Countdown to Camp: UVa has questions to answer at RB

Countdown to Camp: @justin ferber's annual series moves to the running backs, where UVa has some questions to answer heading into the 2024 season.

OT - What MLB team had the best four man pitching staff?

I grew up in an era when pitching tended to dominate the hitting. and there were several pitching staffs with several pitchers who were future Hall of Famers. The Dodgers had a farm team in Newport News-Hampton, so I became a Dodger fan. They had staffs headed by Koufax and Drysdale, but had problems with the Ford led Yankees. About the same time Cleveland staff was headed by Feller and Lemon. The Braves had just two reliable pitchers who earned the quip, Spahn and Sain and pray for rain. Later on the Braves had some excellent staffs led by Maddux and Glavine..
Some of you young whippersnappers may have not been around to appreciate these pitchers. Who do you consider to be among the best four man rotations?
There are no prizes because there is not, in my humble opinion, an obvious correct answer.

OT - The impact of Clark on the WNBA

About one month ago I suggested that Clark should have been selected for the USA Olympic team. At that time several posters disagreed for several justifiable reasons. It was stated that her stats were not good enough, that she had not had an impact on her team's record, and that her popularity should not be a factor in the selection for the team. Since then there have been some changes that I believe to be significant.
Her stats have continued to improve. She is averaging about 17 points a game; she is a very close second in the league in assists, and is likely the best rebounding guard. She has already established new league and team records; she is the first rookie to have a triple double, and she had five straight games with a double double.
She was selected by the Indiana Fever. The team had little talent as indicated by the team's 13 - 27 record in 2023. The team started the 2024 season with a 2 - 8 record but has gone 9 - 6 in the last fifteen games for a 11 - 14 record to date. She has led her team to victories over higher ranked teams who have two players selected for the Olympic team.
Her popularity has been greater than expected, Opponents have almost always moved the venue to larger arenas when the Fever team comes to town. The prices for tickets to the next game in Dallas range from a low of $168 for seats in the corner sections to $3, 243 for seats behind the Fever bench. This compares very favorably to the price of Virginia's first football game selling for $22 to $106.
There are now four players selected for the Olympic team that are currently injured, and Clark has been suggested as a possible replacement if any of them are unable to play.. More than ever, I agree.

Countdown to Camp: Depth at safety gives UVa lots of options

Countdown to Camp: Depth at safety gives the Wahoos lots of options heading into the fall. Ferber looks at how things stack up at what should be one of UVa’s strongest positions.

Kyle Teel Futures Game performance

Kyle had a big night at the MLB Futures Game last night. Below is a piece from the MLB game write up:

Kyle Teel showed why he could be one of the game’s top offensive catchers at some point within the next few years. One year after being taken by Boston with the 14th overall pick, the former Virginia Cavalier standout tallied a pair of doubles, making him the only player in the game to deliver a mutilhit performance.
The left-handed-hitting backstop doubled off a slider from MLB's No. 20 prospect Rhett Lowder (Reds) in the fifth and a 98.4 mph heater from MLB's No. 51 prospect Bubba Chandler (Pirates) in the seventh. Teel ranks as MLB’s No. 24 prospect (Red Sox's No. 3) and has hit .298 with eight homers and an .839 OPS for Double-A Portland this year.

Storylines abound as summer workouts continue at UVa

Storylines about as summer workouts continue at UVa. @justin ferber takes a look at several of them as the Hoos head deeper into the offseason.

Summer Sports

Because of the lack of collegiate, and particularly UVA, sports during the past few weeks, I have watched several sporting events that I normally would avoid. Chief among these was the WNBA. I believe that there are five skills to look for in every player - shooting accuracy, ball handling, rebounding, defense, and speed. I have watched portions of several WNBA games and highlights of several more. This sample was sufficient to convince me that there are no more than ten players in the WNBA that possess at least three of these five skills.
In spite of this, the announcers and commentators rave about routine plays. I have concluded that my eyes must be lying because quality was not what I have been seeing. The centers have been doing a lot of scoring because low post defense is bad. Passes were often made to no one in particular, and if the passes reached the hands of a teammate, it was often dropped. Open layups were frequently bricked and rebounding numbers were increased by grabbing missed bunnies. Coaching and officiating calls were routinely baffling.
All in all, I found the games boring. I am looking forward to the start of college sports.

Wow - Filipowski's family slamming Duke coaches, program post-K

The art of being a professionally aggrieved victim is in full bloom. After Kyle Filipowski's disappointing drop into the second round of the draft, his brother and mother are blaming the Duke coaches for not intervening to put the brakes on Kyle's relationship with a 28-year-old gold-digger girlfriend. Not sure how that relates to the draft, but good beach reading!
