Baseball: Canes storm back to beat UVa

From UVa:

Miami Defeats Virginia, 9-5
Hurricanes rally with seven runs in eighth inning to grab pool-play win

Miami scored seven runs in the eighth inning to rally from a three-run deficit and top the Virginia baseball team, 9-5, Wednesday afternoon in pool play at the ACC Baseball Championship at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, N.C. The No. 7 seed in the tournament, Virginia (34-20) had its six-game win streak snapped, while the second-seeded Hurricanes (43-13) extended their win streak to 13 games.

Now 0-1 in pool play, Virginia has the day off on Thursday. The Cavaliers return at 11 a.m. Friday to play No. 3 seed Notre Dame and then take on No. 6 seed NC State at 7 p.m. Saturday.

“Certainly the end of the ballgame was difficult and frustrating,” Virginia head coach Brian O’Connor said. "I was proud of our guys for how they hung in there and figured out a way to get three runs on Kenny Towns’ three-run home run in the sixth inning. I thought Connor Jones was terrific. He continues to pitch very well for us. Miami has got a terrific offensive ballclub. The middle of their order has a lot of home runs and a lot of RBI. They have some guys with speed and we were hoping that we could put them away, but we couldn’t do it. Credit them for that."

Virginia starting pitcher Connor Jones (So., Chesapeake, Va.) was tremendous and worked 7 1/3 innings, giving up four runs (two earned), four hits and two walks while striking out seven. After giving up three hits in the first two innings, Jones did not allow another hit until Jacob Heyward’s one-out single in the eighth inning. It marked Jones’ fifth straight start of at least seven innings and seven strikeouts.

UVa reliever Alec Bettinger (So., Woodbridge, Va.) took the loss and dropped to 4-4 after giving up four runs (three earned), two hits and a walk in one-third of an inning. Bryan Garcia (5-2) earned the win after pitching 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Miami starter Thomas Woodrey worked 5 2/3 innings, giving up three runs (two earned), three hits and two walks with a pair of strikeouts.

Both teams finished with seven hits in a game that was a pitchers’ duel for most of the game. Kenny Towns (Sr., Burke, Va.) hit a three-run home run as part of a 2-for-4 day, while Joe McCarthy (Jr., Scranton, Pa.) drove in a pair of runs. Towns now has hit three career homers in the ACC Baseball Championship – all in Durham.

Miami took advantage of a Virginia miscue in the opening inning. George Iskenderian hit a two-out single, moved to second on an errant pickoff throw to first by Jones and scored when Zack Collins singled to left-center.

The Hurricanes parlayed another UVa error in the fifth inning into a run. After a Daniel Pinero (So., Toronto, Ontario) error put runners on the corners with none out, Ricky Eusebio lifted a sacrifice fly to center.

UVa put Adam Haseley (Fr., Windermere, Fla.) and Pinero on first and second on an error and single, respectively, to start the sixth inning. One out later, Towns launched a three-run blast over the Blue Monster in left-center field. It was his fifth home run of the season and his third career homer in the ACC tournament.

Virginia added a pair of runs in the top of the eighth when McCarthy lined a two-out, two-run double to right field, scoring Matt Thaiss (So., Jackson, N.J.) and Pavin Smith (Fr., Jupiter, Fla.).

Miami sent 10 batters to the plate while scoring seven runs in the eighth inning, marking the most runs allowed by the Cavaliers in an inning this season. After Jones retired the leadoff batter, the next seven Miami batters reached base safely. Jones was relieved by Kevin Doherty (Jr., Laytonsville, Md.) after walking Eusebio to put runners on first and second. Doherty gave up an RBI single to Christopher Barr, and UVa went to Bettinger. Iskenderian reached on an error, with Eusebio scoring to pull Miami within 5-4. Collins walked to load the bases, and David Thompson followed with a two-run single to give Miami the lead. Two batters later, Garrett Kennedy ripped a three-run homer to right to push the lead to 9-5.

