I'm stepping on the limb

I will go ahead and say we are going to win 8 games this season barring crazy injuries, including an opening win @UCLA. I am choosing to be optimistic that Beatty and Hagans and Borbely can make the offense go and that Tenuta aand Archer and London will keep the D at a high level. Finally statistically we are due to get some of the 50/50 breaks to fall our way. I'm going with it until I get proven otherwise. Also 94 days to kickoff I believe!

UVa officially announces incoming RB transfer

From UVa:

Running Back Albert Reid Transfers to Virginia from Maryland
Maryland graduate will spend final two seasons of eligibility with the Cavaliers

Maryland running back Albert Reid (Washington, D.C.) has announced he will transfer to Virginia for his final two seasons of football eligibility. Reid is scheduled to graduate from Maryland in July with a degree in criminology and criminal justice and will be able to play immediately for the Cavaliers. He will enroll in a graduate program in the Curry School of Education for the fall semester and participate in preseason practice with the team in August.

“Albert’s addition to our running back corps will make that group better,” said Virginia football head coach Mike London. “He is a player with substantial college experience who is a downhill, direct runner and he’s very physical. Albert has been a member of Maryland’s leadership council, which shows he is well respected by his teammates.”

Reid spent three seasons at Maryland and appeared in four games in 2014 with one start before suffering an injury that forced him to miss the remainder of the campaign. Reid received a medical hardship for the 2014 season and will have two seasons of eligibility for the Cavaliers.

Reid appeared in 28 career games at Maryland with four starts, amassing 447 career yards on 122 carries with three touchdowns. Reid also collected 15 career receptions for 129 yards and a touchdown.

Reid is a 2012 graduate of Friendship Collegiate Academy where he was a four-star prospect where he racked up 1,705 yards and 17 total touchdowns his senior year for the Knights. He was listed as the 25th-best running back in the nation by Scout.com and was the 2011 Washington, D.C. Gatorade Player of the Year.

From UVa:

Virginia Hosts Maryland in NCAA Super Regional Beginning Friday
Cavaliers and Terrapins square off for second straight year in NCAA Super Regional

The Virginia baseball team will play host to Maryland Friday through Sunday (June 5-7) in the 2015 NCAA Charlottesville Super Regional at Davenport Field. Game times and television networks for the best-of-three series will be announced Tuesday morning by the NCAA.

WINA 1070-AM will carry the local radio broadcast for all games of the super regional, while select stations along the Virginia Sports Radio Network also will have coverage.

The Davenport Field gates will open one hour prior to game time every day.

Virginia (37-22) is hosting a super regional for the fifth time, with each coming in the last six years (2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015). Champions of the NCAA Lake Elsinore Regional, Virginia advanced to a super regional for the sixth time in the last seven seasons; UVa and Florida State are the only schools to play in six of the last seven super regionals.

Making its second straight NCAA Super Regional appearance, Maryland (42-22) won the NCAA Los Angeles Regional, knocking out No. 1 national seed UCLA. The Terrapins made their super regional debut in 2014 in Charlottesville, where UVa took two of three games from Maryland.

The winner of the super regional will advance to the College World Series at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb. UVa has made three CWS appearances (2009, 2011, 2014).

Heads up...

Our annual publisher's conference is tomorrow followed by the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge Friday through Sunday, both in Baltimore.

I'll be on the road this afternoon and will get back to the board as soon as I can. Tomorrow we'll get set for UVa's Super Regional matchup with the Terps and I'll check in as much as I can during the all-day conference tomorrow.

As always, if folks need me the best way to get in touch over the next few days is by email.

Thanks.

Top 3 basketball goals in next 5 years

1. Make a final four and advance to Sweet 16 at least 4 of the 5 years - UVA has to go deep in the tourney. I don't think they have to win a championship to be taken seriously but they need to get over the hump in the NCAAs. Flaming out in the R32 isn't going to cut it.

2. Win another ACC tournament. The regular season "championships" are great but they need to show this isn't just unbalanced scheduling.

3. Finish in the top 4-5 in ACC and top 25 nationally all 5 seasons - this will show that UVA and Bennett are here to stay. With the current recruiting class in 2016 and potential for 2017, I feel confident that we will.

Derek Fisher

Didn't know if anyone saw this or not, but Derek Fisher's debut in High-A ball started out pretty well. He hit 2 grand slams and had 12 RBIs total. The 12 RBIs broke a record that had stood for 61 years. Just thought it was pretty cool. Any way we could get him back for the Supers?

Dude!

