantes makes our team work. When he's running the offense, our shot selection is better, we play with a higher rate of efficiency and most importantly, we control the tempo.

I normally don't get this fired up about an individual subplot of the team, but it's just SOOOO apparent to me that the difference between us being a 2nd tier ACC team and a legitimate national championship contender is LA Swag.

I really hope that CTB looks to recruit similar "pass first" point guards in the next few classes.

Grant opening up his recruitment

Per Taft Coghill of the Free Lance-Star, Courtland head coach J.C. Hall says three-star ATH Nick Grant hasn't heard from UVa since the hiring of Bronco Mendenhall and is therefore opening things up because he "doesn't want to get behind the 8-ball." I reached out to Grant the night of the announcement and never heard anything back, which makes sense. We'll have to see how this one plays out.

CavsCorner Video: Taquan Mizzell

When standout junior running back Taquan Mizzell got a chance to hear from new UVa coach Bronco Mendenhall, it was like music to his ears.

In this video interview, he talks about his and his teammates reaction when they heard the news about Mendenhall's hiring, about what he thinks of his new coach, about the importance of working hard and being ready, why he thinks Mendenhall fits what the Cavaliers need and why he said, "I'm fired up to see what's next."
