Turnover Margin

Still early in the season but UVA is up to its old tricks in the turnover department again currently ranking 125 out of 128 in turnover margin ahead of our awesome season in 2012 when we were 117 out of 128. Rankings are as follows:

2015-125th
2014-62nd
2013-89th
2012-117
2011-108

Truly impressive. You would imagine that the bounces would occasionally go your way. ML is an overachiever in his ability to coach his players to give up the ball but refuse to accept it.

CavsCorner Video: Eric Smith

After having an admittedly rough go of it in the spring, junior offensive tackle Eric Smith won back his starting job in fall camp and said this week that he still has high hopes for the Cavaliers coming out of the bye week.

In this video interview, Smith talks about UVa's mindset after the conclusion of its non-conference schedule, how a lot of players stayed in town during the weekend of their bye week, how his relationship with new OL coach Dave Borbely has grown, how he made a decision to better himself, how he took ownership of his mistakes in the Boise State loss, and what he saw watching Pitt this past weekend.

A completely different coaching thought ...

There are going to be some coaches that have had big success in other (mostly big-time) locations that could very well be available in a few weeks. Would love to hear thoughts from the board on these names that might be coming off a firing, but have proven in the past to be good coaches at other locales ...

Charlie Strong, Butch Jones, Bret Bielema ... varying degrees of academics at the spots they have coached (Wisconsin strong, UL and UC not so much). Strong and Bielema coach more of the physical type teams, while Jones' Cinci teams were a little more speed/scheme oriented. Thoughts?

Also, OTHER than Mack, are there other coaches not coaching this year that should be on the radar?

Good take on Harbaugh and his thoughts on RS'ing

Other than QB and OL who he thinks are better with a 5th year he is open to playing other positions even if on special teams to loosen up starters not being on ST.

No right or wrong way. 5th years can vary. If I were coaching I would 40-60 my class. 40 percent play, 60 percent redshirt, 50/50 at the worst. I think next year he will play even more freshmen for speed with year 3 guys setting in to shirt more. If we get a new coach it will be neat to see their idea on this which is always hot topic on here.

Terrible luck on the OL

I know much has been made about the state of the OL the last couple of years, but the thread above about Doull, Fieler, and Tetlow being done for the year got me to thinking about the bad string of luck they've experienced within that particular unit. Those three, Olewaraju, Adeosun, Cwalina, Whitemire (in previous years), etc. Add in Kelby Johnson's situation (now on the 2-deep at UL) and it's a string of guys theoretically should have been able to put together a pretty decent five and unfortunately we've never kept 7 or 8 of them healthy/eligible concurrently.

I know much was made that we only have one 4* OL at the moment at that he is young (Moss), but if you look historically, we have NOT gone out and recruited tons of OL talent in terms of 4* and 5* guys. I think I tallied that Groh had four in his entire time here (Monroe and Albert in one class, whereas Albert was a 2* the year before out of HS, and Lipsey/Cunningham-Yates in another class) and London has had two more (Moses and Moss), so it's been much more about development for many of them. So many of our really solid linemen were 2* or 3* guys that just developed (Mihota, Bowanko, Pasztor, etc.). Hard to do that when everyone is dropping like flies due to injury.

Anyway, I wish those kids the speediest of recoveries and health in the future ... too bad it's all happening at once.

Question about London and 2016 Recruiting

The bus is almost full, but London is still out on the recruiting trail. Simple question.

1. Would Littlepage ever consider directing London--privately or publicly--a directive to cease recruiting?
2. Would this even be in our best interest?

The argument for could be that it would give London more time to focus on coaching in his last season. And that perhaps we shouldn't be allowing someone with one foot out the door deciding our future. The con argument is that you want the cupboard as full as possible for the next guy and that it basically sets a bad tone for the remainder of the season.

UVA's football SOS takes a hit.

Three of the teams that UVA has played went down to defeat yesterday. UCLA was defeated by Arizona State. Notre Dame was edged by Clemson, and Bill and Mary lost on a last second field goal to mighty Delaware. Only Boise State won by shutting out a hapless Hawaii team which was blanked for the third time this year, but Boise still did not score as many points as they did against Virginia. Meanwhile, UVA's next opponent went on the road and defeated the national title contending Hokies in Bleaksburg. It appears that UVA will almost certainly have to win at least five of their remaining eight games to get an opportunity to play in a major bowl game.
