This was a big win for us.

We took a real punch in the mouth in the first half and could have easily let it get away from us, but we kept at it and kept it reasonable to close out the first half. Then that second half was incredible. To show that kind of toughness and tenacity against a good team on a big stage, that's going to do us a tremendous amount of good going forward. Confidence and belief in yourself makes everything else better. This could be a season defining game.

Predicting the depth chart

This is going to be a rather long post but I don't have another forum to go to and thought I would take a look at the roster and try and figure out how the depth chart would play out next season. So I'll go through who is returning to every position next year. This does not take into account the freshmen class that will be coming in next fall, just those currently on the roster. Class does not take into freshmen that redshirted last year, so some players may show up as Sophomores, but in reality will be RS Freshmen next season. Also of note, positions are based solely on how they are on the official roster, so for example Zaccheaus is listed as a RB, even though he didn't play there for the majority of the year. Okay, now that is out of the way, let's take a look.

Offensive pieces are definitely there, but there doesn't really look to be a "go-to" receiver.

Playable depth on D across the board seems like an issue. I'm sure someone will emerge, but it would look like some of the first years might have to step up to have some depth. What first years do you guys see coming in that could crack the two deep?

This is just what I have come up, curious what others think.

CavsCorner Video: Matt Johns

Quarterback Matt Johns wasn't quite as surprised as the rest of the world to hear that UVa had hired Bronco Mendenhall as its next coach but that didn't dampen his excitement at all.

In this video interview, he talks about that, about the message of accountability and how important it is to the Cavaliers, about Mendenhall's track record and why that's what the team needs, about what he feels like his role is in helping the team buy in, and about the biggest takeaway he had from Mendenhall's time talking to the team: Train hard and be ready.

West Virginia Game Thoughts

Slow start even though I didn't mind the starting lineup.

Gill was our first half MVP. West Virginia was the more physical team early in the game and his attacking the basket on offense kept us in the game.

This is the most we have gotten beat on the glass in a while. We fixed this in the second half, but every game early we seem to allow teams second chances at the basket. Yes, some are coming off long rebounds due to 3 point shots, but I have gotten used to one shot and done from TB coaches clubs (boy how we are spoiled).

Wilkins and Hall are giving us the minutes we'll need late in the year. They don't stick out in the stat sheet per se, but they are growing into their roles nicely.

Going small with Wilkins in the second half at the 4 really made the difference. Some teams will require Tobey and Salt to sit. Really glad TB has embraced small ball

Even with the turnovers and lack of energy early, I never thought we'd lose this game. I trusted TB to out coach Huggins in the second half. WVU relies on getting turnovers in their aggressive play where Tony is going to adjust and always count on our defense to be the thing that gets us over the hump.

LP, LP, LP- he is the key for us getting to the final four. That kid was an assassin in the second half. Whatever we thought on the board from that funky head the first couple games can be quietly buried and put to rest. In a game like that where a team keeps pressuring you just like the VCU game last year, his play at the point guard position against pressure is textbook.

DT attacking the basket also sticks out. He can make a 3 from time to time, but he is at his best in transition and when he gets to the rim.

The second half offense coming off a curl cuts was just a beauty to watch. It's almost an extension of in football when you're running the ball down the team's throat and just wearing them out not only physically, but mentally. This is probably the first time all season where mover-blocker absolutely worked to perfection and because LP was in the game our spacing on the court seemed a lot better than it has been the last few games.

MB gets 14 points and I barely notice. Sign of a great team.

Nolte has been good the last few games just getting guys in the right spots and bringing energy on the floor. We need his 3 point shot at some point, but his experience as a senior has shown to be needed during certain times

This is one of the biggest wins in the Tony Bennett era. Yes I know that's a little presumptuous considering it's a regular-season game when the season isn't even one third done yet, but there are many reasons we started scheduling like this. We were away from the home environment with a tournament and we basically take a punch from a top 15 team and straight demolish them in the second half. Go Hoos.

WVU/UVa game thread...

About a half an hour from the tip up in New York City between No. 14 West Virginia and No. 10 UVa. As I posted earlier, word inside Madison Square Garden is that London Perrantes will play for the Cavaliers tonight. I'll be back in a few with starters and game updates to follow.

As always, have at it folks...

The cupboard is not bare for Mendenhall.

There are several positions in which UVA has playable depth returning from this year. If we can keep our offensive linemen healthy, we will be in good shape with Bischoff, Doull, English, Fieler, Karl, Matteo, McDonald, Mooney, Moss, Olanrewaju, Smith, and Tetlow. At running back we have Ellis, Hamm, Mizell, Reid, Wingo-Reeves, and Zaccheaus. We will miss Severin and Thorpe at wide receiver, but we have Docking, Dowling, Eldridge, Johnson, and Levrone returning. Tight end will need some help as Butts is the only player returning with significant playing time. Johns is the returning starter at quarterback,, and Brewer also returns. The situation is not as good on the defensive side. We will be thin on the defensive line, but we will be in better shape at linebacker with Bradshaw, Gamble, Hall, Kiser, and Stalker returning. We will have four potential starters returning at defensive back in Harris, Latimore, Wahee, and Walker, but we will have to develop some back-ups. Unfortunately, it appears that most of our better in-coming players are at positions where we already have decent depth.

CavsCorner Video: Darius Thompson

Redshirt sophomore guard Darius Thompson had one of the most electric dunks in recent memory in No. 10 UVa's 67-52 win over William & Mary on Saturday. In this video interview, he talks about the dunk, about getting out in transition, about his role with London Perrantes sidelined by the appendectomy, about playing tomorrow night at famed Madison Square Garden, and how he would assess the team's status through the first seven games of the year.
