Women Fall to 0-6 in the ACC

The women played another ranked ACC team tonight in Notre Dame. Ended up losing 86-76. Shot a bit better than our averages, but gave up 44 free throws! Taylor was again in foul trouble all night and fouled out along with Clarkson while Brunelle contributed 0 points. We are getting beat up on the inside in league play with Taylor in foul trouble almost every game lately and nobody to really take up the slack inside when she is out. Our young guards Johnson, Clark and McGhee all played really well and combined for 46 of the 76 points. Tough schedule coming up with 3 more ranked teams in our next 4 games with only a home game with a non-ranked Pitt mixed in. If they don't win that Pitt game they could be looking at an 0-10 start in league play. Really tough schedule this year and certainly a more talented and deeper team (without the injuries as well) than last year, but just not showing in the results. Hope they can knock one of the ranked teams off (or more) coming up and get some positive momentum going.

Staring five lead Virginia to first ACC road win of the season 75-66 over Georgia Tech

The usual suspects dominated the statistics as the starters scored 64 points. McKneely led the scoring with 20 points by hitting 6 of his 9 three-point attempts.. Beekman scored 19 points and had 11 assists, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals. Minor scored 11 points, and Dunn contributed 9 points and led the team with 10 rebounds, including 5 on the offensive boards. Rohde was frequently our secondary ball handler, played good defense, and scored 5 points. The Yellow Jackets had 13 turnovers which led to 21 points for the Hoos.
Georgia Tech led by 11 points around the middle of the first half before Virginia went on a run to take a 33 to 29 lead at the end of the half. Virginia extended the lead to 15 points before Georgia Tech scored 9 unanswered points in the second half.

Virginia adds 1/2 point to lead in Commonwealth Clash after defeating VT 65 - 57

Minor and Harris had their best games this year. Minor started and tied Beekman as the leading scorer with 16 points and was second to Dunn in rebounding with 5. Harris led Virginia with 5 assists; he only scored 5 points, but they all seemed to come in important times. Buchanan joined McKneely with 8 points and had 3 rebounds in 11+ minutes on the floor. The Hokies kept the score close by making 11 of 30 attempts from behind the arc while Virginia was just 4 of 14, but Virginia outscored Tech 36 to 20 in the paint and made 7 more fouls shots, many of which came in the last few minutes of the game.

Football visitors at JPJ Tonight

I wanted to pass along that a portion of the football coaching staff was hosting a few recruits today, sitting behind the UVa bench. That’s a bit different, as the recruits usually sit upstairs behind the student section.

Tony Elliott, Adam Mims, Curome Cox and Des Kitchings were all courtside, and seemed to be having a good time chatting with the recruits and taking in the game and atmosphere.

As for the visitors:

Woodson is the younger brother of VT LB and 2023 recruit Caleb Woodson, who UVa pursued. He announced an offer from UVa today.

A priority target for UVa, Earls is from the same high school (Thomas Dale) as Chris Tyree and Ethan Minter, both of whom are enrolled at UVa now.

A big-time baseball recruit that was committed to South Carolina, Matthews picked up a UVa football offer today on Grounds. UNC, VT and others are heavily involved.

Harvard transfer TE Tyler Neville was down there with the staff, too.

Junior Day visitors

Hey everyone, I’m Dylan Callaghan-Croley and will be assisting with recruiting coverage going forward. I’m based in the region and west a variety of hats here on Rivals covering a list of teams.

Nevertheless, working on confirming some Virginia junior day visitors. Will be updating below.

January 27

ATH Messiah Delhomme (Newport News, VA)
OL Carter Scruggs (Loudon County, VA)

=/- Stats

Does anyone have those for the Wake game or for the ACC games or for the season? Those are not perfect in evaluating performance (eg, it depends who is on the floor with a player, the opponent, the stage of the game, etc), but they can help identify relative contributions.

Kate Douglass breaks American Record in 200 Breaststroke

With Paris 2024 this Summer, several UVA swimmers are positioning well for Olympic Team spots - both US and international - and medal contention.

The year's first Pro Series meet was in Knoxville this week, where Kate just swam the 5th-fastest time in history and set new American and US Open records (US Open is the fastest time swum in an American pool, regardless of nationality), a pretty amazing swim for a January meet.

In a strong women's meet field, she also won the 100 Freestyle. Douglass still trains at UVA, though has graduated, so doesn't swim in UVA meets this year.

Claire Curzan (also training at UVA, but not eligible for the NCAA team due to transfer) won the 200 Backstroke and finished 2nd in the 100 Back. She'll be in the fight for the Olympic Team in a handful of events.
Gretchen Walsh won the 100 Butterfly, finished 2nd to Kate in the 100 Free, and continues to progress toward Olympic medal contention.
Alex Walsh - 2020 Tokyo Olympic Silver medalist in the 200 IM (Kate won Bronze that year) - swam one of the 3 fastest times in the world this year, finishing 2nd only to Canadian phenom Summer McIntosh in the 200IM.

The women's team is still favored to win its 4th-straight NCAA title, as Alex Walsh, Gretchen Walsh, and Ella Nelson continue to anchor the team along with several other standouts.

Transfer Commitment! Clemson TE Sage Ennis

Sage Ennis, a grad transfer TE from Clemson, has announced his commitment to UVa following a weekend visit and decommitment from FAMU. He has one year of eligibility remaining. He is a very good blocking TE and played often at Clemson prior to a knee injury this season late in the year.
