Conversation with Sonny Randle

I am sure that name brings up some no so fond memories since his two teams went 5-17 before he went on to Marshall. He was in Charlottesville, heard him talking, being less than favorable about the teams' chances. He said they will start 0-2. I thought he could have kept that to himself, that saying they will be challenged to have a good season is fine. Statistically speaking on paper yes Mr. Randle 0-2 is a strong possibility but at this point with camp just getting started they are undefeated so I will lean toward old school optimism.

Latest news on 2016 baseball commits

Felitti, a LHP, has decommitted. He stated that he and his family have thought it over and decided that UVA was not the best choice for him. He is reportedly considering Maryland and JMU. There is no way of knowing, but I would imagine that he was offered more money and/or assurance of more immediate playing time. The good news is that Nolan Jones is making a big impression on folks at the Area Code tournament in Long Beach, CA. In a recent game, he had 3 hits and a stolen base and made several nice fielding plays at 3B.

Heads up: Media day tomorrow

Prior to the final practice of fall training camp that we're allowed to watch, UVa will be holding its annual media day tomorrow in John Paul Jones Arena.

My plan (as in years past) is to cover it from start to finish. Here's the schedule:

11:05 a.m.: Head coach Mike London
11:30: Break for lunch
11:50: Offensive coordinator Steve Fairchild
12:10 p.m.: Defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta
12:30: Special teams coordinator Larry Lewis
12:40- 2 p.m.: Player roundtables

The players we're expecting to interview include Quin Blanding, Zach Bradshaw, Ross Burbank, David Dean, Ian Frye, Daniel Hamm, Matt Johns, Micah Kiser, Taquan Mizzell, Mike Moore, Kelvin Rainey, and Canaan Severin.

I'll start a media day thread tomorrow morning before I head for Charlottesville and do live updates from London's session as well as all three coordinators in that thread. I'll grab audio of some of the player sessions for content items we'll roll out over the next couple of weeks.

I'm also thinking I'll start a practice thread tomorrow much like I did today so people can ask questions and sort of have me watch for things they want to see.

Thanks.

Eli Harold

With Smith gone from the Niners he should be able to get his shot more quickly with that team now. I told a buddy of mine when he was drafted he was going to be a stud in a year or two, now he'll just have to show people what I was talking about more quickly

Name a UVA basketball who you had such high expectations for and they didn't live to the hype

Willie Dersch

I remember reading about this kid in high school right around the time of our Elite Eight run about his shooting ability. Back then it was very rare to be able to catch people on TV and I just read about this kid and every magazine that I had was hyping him up as a player that would take us to the next level.

Elton Brown

Because he was from right around where I live I was rooting for him to do special things especially being able to play behind Watson, but a lot of things my old high school coach told me about his immaturity came into play while he was at UVA. I do admire him now for attempting to slim down going into his SR year, but whether there were multiple things going on with him or lack of coaching development at the time he never lived up to my personal expectations.

Who takes DA's 24 minutes per game this year?

It seems to me his defense is going to be tough to replace. If Tobey can finally get his act together, he could take 5 of those minutes, but he is not DA defensively. Maybe Salt and Reuter could each take 5 minutes. They seem to be the new bruise brothers. And is Wilkins ready for 10 - 15 additional minutes playing that level of defense? Will Gill have to rotate over occasionally?

UNCheat at it again!

DB Malik Simmons gets popped for Possession of marijuana and resisting arrest - they suspend him for all of two games. Whoopee! Wonder what the punishment would have been at Va Tech? Probably sits the 1st quarter of game 1, and an award of 4.0 hours of extra academic credits. At UVA he gets the death penalty. I just do not get UNC at all.

Fall practice No. 2

I'll be on the road shortly for Charlottesville, where the second practice of fall training camp will get going at 3 p.m.

Just as a refresher (since some of you missed the thread from the other day about the plan for coverage! haha): Practice runs about two hours. Once the team breaks, we get to grab players for interviews so that'll take another half hour or so.

I'll post our practice report shortly thereafter. As I mentioned in the other thread, even though we're not allowed to post "live" updates, they are letting us use electronic devices this year for note. So, I'm going to do a "running" report on my iPhone during practice so that I can post the full thing once it's over rather than waiting to get back to a computer. You've all been warned, though, so no "hey look at this typo!" jokes, thanks.

Check in later this afternoon.

DAVID CUTCLIFFE

Since Duke's football program under Coach Cutcliffe seems to get mentioned as the benchmark for where UVA should be, I decided to look up Coach Cutcliffe and what he has done at Duke thus far. From 2008 when he took over as head coach, his records have been: 4-8, 5-7, 3-9, 3-9, 6-7, 10-4, and 9-4. The team was rated as having a weak strength of schedule in 2 of his losing seasons and in 2014, his first bowl season at Duke. Maybe there is hope for us yet. If Cutcliffe wasn't genius enough to put it all together until his weakest schedule in 2014, perhaps we can turn it around as well. Duke's turnaround clearly started on offense, our weakness throughout Coach London's tenure. At least Duke's rise says it can be done. The question becomes, can we turn things around with Coach Fairchild running the offense? Up until now, the answer has been pretty clear.
