Game Thoughts

We are a poorly coached team. Too many of the same bonehead mistakes for the last 6 years that keep us from getting to decent status.

Play calling- Mixed bag this week. Just watched the rest of the game. We almost cost ourselves by going super conservative late.

Defense- This board has worn out the back side of SF for a few years, but this defense is bad. I know we lost some pieces, but same mistakes by DB's not turning their heads when ball is in the air, playing 10 yards off the ball so teams can just throw short passes on the outside or screens. Poor tackling, can't stop the run, bad penalties at the wrong time on super bonehead stuff. Other than Kiser and a few others no one is showing up. Quin isn't playing to his preseason status, Brown should not start at DT. It's bad and JT has a few days to fix this.

Johns- He needs to be allowed to just play. If we get to a bowl game it's going to be on the back of him being our QB.

Not saying this to be rude or start anything, but even if London gets to a bowl, I don't want to see him back. We do the same stupid things week after week and when the announcing team keeps harping on us not being prepared and making really bad mistakes it's funny that the coaches complain about it, but the main reason a lot of the stuff is happening. We're just not a very well coached football team and today's game shows that. Really hope this was just a case of looking ahead because Boise State can really run the football and if we don't attempt to stop the run our pass rush we will be obsolete and they could score 50 on us.

Why I love Kyle Guy..

“2016 is going to be special. It doesn’t matter if other people think it’s realistic but we are going in with the mindset of winning four national championships and we are all firm believers of that,” wrote Guy, a senior combo guard out of Lawrence Central High School in Indianapolis (IN), in a Twitter direct message.

Just have to love this kid!! Folks we WILL win multiple National Championships in hoops by 2020. BELIEVE IT!!

Hunters comment in his recruitment article sums it up as well- Guy was the toughest player to defend.

I know we have a football game today, but for this Hoo, just counting the days until hoops starts

FSU

Has anyone been impressed with them so far? Their defense is dangerously good, but I've actually been a little more impressed with Clemson than I have with FSU thus far. Just like the rest, with the ACC as a whole I haven't been super impressed with most teams which is why I feel like we have a chance against anyone if we can just stop the big plays on defense and get a few on offense. Will be interesting to see how Georgia Tech plays Notre Dame today. I really feel we can get five wins in the league if we play well starting today.

Two points before everyone gets excited ...

I will post this because I think it must be said ...

1) For those excited by the near-miss Saturday, a broken ankle went a long way as to why a last second TD was needed by the Fighting Amish. I'm not saying UVa wouldn't have been close, or at least closer than expected, as they played pretty darn well to that point. But, we do have to examine the fact that the Hoos were down a couple of touchdowns a couple of times in the second half of that game (I think 12 points actually, so we needed two TDs or a boatload of FGs). The lack of ND offense for much of the second half obviously helped both our O and D. Flip the script for Johns going out in that game and UVa having its spring QB-3 in the game and things get ugly. As it was, it just kept UVa (very) close.

2) We've seen this movie before. Team splits pair of tough opening games (think the years we beat BYU, Penn State, or Louisville) or is much more competitive against a good team than expected (think USC in '10 and UCLA last season). We are optimistic. Week 3 or 4 is the high-water mark. Injuries or competition cause the back half of the season to be less than fun, to put it kindly. At this point, I think it is safe to say that 2011 was the outlier, not the other four seasons we have witnessed. Therefore, what, praytell, makes anyone think this year will be different? We magically stay healthy all season and get everyone back that is missing? No one else gets better than us, as is usually the case? We are far enough ahead in six games that coaching decisions don't matter?

I'm sorry, but about 30-60 seconds after Kizer-to-Fuller Saturday and while still in shock, I turned to my brother and said, "I'm going to look at the positives ... we're still on track to need a new coach at the end of the season and finally get the program moving forward again IF they can get the hire right. A win might have f'ed that up." Optimism in this instance involves having the same set of data and expecting a different outcome, and we all know what defines ...

UVa hoops announces time/TV for eight more games

For UVa to win the hoops national title, these 3 things need to happen...

What are your 3? And I'm not really talking about factors we know...like Malcolm performs at an All-ACC level. Or AG is our solid #2 option. For me, the 3 are...

1. Tobey becomes a consistent 12 & 7 guy, playing 25-27 mpg.

2. LP & Evan become consistent 3 PT shooters. Both have been in the past for stretches, but both were off last year.

3. An interior defensive stopper emerges...Wilkins is the most likely candidate.

Those 3 things happen, and there's no one we can't beat.

Anyone feeling better about team after ND-

I actually have hope. Yes we are 0-2, but like Arden has said many times, playing this schedule can only make us better going into ACC. Yes, our big game comes next Friday night, but I really would like to see us beat William and Mary by 30. Defense will only get better and once Thorpe comes back this offense will look pretty darn scary if we keep calling aggressive games from now on while letting Johns grow into a solid quarterback. 2-2 will get us to a bowl. I really think 4-2 after 6 is very do-able if we avoid injuries.
