WAR ROOM-- 7.24.15

The WAR ROOM is back and this edition is full of hoops recruiting scoop! With the final evaluation period of the summer underway, we'll tell you where the coaches are recruiting and tell you what the plan was coming out of the second week. We'll fill you in on what the board now looks like at wing, where the Cavaliers continue to pair down the list of prospects and it seems like two or three have emerged as the ones to watch. And of course, we'll touch on the recruitment of a certain former five-star who is looking to transfer and UVa is considered the heavy favorite. So what's the plan there? We'll give you all of that and more.

As always, what's said in the War Room, stays in the War Room. Let's go!

Final live period rolls on

For the last time in a War Room this summer, we'll start once again this week with logistics, as Tony Bennett and his assistant coaches are out on the road during the final evaluation period of July. Bennett as well as Brad Soderberg and Ron Sanchez are all in Las Vegas pretty much for the duration this week. Whereas the other two live periods included a host of events nationwide, the third sort of focuses a lot of the action in Vegas and that's where the staff is spending most of its time.

Assistant coach Jason Williford, meanwhile, was planning to spend the first couple of days in Kansas City before heading to Louisville for two more. He'll close out the weekend in Washington, D.C. at the Team Takeover event, according to our sources.

We said that going into the second live period, UVa felt good about where things stood in the post but that there was uncertainty on the wing. That was the focus last week and coming out of it, things sound much more paired down. But that doesn't mean the board is full of prospects that the Cavaliers are making a push to get. Instead, it sounds like Bennett and his staff didn't see but so much from the bevy of wings they were looking at and as such, the pecking order is small. So during this evaluation period, the thinking was to spend more time looking at 2017 and 2018 prospects strictly from a scouting perspective. Sources say the Hoos feel really good about how their recruiting has worked the past couple of years and a lot of that was built off of being able to see young kids, track them, and get them committed early. The thinking was that using this period to watch younger players helps set up that same scenario for future classes.

Blackwell, Sneed, and Jones head up the wings

Let's start by focusing on the wings, which is where some of the developments of the last week reside. As everyone knows by now, four-star Rivals150 small forward Braxton Blackwell is down to six schools: Alabama, Kansas, Tennessee, Texas, Vanderbilt, and UVa. In talking to our sources, the Cavaliers have been in the picture for some time but really started to make a hard push maybe a month or so ago. It wasn't really a surprise to them, then, that they had made his list and, as seems to be the case for every recruit they go after, four-star commit Kyle Guy is friends with Blackwell. Since he'll be at Oak Hill Academy this coming year, the staff will have a chance to see him more often and that definitely won't hurt. There's also talk about some of his family relocating, though there hasn't been any firm details on that front as of yet. Since Blackwell is the nephew of former UVa great Ralph Sampson and already has family in the area, it makes the whole idea of it all work a little better.

So, how do the Wahoos see him fitting if he ultimately decides he wants to come? Well, one source passed along that he's exactly what they're looking for in terms of his style and his frame. They love his length and his game. He's a guy that does everything well. And that theme translates to his all-around game. Bennett loves "complete" players and one source passed along this week that UVa sees Blackwell as a complete guy.

At this point, we haven't heard anything firm in the way of a timeframe from here on out. Our sources said UVa does expect to get a visit at some point.

The other main target right now on the wing appears to be Xavier Sneed, who Williford was set to see in KC this week. The Cavaliers have seen him a lot this month and are really loving what they've seen. Things aren't quite as deep there but word is he's a guy Bennett could make a push for down the road. As we've said before, as much as the staff wants a wing in this class they're not going to take a guy just to take a guy. Focusing on Blackwell and Sneed is sort of how the Cavaliers work a lot of times, pairing down a list of guys and then seeing where one or two recruitments go before moving. Sources say they're fine with waiting until the spring if that needs to happen in order to get the right guy.

And that may end up being the case if Andrew Jones is that guy and he decides to wait. Simply put: He's really blowing up this month and Virginia isn't the only school to come calling. While sources say that UVa really, really loves him, there's a feeling that it might be a little too late to carve out a niche and gain some traction in his recruitment. That won't stop them from trying, though. Since it still appears that he's ready to take things into the spring, it could work out for the Wahoos. But for now, the focus really seems to be more on Blackwell and Sneed.

Lastly, there are a lot of other guys on the wing that we've mentioned previously that UVa has evaluated and we wouldn't shut the door completely on any of them. At this point, though, we think the focus is on the three mentioned above.

Diakite and Gabriel still atop the board

We thought we'd at least touch on the bigs before moving forward this week, as the Cavaliers remain focused on two there as well in four-star Rivals150 standouts Mamadi Diakite and Wenyen Gabriel.

As discussed the past couple of weeks, things with Diakite are in a great spot and Gabriel, who continues to pick up new interest this month, is working on a longer timeframe. We haven't heard anything new on a potential commitment window for Diakite but we still remain firm in our high number on the Confidence Meter from a couple of weeks back.

