OT - To get myself more prepared for the VT game today,

I decided to watch our 2019 NCAA quarterfinal, semifinal, and final games. There were several common denominators in the games. We would go up against three of the better college players - Edwards for Purdue, Harper for Auburn, and Culver for Texas Tech. Edwards had one of the very best shooting games I have ever seen, but at the end of the game when Purdue had a chance to win the game, he threw a pass out of bounds. Harper had made 19 free throws in a row, but at the end of the game, he missed one that might have sealed the win for Auburn. Culver had been hitting shots well in the second half, but when he had a shot to win the game, it was blocked by Key.
On the other hand, against Purdue, Virginia was down 3 with just a few seconds left when we made "the play" when Diakite hit the missed second free throw into the back court, Clark ran it down and threw a perfect pass back to Diakite. who swished a jump shot to send the game into overtime. Against Auburn we were down 2 when Guy was fouled with just a couple of seconds left; Guy calmly swished all three free throws to get the win. Against Tech, Hunter made a couple of crucial corner 3s to lead the Hoos to the final game win. We might need similar heroics in the game in the barn today.

Which would you rather see?

  • UNC miss a double bye

  • Duke miss a bye

Currently UNC is in 4th in the ACC. A loss away from dropping a notch and missing a double bye. Duke is currently in 7th and quite close to missing a bye. There's a lot of basketball left to play but I'm wondering which you would rather see - UNC miss a double bye or Duke miss a bye?

Squash Teams

The men's and women's squash teams are getting a lot of coverage and videos on VirginiaSports.com. From that, I assume they are officially sponsored by the Athletic Dept. including scholarships, travel and other expenses. Is this money coming from VAF donations? The NCAA does not sanction squash, even though they sanction every other minor sport in which only a few teams compete. That is how teams like Stanford rack up all their points in the Learfield Cup. So are the squash teams just club teams? I am just confused about their official standing and justification since the NCAA does not recognize the teams?

OT: Josh Pastner

With the Louisville win tonight they are now tied for last with GT. One win each! It's gotta' be Pastner's last year there, right? Someone like Tony Elliott has nowhere to go but up (well...I guess he could go sideways - but let's hope not!). Pastner peaked early and basically has ridden his career steadily downhill.

One of my brothers called me and told me he was suppose to go with Kymora's dad and granddad and watch her play but came down with Covid.

Got a call from one of my brothers and he had told me that Kymora's dad and granddad texted him and they were suppose to go together to see her play, but my brother came down with Covid.

I asked him how he knew them ( I was in the military overseas when was 9) and he said he's known her Granddad since her grandfather was 12 and they both played on leagues together and her dad also he's been friends and been playing with him in games for over 10 years.

Looking forward to seeing Kymora (5*) and 4* Olivia McGhee, another VA girl next season. Coach Mox is making some in roads in UVA Basketball!

update: took out names for their security.

ACC gives its football teams new guidance on scheduling non-Power 5 road games: Don’t

Hmmm, interesting implications to this...ACC gives its football teams new guidance on scheduling non-Power 5 road games: Don’t
Coming off a year in which the ACC played 10 road games at non-Power 5 opponents — and lost three of them — schools received new guidance from the league office: Don’t.
While the nonconference portions of the schedules to be released Monday are often set years if not decades in advance, the ACC has asked schools to schedule most, if not all, of their future nonconference road games at either Power 5 teams or Army.
That sounds simple enough, except it can cost anywhere from $500,000 to $1 million to buy a home game against even a low-level FBS team, and playing home-and-homes or two-for-ones are often the best balance between finances and, to be blunt, wins.
Throw in geographic considerations where going on the road makes sense for recruiting reasons or otherwise — Appalachian State and Charlotte and East Carolina for the North Carolina schools, Liberty and Old Dominion for the Virginia schools — and it’s a tough nut to crack.
“It’s potentially more expensive,” North Carolina athletic director Bubba Cunningham said, “but theoretically you can build more competitive, better schedules.”
That’s why ACC commissioner Jim Phillips made that ask, although creating better inventory for the ACC Network and the league’s partners at ESPN was certainly a consideration, as well.
“Those end up being individual campus decisions, but we have pushed hard about making sure when we have opportunities to play really good programs and teams in the nonconference, we need to do that,” Phillips said. “We just do. When you look at some of our better teams over the last three or four years, in particular a school like Clemson, that’s what they’ve done. And you have to do that.
“It doesn’t mean all 12 of your games have to be at that level, but when you have the opportunity to play home games or home-and-homes, they need to be against the very best competition you can.”

UVA girls vs VT girls

We continue to make the same mistakes down the stretch that doom the outcome. The first of the year we played unselfish, team ball that made us a winner. Now we have players that just make selfish mistakes that has cost the girls team in the 4th the last half dozen games.

Just trying to be honest about how things played out, but Smith decided to continue to drive being heavily guard to the rack and throw up non-makeable shots high off the glass. I think she was 1-8 at one point.

Valladay has issues with awareness and doesn't know when to pull up and has had several balls stolen from her from behind.

We still have players that can't hold on to a simple loose ball coming off the rim and lose it off their hands; turning it back over for VT to hit a 3pt shot.

Clarkson was good at bodying up on offense against 6'6" Kitley, but she and several girls continue to travel with the ball even out in open court for no reason.

Taylor tends to get still in foul trouble and she gets her points, but she also turns over the ball in crunch moments.

Brunelle simply was a ghost in this game with only one floor shot and 4 free throws. She didn't get the ball in any shooting opportunities when Smith, Vaughn and Lawson were trying to drive in just to turn it over or throw up a complete brick shot.

This team has potential and losing Mir hurt us, but to be honest Brunelle, Clarkson, Lawson, and others have to get in a gym and get into playing shape and build strength.

VT girls were running up and down the court, even their heavy players in 4th, 5th gear and even our fastest players couldn't stay up with them. Our bigger girls were extremely slow both getting over or on fast breaks. VT girls just blew right by for easy layups.

Again, we have potential, if we could get in better shape, go back to playing selfless team ball instead of players winding up at the top, over and over to throw up a complete brick for a layup that you can see on their release it with way too much velocity on the ball when it hits the backboard and doesn't even hit the rim.

We tend to make great runs in the 3rd Quarter to completely fall apart or go dysfunctional in the 4th. You can see the frustration in Coach Mox on the sidelines/bench.

You know eventually with two top players coming next year she will get this program on track in the near future!

Lastly, one thing the top girls teams have we don't is that 6'4", 6'5", 6'6" player that can score under the basket and get rebounds. We simply don't have any of our big 3 at 6'2" only, that can get off the floor or defensively keep them from scoring easy turn arounds one on one.

Bennett vs Elliott

Anybody else remember when TB first got got here and we lost our best player ( Landesburg ) and then had our prize recruit KT Harrell leave?

Makes me think of Armstrong leaving and the OLine guys transferring.

Now I’m not saying TE is going to be anywhere near TB, BUT there are similarities. I really get the same vibes with TE that I did with TB. What are my fellow board members thoughts??
