MGOLF and WGOLF at NCAAs

The #25 men's golf team failed to advance to Round 4 (top 15) and finished NCAAs in 18th place. Denny McCarthy is still competing for the chance to win the individual title (although that is a long shot). The top 8 teams after 4 rounds advance to an 8-team playoff featuring match play.

A week earlier, the #10 women's golf team also failed to advance to Round 4 and finished tied for 20th place.

Chukwu and KU

KU just signed an Ole Miss big man transfer so I have to think they will dip out of the running for Paschal Chukwu's services. I know Nebraska is a real threat and MSU is in the running but getting one major player out of the way has to help us significantly.

USC beats SD State. Looks tired.

SD State leading USC 8-7, but both starters are out and the bullpens are getting a workout. That's about as good as we can hope for, excluding a multi-extra inning finish.

USC was up 7-3 at the start of the 6th. Crazy sequence at 7-6 with a botched suicide squeeze with runners at 1st and 3rd, but the third base baserunner got back to 3rd and the other one advanced to second. A triple scored both runners.

Virginia Defeats San Diego State, 3-1, Reaches Regional Title Game
Cavaliers face winner of USC-SDSU elimination game Sunday at 10 p.m. ET

The Virginia baseball team advanced to the regional championship game at the NCAA Lake Elsinore Regional with a 3-1 victory over San Diego State Saturday night at Lake Elsinore Diamond in Lake Elsinore, Calif. The No. 3 seed in the region, Virginia (36-22) needs one win to advance to the NCAA Super Regional and plays for the regional championship at 10 ET/7 PT on Sunday evening. Second-seeded USC (38-20) and fourth-seeded SDSU (41-22) play at 6 ET/3 PT, with the winner moving on to the championship game and needing to beat the Cavaliers twice in order to advance.

The Cavaliers’ nine-hole hitter, Ernie Clement (Fr., Rochester, N.Y.) hit the go-ahead RBI single with one out in the eighth to give the Cavaliers their first lead of the evening while quieting the decidedly pro-San Diego State crowd in attendance. Virginia advances to its seventh regional championship game in the last nine years and is seeking its sixth regional title in program history.

“I’m very proud of our ballclub,” Virginia head coach Brian O’Connor said. “Brandon Waddell was terrific tonight. I’m sure he didn’t want to come out of the game in the eighth inning because he was pitching his heart out. He had a fantastic outing. A lot of credit goes to San Diego State. Their starting pitcher [Mark Seyler] was really good and did a fantastic job. We were fortunate to hang in there, and that’s because Brandon was pitching well and we played good defense and found a way to scratch across a couple of runs in the eighth.

“Here we are, we have a chance to play for a Regional Championship. We’ve been in this scenario quite a bit – I think seven of the last nine years we’ve been in the regional finals – so that’s a testament to these players, how hard they play, and how they figure out ways to win and grind it out this time of the year.”

For the second straight night, Virginia’s pitching was brilliant as starting pitcher Brandon Waddell (Jr., Houston, Texas) and reliever Josh Sborz (Jr., McLean, Va.) combined to limit SDSU to four hits – all singles. Waddell turned in his best start of the season, working a season-best 7 1/3 innings and giving up an unearned run, four singles and two walks while striking out five. Waddell made his 49th career start and seventh career NCAA tournament start – both rank second in Virginia history.

Sborz stranded runners in scoring position in the eighth and ninth innings to earn the win and improve to 4-2 on the year. SDSU starter Mark Seyler (9-3) took the loss after allowing three runs (two earned), five hits and five walks while striking out one.

Virginia recorded six hits. Joe McCarthy (Jr., Scranton, Pa.) homered and scored two runs, while Matt Thaiss (So., Jackson, N.J.) went 2-for-4. Alan Trejo had two of SDSU’s hits and collected the Aztecs’ lone RBI.

SDSU took advantage of a Virginia error to break a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning. Spencer Thornton reached to lead off the inning when first baseman Robbie Coman (Jr., Lake Worth, Fla.) flipped high to a covering Waddell at first base for an error. After a sacrifice bunt and groundout moved Thornton around to third, Trejo hit a rocket off the glove of a diving Kenny Towns (Sr., Burke, Va.) at third base to put the Aztecs on top, 1-0.

Virginia tied the game in its half of the fifth inning when McCarthy launched a towering blast over the 36-foot-high wall in right-center field for his first home run of the season as well as his first career long ball in NCAA tournament play.

Sborz stranded Trejo at third base in the top of the eighth as shortstop Daniel Pinero (So., Toronto, Ontario) made a great ranging stop on a grounder to his left to throw out Danny Sheehan and end the inning. The Cavaliers took a 3-1 lead in their half of the eighth. McCarthy drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by pinch hitter Justin Novak (Fr., Tokyo, Japan). Clement then blooped a single into left-center field to score McCarthy and give UVa a 2-1 advantage.