Speaking of timeframes, word from four-star Rivals150 big man Tyler Cook is that he could be done sooner than later. Remember, he trimmed his list down to six (Arkansas, Florida, Iowa, Iowa State, Missouri, and UVa) about two months ago and was scheduled to visit UVa until an opportunity to attend a big Nike camp was too good to turn down. Now, he sounds more and more like he wants to be done with his recruitment. He told Rivals this week that he plans to take some visits but he's not sure how many he'll even take. He's not in a hurry but he's not waiting around, either.

So how does that play into UVa's plans? Well that really depends...

The latest on Nichols

We'll close out this week with some notes on what we're hearing about the recruitment of Memphis transfer Austin Nichols. And as much as some folks might cringe at the thought of it, we still haven't heard anything that would give us any cause for concern.

For example, there's now a lot of talk out there about him visiting UVa this weekend. When we first heard mention of a possible visit, the context was important. It was framed as something he "wasn't even sure if he need[ed]" to do. Think about that for a second. Sure, recruiting is crazy and he could end up somewhere else but generally, when a guy gets to the point where he's not sure if he needs a visit, the decision seems sort of elementary at that point. And that's what our sources have said consistently, even after that brief mention of Kansas being involved. This visit feels more like a job interview where they show you where your desk will be. We heard Nichols was curious about where he'd live and he wanted to meet the players, for example. The feeling is it's more of just an extra bit of comfort.

Still, it's easy to see why folks are excited/stress. After all, this is a big-time prospect and no doubt other schools have been trying like crazy to get into the mix. We've heard that the visit, which if it goes according to plan should start on Saturday or Sunday depending on travel schedules, will be the only one. Again, we feel very comfortable with UVa's chances at this point.

That is it for this week, and as always, what's said here, stays here!

Thoughts on that Pan American officiating

What are the thoughts on the Pan American officiating crew?

My opinion was it was outrageous the level of physical, blatant contact these other Foreign teams were allowed to get away with.

Did you see Guzman for DR just drop the shoulder and push his way in for layups. What was with the obvious NO calls on grabs by several of the teams we played in this tourney?

That open court steal and Prince being arm barred and grabbed at half court was ridiculous. The other one which leads to what happen to Baker being smacked in the mouth with DR players swinging arms to clear our players out of the lane on loose balls were also ridiculous how many times it looked like it was instinctive, second nature to swing their arms, hook players underneath and TONS of those push offs, swinging arms and arm bars where not even looked at or called for the most part. Yes, several were called, but at what ratio? 7 to 1? Saw how obvious on instant reply with refs standing and looking.

Just don't think Brogdon was really liking this style of being arm barred, the outrageous moving screens on him and the other guards. Just the fact their guards would walk up and almost put a Judo arm style grappling hold to set a pick against him or as another one of their players would be cutting or driving with the ball to the basket was just garbage style basketball!

The officiating make Lucky and his crew look like Saints with one sided calling in the ACC!

We should just send some big offensive Tackles next Pan American Games to stand under the rim and push the opposition out of the way to clear a path for a driving guard or small forward like these teams were getting away with!

Terrible coaching at the Pan American Games, I can see why Few is at Gonzaga

Real easy to see why Few is at Gonzaga and reaping the best coaching scam, when he can run up 25+ easy wins playing Portland State, Santa Clara and Pepperdine type weak teams in conference year in and year out and a boat load of tiny schools in out of conference play. Most of these schools like the scam in the Wichita State conference are below 100 rankings and close to 200+ ranked teams and should be division II level competition. Can you say cupcakes!

Basically they show up and roll the ball to half court, pick it up and score on those other teams. Not a fan of Kevin Bacon look a like with ZERO energy or fire. His face looked like he had just come from a Botox party. Just a blank stare 90 percent of the time and nothing else.

Few in my opinion really picked some head scratchers on this squad as in I'll shoot most the shots Bobby Brown (and miss most as well)

His staff and him look like they are coaching a pick up game at the Dell. Seen better high school coaching or interaction than this coaching crew.

In his defense it is hard to pick up and stop the wide open Brazilian guard that had two moving screens on just about every outside shoot he took standing flat footed. Wonder if we could get their big men to come play OT on the Cavalier football team for us with that level of moving line/screens ALL night.

Nichols is now unrestricted... (7:28 p.m. Wednesday update)

Memphis has released Austin Nichols and removed all restrictions, meaning he can transfer to any program he wants. According to a trusted source with ties to the school, word is that Nichols will land at UVa. I have been unable to reach any of my Virginia sources to confirm that rumor.

When I hear more, I'll pass it along.

Blanding makes the All-ACC Preseason Team

From the ACC:

2015 All-ACC Preseason Football Team Announced
Clemson leads with five selections; four each from Florida State, Virginia Tech

Clemson leads all schools with five selections to the 2015 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Preseason Football Team announced on Thursday.

The team was selected by a vote of 163 media members who were credentialed for the ACC Football Kickoff earlier this week at Pinehurst Resort.

Clemson sophomore quarterback Deshaun Watson, who earlier this week was voted the ACC Preseason Player of the Year, is joined on the All-ACC preseason team by Tiger wide receivers Mike Williams and Artavis Scott, offensive guard Eric Mac Lain and defensive end Shaq Lawson.