I am doing a few things on my computer, switching back and forth between windows. One of the windows I have a DIV1 NCAA baseball gamecast of the Maryland and UCLA game. Didn't bother putting it on ESPN3. Well, Maryland scores a run and I get excited for they were down 2-0 in the 7th. I go to ESPN3 only to find out it is on ESPNU. I go downstairs to turn on the TV and I see UCLA scoring and that Maryland had gotten out the inning with a 2-1 lead. Now I am mad because I was rooting for the wrong team on the gamecast but wait, Maryland is winning?! Just to check my sanity, I ran back upstairs to confirm that the teams are in fact inverted on the gamecast.

Well, two innings to go and maybe we can have some home games! I'd like to make a weekend out of it and stay at the Cavalier Inn.

Trea Young

Brad see in the Bossi article you pinned on Diakite that Trea Young (top 30 2017 PG) is interested in UVA. Sounds like TB is going after the best PGs in 2017 = Coleman and Young. What is your sense on recruiting for PG in 2017? Is Young a real possibility?

Ty Jerome wins 3-point shooting contest at Mary Kline Classic

Some pretty high level talent there too. Kyle Guy participated in the dunk contest as well as the 3 point contest. I'd like to know what Guy's vertical is. I knew Jerome was a fair shooter but he has shot extremely well from the arc in AAU play and continued tonight in the 3 point contest. The team on which Jerome and Kyle Guy played won the game as well. Not to steal any of Brad's thunder as he's probably prepping an article but

Virginia's two 2016 commits --- Ty Jerome and Kyle Guy --- both shined tonight. Tailor made for Charlottesville. Poised, steady, effective.

I think the word Rothstein is looking for is "winners."

Blanding named preseason All-American by Phil Steele

From UVa:

Blanding Leads Seven Cavaliers with Preseason Honors From Phil Steele
Blanding earns preseason All-America honors from Phil Steele

Phil Steele released his Preseason All-America and All-ACC teams today (June 1). Seven Cavaliers were mentioned on his preseason All-ACC team, while sophomore free safety Quin Blanding was named a fourth-team preseason All-American.

Blanding (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Maurice Canady (Richmond, Va.) were named to Phil Steele’s All-ACC first team. Ian Frye (Bristol, Va.) was named to the second team, while Andrew Brown (Chesapeake, Va.), Ross Burbank (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Eric Smith (Decatur, Ga.) all earned preseason third-team honors. David Dean (Virginia Beach, Va.) rounds out the UVa honorees with fourth-team accolades.

Blanding was the ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2014 after finishing the regular season No. 2 in the ACC with 123 tackles, while also leading the nation’s freshmen. Blanding also was named Scout.com’s National Defensive Rookie of the Year, while also earning numerous Freshman All-American distinctions from various outlets, including by Phil Steele.

Cornerback Canady was a second-team All-ACC performer in 2014 after making 37 tackles, breaking up 12 passes and recording three interceptions. His 12 pass breakups ranked No. 2 in the ACC.

Placekicker Frye was a Lou Groza Award semifinalist and a second-team All-ACC performer in 2014 after finishing the regular season No. 2 in the ACC and No. 6 in the nation with 22 field goals. His 22 field goals rank No. 2 all-time in UVa history for makes in a season.

Defensive tackle Brown saw time in six games during his first collegiate season after getting healthy from preseason injuries. He recorded four tackles and 0.5 tackles for loss. Brown was a preseason Phil Steele fourth-team All-ACC honoree last year.

Offensive linemen Burbank and Smith recorded 23 combined starts on the offensive line between them in 2014. Burbank started 11 games at center and Smith started all 12 games at right tackle. The duo helped UVa accumulate 500 yards of total offense in back-to-back games (BYU and Kent State) for the first time since 2004.

Defensive tackle Dean earned honorable mention All-ACC honors from the media and third-team recognition from the ACC coaches in 2014. He was a key cog in the middle of UVa’s defensive front seven that ranked No. 20 nationally in defending the run (120.7). A captain in 2015, Dean tallied 40 tackles and 8.0 tackles for loss in 2014.

Baseball: UVa beats USC 14-10 to win regional

From UVa:

Virginia Defeats USC, 14-10 in 11 Innings, to Win Regional Championship
Cavaliers advance to NCAA Super Regional next weekend

The Virginia baseball team won its sixth regional championship in the last seven years Sunday as the Cavaliers rallied from four runs down to earn a 14-10 win in 11 innings over Southern California at the NCAA Lake Elsinore Regional at Lake Elsinore Diamond in Lake Elsinore, Calif. The four-hour, 48-minute marathon began late on Sunday evening and extended well into Monday morning, concluding at 4:18 a.m. ET.

The third-seeded Cavaliers (37-22) advance to play the champion of the Los Angeles Regional – either UCLA or Maryland – in a best-of-three NCAA Super Regional series June 5-7 or 6-8. The Bruins and Terrapins play a decisive championship game Monday at 11 p.m. ET/8 CT.