Baseball: Hoos clobber GT, Sborz fires one hitter

From UVa:

Virginia Defeats Georgia Tech in ACC Opener, 11-0 in Seven Innings
Sborz fires one-hit shutout as Cavaliers advance to pool play

Behind a one-hit shutout from right-hander Josh Sborz (Jr., McLean, Va.), the Virginia baseball team blanked Georgia Tech, 11-0, Tuesday in the opening game of the 2015 ACC Baseball Championship at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, N.C. The game concluded after seven innings because of the tournament’s 10-run mercy rule.

Winners of six straight games, the seventh-seeded Cavaliers (34-19) advance into the pool-play portion of the tournament. UVa will play No. 2 seed Miami at 3 p.m. Wednesday, No. 3 seed Notre Dame at 11 a.m. Friday and No. 6 seed NC State at 7 p.m. Saturday. The 10th-seeded Yellow Jackets (32-23) were eliminated from the tournament.

“Josh Sborz has been very, very unselfish,” Virginia head coach Brian O'Connor. "It’s amazing how, when you take that approach in this game, the game comes back and rewards you. We had a ton of confidence in him. It seems like every time that we’ve given this guy the ball in a big situation in his career, he’s come through.

"Hopefully we can continue to play good baseball. Certainly our opponent tomorrow and then the opponents on Friday and Saturday are all high-quality teams. When you win the play-in game and get in this final pool, anybody can win it.”

UVa recorded its first run-rule victory in the ACC tournament since a 13-1 win in seven innings over Wake Forest on May 25, 2011.

Sborz (3-2) was masterful in recording the first complete game and shutout of his career as well as the first complete game by a Cavalier pitcher this season. UVa recorded its first shutout of an ACC opponent this year.

Sborz retired the first 18 Georgia Tech batters before pinch hitter Ryan Peurifoy broke up the perfect-game bid with a double off the Blue Monster in left-center field to open the seventh inning. Sborz walked a pair of batters in the seventh before leaving the bases loaded to end the game. He also struck out a season-high eight batters.

Georgia Tech starter Jonathan King (4-5) took the loss after giving up seven earned runs and eight hits in three-plus innings.

Virginia scored in four of its six trips the plate while piling up 13 hits. Daniel Pinero (So., Toronto, Ontario) recorded a pair of hits, including a home run, while scoring three runs and driving in a career-high four runs. Adam Haseley (Fr., Windermere, Fla.) had two hits and scored four runs, while four other Cavaliers also posted a pair of hits. Pavin Smith (Fr., Jupiter, Fla.) homered as part of his two-hit day.

Virginia scored quickly in the first inning. Haseley singled to right on the game’s first pitch, moved to second on a Pinero sacrifice and scored on a Matt Thaiss (So., Jackson, N.J.) single to center.

The Cavaliers sent eight batters to the plate in a four-run third inning. After Haseley and Pinero drew back-to-back walks to start the inning, Thaiss advanced the runners with a groundout. Kenny Towns (Sr., Burke, Va.) followed with a single to center to score both runners. Smith then launched a two-run blast into the right-field stands, his sixth home run of the season.

UVa added three runs in the fourth inning to up its lead to 8-0. Ernie Clement (Fr., Rochester, N.Y.) doubled on the first pitch of the inning and Haseley followed with a bunt single, which spelled the end of the day for King. Cole Pitts entered and after a wild pitch advanced Haseley to second, Pinero ripped a two-run single to right. Thaiss then doubled to right-center to bring Pinero home.

Virginia scored three more in the fifth, getting an RBI single from Clement before Pinero drilled a two-run homer over the Blue Monster in left field, his sixth long ball of the season.

Two QB's gone in a week

Football is becoming that bad hangover you can't get rid of. Why did we bring London back? It was dumb to bring a new OC in with a coach on the hot seat even if needed, so why not get rid of the coach?

It's appalling to an alum such as myself that the athletic department can be so mindless to not even see the problems going on the program. I'm not trying to sound rude or step on anyone's toes but how can you be so dumb? The program has shown no trajectory of progress since we made a bowl game, we keep scheduling tough opponents that we don't need to and our highly recruited classes don't show signs of many guys improving.

I'm stocking up on alcohol now just to get to basketball season.