Florida State and Virginia Tech each placed four student-athletes on the 2015 All-ACC preseason team, while Pitt had three selected.

Watson, who threw for 1,466 yards and 14 touchdowns despite being limited to eight games and five starts last season due to injuries, is joined in the offensive backfield by running backs James Conner of Pitt and Shadrach Thornton of NC State.

Conner, a 2014 All-American and the reigning ACC Player of the Year, led the conference and ranked among the nation’s leaders with 1,765 yards rushing and an ACC-record 26 touchdowns as a sophomore. Thornton, a rising senior, ranks 10th in NC State history with 2,369 career rushing yards and 12th all-time among Wolfpack ball-carriers with 16 career rushing touchdowns.

Clemson’s Williams and Scott are joined on the preseason All-ACC wide receiving corps by Pitt junior Tyler Boyd, the the first player in ACC history to compile 1,000 receiving yards in both his freshman and sophomore seasons. Williams joined Boyd as one of four ACC players with at least 1,000 receiving yards in 2014, and Scott was close behind with 965.

Preseason All-ACC tight end recognition goes to Virginia Tech’s Bucky Hodges, a redshirt sophomore who broke in last season with 45 receptions for 526 yards and six TDs. He is joined on the offensive line by Florida State’s Roderick Johnson and Pitt’s Adam Bisnowaty at tackle. North Carolina’s Landon Turner and Clemson’s Mac Lain man the guard spots, while Duke’s Matt Skura was selected at the center position.

Three defensive ends were selected due to ties in the voting, with Virginia Tech’s Dadi Lhomme Nicolas joining Clemson’s Lawson and Louisville’s Sheldon Rankins. Adam Gotsis of defending Coastal Division champion Georgia Tech is a choice at defensive tackle, along with Virginia Tech’s Luther Maddy.
Florida State’s Terrance Smith, Wake Forest’s Brandon Chubb and Louisville’s James Burgess form the preseason All-ACC linebacker corps.

The secondary features a trio of returning All-Americans in cornerbacks Jalen Ramsey of Florida State and Kendall Fuller of Virginia Tech, as well as Duke safety Jeremy Cash. Virginia’s Quin Blanding, the 2014 ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year, also earned a spot at safety on the preseason team.

The special teams include junior All-America placekicker Roberto Aguayo, whose 293 total points in two seasons already ranks eighth on Florida State’s all-time list. Wake Forest’s Alex Kinal earned the spot at punter, while North Carolina’s Ryan Switzer is the choice at return specialist.

Pitt’s Conner led the overall voting, being chosen by 148 of the 163 media members casting ballots. Florida State’s Aguayo received 141 votes.

Others reaching or topping the century mark were Pitt’s Boyd (137 votes), Duke’s Cash (116), Florida State’s Ramsey (115), Virginia Tech’s Fuller (112), Duke’s Skura (111), North Carolina’s Turner (108), Virginia Tech’s Nicolas (108), Florida State’s Johnson (104) and Clemson’s Watson (100).

Boyd, Conner, Aguayo, Fuller and Ramsey were all named first-team All-ACC last year, while Scott, Williams, Nicolas, Gotsis, Smith, Cash, Blanding and Kinal all earned second-team All-ACC. Switzer, Hodges, Turner, Skura and Rankins were 2014 third-team All-ACC selections.

The WAR CLOSET

As we start this new edition of the War Closet we need to emphasize that we are a news reporting service primarily focused on UVA Athletics. We report news as it happens, we don't always like what we report but we are obligated to report it fairly and honestly regardless of our personal viewpoints.
Very disappointing news out of Short Pump, Va. where the National Guard has been called in to disperse immense crowds of mostly Virginia Basketball fans. First lets go to relationships, it has been discovered that Coach K aka " the ferret" and Brad Franklin aka "the weasel" are distant cousins. Apparently the scam is to steal prominent recruits from UVA and direct them to Duke. It has now been disclosed that 3 recruits from 2014 class had wanted to enroll at UVA for 4 years and they were directed or persuaded to enroll at Duke University by the weasel. To protect the innocent we will not mention their names but all 3 disliked Duke so much that they left after 1 year and out of desperation all 3 signed up for the NBA draft. Although, it has not been proved if any money was involved we we do know that the weasel did accept a dark blue Duke monogrammed bathrobe with fuzzy slippers from the ferret.
This brings us to the present where it has been discovered that two very sought after Virginia recruits, again not mentioning names but the initials of MD and AN are currently with the ferret on a deep sea fishing expedition somewhere in the Atlantic that was arranged by the weasel. Loyal Virginia fans have been patiently waiting for both long overdue committments and being told by the weasel "not to worry" that his sources tell him "it's going to happen just be patient". Those same loyal good looking fans upon finding out that the source was no other than the ferret hmself are now marching in Short Pump, Va, demanding answers.
It is our opinion that although the weasel had been very well liked at Virginia, that blood relations were just too much to overcome. Stay tuned for the next WAR CLOSET and when the deep sea fishing is over.
