Passing Game

Not a coach, but have watched a million hours of football and have to say the passing game looked horrible. Johns never gets his feet set and steps into the throw. He had some short completions that were ok but a lot of the time he is running toward the sideline and throws the ball while on the move without planting his feet. Not sure how to credit the UCLA pass rush, but I don't believe it was all their doing. His technique looks bad. I don't recall this from last year.

Strength of schedule

My nephew, a Tech graduate, told me VT was trying to change from us being their end of year rival game because we are killing their strength of schedule. Yes, they all laughed at another UVA football is bad joke but isn't that close to the truth. Some of the folks that used to talk trash to me about football just look at me sadly now as if someone close to me has died and do not talk college football to me anymore. I always pull for UVA but things are not the same.

Boise State Tickets?

Hey fellow Hoos!

Anyone have any lower level tickets for the game against Boise State that they would like to sell? I am looking for 2 tickets. My wife and I can finally make a game together (we have a babysitter for the kids), so I would love some good seats for the game. Ideally, something near midfield.

Thanks!

GO HOOS!!!!

Why I'm STILL Positive On The Season

Again, I'm no Mike London apologist. Not only do I think he's unqualified but I legitimately think he should take an IQ test. That being said, here's a few things to make me feel better. Maybe it will do the same for you.

1. Obviously, we were beaten by a more talented team today. We stuck with them for a half, and then they pulled away. Disappointing, but not surprising. It happened to George Welsh all the time, even with some of our better teams. Not going to play this level of talent every game.

2. To me the biggest reason we lost today was not our playcalling, but our offensive line. Simply put, they just didn't get the job done in any facet of the game. Perhaps they are just not talented, in which case this is going to be a long season. But I think they will ultimately learn to play together and improve as the season goes on.

3. Matt Johns. I continue to believe in him. He may never become a superstar, but he doesn't get rattled and doesn't make too many mistakes. And if he gets better as the year goes on, as I suspect he will, well surprise a few people near the end of the season.

Call me crazy, but I'm still confident in a 6 to 7 win campaign.

Dean's comment after the game

About them not being ready for up tempo- are you kidding me? The way you keep a JT defense off of you is by playing with more tempo. Even Beamer tries it and that fan base gets on their OC just as much as we get on Fairchild. It's these types of things that really get to me with this staff. First game can be tough to know what teams might do, but good teams prepare for everything and the fact we weren't prepared to go uptempo or didn't try going uptempo late in the game ourselves is a very troubling sign that I hope is fixed starting Saturday. Win or lose we must see improvement on coaching details and personnel issues with this team.

CavsCorner Video: Matt Johns

Junior quarterback Matt Johns had things to like about his season debut last Saturday against UCLA but plenty he knows needs work.

In this video interview, Virginia's starting signal caller discusses that game, the need for the Cavaliers to get touchdowns when they're in the red zone, how some of his new pieces on offense played, and how prepared the Wahoos are to face storied Notre Dame this weekend in the team's home opener.

We will win more than one game this year.

All this talk about going 1-11 is frustration-induced morosity. Some of you guys should be on suicide watch.

We're not the complete disaster some of you think. We're not good, but we'll win 3-5, with 6 not out of the question and 7 within the realm of possibility, although it would shock me.

We're slightly better on offense than last year and while it's hard to tell to what degree, we seem a little worse on defense. I trust Tenuta to improve the defense. Johns is going to do well this season.

It's not going to be much fun, but we'll get a few wins and when it's all said and done a new head coach.

That's the silver lining that should bolster our spirits through the season. This chapter of UVA football is closing. A new day is coming.

A friend at ND sent me a copy of their defensive game plan this week

First down - Stack the box. Virginia runs all the time.
Second down - Stack the box. Virginia runs all the time.
Third down - It's always third and long because of downs 1 & 2. Use a nickel or dime defense because they'll be passing.

Red Zone defense - One play only - block the field goal attempt. Virginia doesn't try to get into the end zone.

Here's one for you!

For those who have used Rocco and Strauss as examples of our not getting the best out of our quarterbacks, does that same thing apply to David Watford? In the season opener for Hampton University, Watford was 22 of 37 for 345 yards and 5 touchdowns. Perhaps as those with more level heads have stated, there is a big difference between the level of football at a BCS school and a non- BCS school. Still, I am glad for Watford that he gets to play and enjoy some success.

The one thing from yesterday that I liked and could save the season

Matt Johns- other than a few plays when everything was going downhill I thought he carried himself very well. We must put the ball in his hands to have shots at winning and get rid of this power running game crap. We need to use his arm and his feet as our weapon and let that set up the run game. If I'm UVA I am not having him under center very much letting him be in shotgun and kind of freelance back there. We run draws and out of the shotgun, spread the field and give him the opportunity 3 to 5 times a game to pick up his feet. The staff was trying to hard to be something we can't be and we actually have a quarterback that I feel decent about as long as he stays healthy. That UCLA team is very good and I thought when the play calls were decent he made plays like a D1 QB.