Clement went to second on the throw to the plate, but was thrown out trying to advance to third after the ball briefly got away. Adam Haseley (Fr., Windermere, Fla.) followed with triple to right-center and after SDSU brought in reliever Brian Heldman, Pinero hit a grounder to third that was booted by Ty France for an error, allowing Haseley to cross the plate.

The winner of the Lake Elsinore Regional will advance to play the champion of the Los Angeles Regional in an NCAA Super Regional June 5-7 or 6-8. The Los Angeles Regional consists of host UCLA, Ole Miss, Maryland and Cal State Bakersfield.

More hoops non-con schedule news

Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports tweeted out that UVa will host William & Mary at JPJ on Saturday, December 5th. Here's what we have on the non-conference schedule to date (Sorry if I miss anything):

11/16: @George Washington
11/19-11/22: Charleston Classic (Three games)
12/1: at Ohio State (ACC/B1G Challenge)
12/5: William & Mary
12/8: West Virginia (Jimmy V Classic at MSG)
12/22: California
Villanova (in December, date TBD)

Based on that, I'd assume UVa will open up the season on either Friday, November 13th or Saturday, November 14th. The exam break should start after that WVU game, and I could see UVa returning to the court around December 17th. Saturday, December 19th would probably be the most sensible date for the Villanova game, unless they play the following weekend, after the holiday. In addition to the 9 games listed above, UVa will probably have three more games in there somewhere, probably against lower-level competition.

Virginia Defeats USC, 6-1, in NCAA Lake Elsinore Regional
Jones and Sborz combine on five-hitter as Cavaliers advance to winners’ bracket

The Virginia baseball team opened the NCAA Lake Elsinore Regional with a 6-1 win over USC Friday afternoon at Lake Elsinore Diamond in Lake Elsinore, Calif. The region’s No. 3 seed, Virginia (35-22) advances to play at 10 p.m. ET on Saturday and face the winner of the UC Santa Barbara-San Diego State game, which will be played Friday night. The No. 2 seed, USC (37-20) will play the loser of the UCSB-SDSU game at 6 p.m. ET on Saturday in an elimination contest.

Virginia won its opening game in the NCAA tournament for the seventh straight season.

Virginia starting pitcher Connor Jones (So., Chesapeake, Va.) worked 7 2/3 innings, giving up an earned run, five hits and two walks while striking out four as he earned the win and improved to 6-2 on the year. It marked his sixth straight start of at least 7 2/3 innings. Josh Sborz (Jr., McLean, Va.) worked the final 1 1/3 innings to earn his 13th save.

USC starter Kyle Davis (3-3) took the loss after allowing six runs (three earned), seven hits and two walks over 8 2/3 innings. Davis took a no-hitter into the seventh inning.

Adam Haseley (Fr., Windermere, Fla.) and Joe McCarthy (Jr., Scranton, Pa.) each doubled and went 2-for-4 for Virginia, which finished with seven hits over its final three innings. Jeremy Martinez and Garrett Stubbs each had two hits for USC as they combined for all but one of the Trojans’ hits.

The teams played to a scoreless stalemate through six innings before the Cavaliers broke through to take a lead they would not relinquish. Leadoff batter Matt Thaiss (So., Jackson, N.J.) reached on a fielding error by third baseman Blake Lacey, and Kenny Towns (Sr., Burke, Va.) followed with a ringing single to left field for the Cavaliers’ first hit. Pavin Smith (Fr., Jupiter, Fla.) put down a great sacrifice bunt to third base, his first sacrifice of the season. Robbie Coman (Jr., Lake Worth, Fla.) then hit a grounder back to the mound that caromed off the glove of Davis and toward first base. As the Trojans got the 1-3-1 putout, Thaiss crossed the plate for the game’s first run. Davis then fired a wild pitch, allowing Towns to slide in safely.

UVa tacked on a run in the eighth inning. Haseley hit a leadoff double to left field and moved to third on a Daniel Pinero (So., Toronto, Ontario) sacrifice bunt. With the infield drawn in, Thaiss hit a chopper that second baseman Dante Flores could not corral, with Haseley scoring.

The Trojans scored their lone run in the eighth as Stubbs drew a two-out walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Martinez single to left. Sborz entered the game and battled back from 3-0 hole to strike out Timmy Robinson to end the inning. He retired the Trojans in order in the ninth to finish off the win.

Virginia put up three insurance runs in the ninth inning, all coming with two outs. With pinch runner Thomas Woodruff (Sr., Clifton, Va.) on third and McCarthy on second, Ernie Clement (Fr., Rochester, N.Y.) blooped a ball down the right-field line that dropped fair in between three USC defenders for a two-run double. Haseley then hit the first pitch from reliever Tyler Gilbert back up the middle for an RBI single.

Diakite

Says he wants to visit Louisville and likes what they are telling him. Georgetown is recruiting him"hard". No plans as to when he'll decide. Not that good for us. I'm guessing that maybe TB told him how much work he would need to put in to become a major player for us and that wasn't something that he liked hearing.