“We’re obviously very excited that we found a way to win this regional,” Virginia head coach Brian O’Connor said. “USC has a heck of a ballclub. I’m so proud of our ballclub. It’s been noted how much our team has gone through over the course of the season. We’ve endured more than any team that I’ve coached in 12 years at Virginia, and certainly this moment is very special because of what these guys have accomplished in light of that. This particular game, it certainly wasn’t how you would draw it up, but maybe that makes it all the more special. Just the fact that our guys hung in there and found a way to get it done in the end. I’m as proud of this ball club as I’ve ever been and we’re looking forward to playing next weekend.”

Kevin Doherty (Jr., Laytonsville, Md.) hit the tie-breaking RBI double with one out in the 11th inning for the Cavaliers, spurring a five-run inning for UVa, which trailed 9-5 entering the sixth inning before rallying for a run in the sixth and three in the eighth to send the game to extra innings.

Matt Thaiss (So., Jackson, N.J.) went 2-for-3, and reached base six times, scoring three times and knocking in three runs. Adam Haseley (Fr., Windermere, Fla.) and Daniel Pinero (So., Toronto, Ontario) each scored three runs, while Kenny Towns (Sr., Burke, Va.) and Pavin Smith (Fr., Jupiter, Fla.) each drove in three runs. Virginia recorded 10 hits but also drew 14 walks in the win.

After starting pitcher Alec Bettinger (So., Woodbridge, Va.) struggled in the first inning and did not record an out, the Cavaliers’ bullpen was sensational and allowed just one earned run and five hits in 11 innings of work, including just two hits over the final seven frames. Doherty worked 3 1/3 innings before freshman Tommy Doyle (Vienna, Va.) tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings. David Rosenberger (Jr., Bethlehem, Pa.) worked four perfect innings from the seventh through 10th innings to earn the win as he improved to 3-0 on the year. Josh Sborz (Jr., McLean, Va.) pitched the 11th to seal the victory.

Pitching for the second time Sunday, USC reliever Brent Wheatley (4-4) took the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) in the 11th innings to cap his three-inning outing. USC used six pitchers in the contest. Starter Bernardo Flores allowed five runs (three earned), three hits and four walks in two innings. USC eliminated San Diego State, 12-11, in the first game of the day after scoring three runs in the ninth inning to rally for the victory.

Virginia got off to a fast start in the nightcap, scoring four first-inning runs. Haseley and Pinero hit back-to-back singles before consecutive walks to Thaiss and Towns forced in a run. Pavin Smith hit a sacrifice fly to left to make it 2-0. Robbie Coman (Jr., Lake Worth, Fa.) grounded to shortstop Reggie Southall, but the throw to second for the force play was errant, allowing Thaiss to score. Joe McCarthy (Jr., Scranton, Pa.) followed with a sac fly to right to push the lead to 4-0.

The lead was short-lived as USC countered by scoring five runs in its half of the first. After leadoff hitter Bobby Stahel was hit by the 0-2 pitch, Garrett Stubbs doubled and Jeremy Martinez hit a two-run double. Dante Flores’ two-run triple tied the game and knocked Bettinger from the contest. On the first pitch from Doherty, Blake Lacey hit a sacrifice fly to right-center field.

UVa tied the game in the second inning, taking advantage of a pair of Flores walks, as Towns lashed a two-out RBI single to left field to score Haseley.

The Trojans took the lead back with a four-run fourth inning that was aided by three UVa errors on three consecutive plays. Martinez hit a two-run single to cap the scoring and give USC a 9-5 advantage.

Virginia got a run back in the sixth inning on a Thaiss RBI single to score Doherty. UVa knotted the score 9-9 in the eighth inning as Smith hit a two-run single with the bases loaded, and when the ball skirted under Stahel’s glove in left field, Thaiss came all the way around from first to score the tying run.

The Cavaliers sent 10 batters to the plate in a five-run 11th inning. With McCarthy on second base and one out, Doherty cranked a double to right-center field to break the 9-9 deadlock. The Cavaliers loaded the bases, and Thaiss lined a single into right field, scoring Doherty and Haseley and when the ball got past AJ Ramirez, Pinero came around to score and Thaiss to advanced to third base. Towns then hit a squibber in front of the mound, but Wheatley booted it for an error, with Thaiss coming home to score and make it 14-9.

USC got an unearned run in its half of the 11th when Reggie Southall scored from third on a passed ball.

I blame myself.

After staying up until 2:30 AM to watch the Saturday game, I crashed at 1:30 AM last night after UVA was down 9-5 and failed to score in the 5th. I thought that UVA would score some more runs, but I did not think that our bullpen would hold down USC for the rest of the game. I underestimated Doyle and Rosenberger.
As much as I hate to do it, I will be pulling for Maryland today so that UVA fans can see the games in the super regionals and still get some sleep.
Congratulations to the team and coaches. They have already exceeded the expectations of most baseball "experts."
