Talked to Borbs and Beatty...

Just a couple of notes from my conversation with the two new assistant coaches:

OL coach Dave Borbely talked about the depth on the OL, calling it "decent" but saying they were in good shape. He's settled on what he "knows it should be" but he wants to make sure that it's how he wants to go with things next week. They've spent some time on UCLA by this point and it's going to be the best front 7 UVa sees all year long. He called the Bruins a "big challenge." He also mentioned that Eric Smith and Jake Fieler have really battled at RT and so far, he's seen Fieler have a great camp following a very good summer but Borbs thinks he's ultimately going to be an interior guy. In the spring, Smith was No. 2 "by a lot" but he really came on in training camp. "Right now, he's probably our most valuable guy," Borbs said. Overall, he's seen the type of growth in all of his guys that he was hoping to see. "Absolutely," he said simply. Borbs also said he told the guys "the bad news" in the spring that he wouldn't be playing "offensive line roulette" any longer. He wants five guys who play the vast majority of the game.

Meanwhile, RB coach Chris Beatty said Taquan Mizzell has really responded well to his challenge in the spring and he's had a great, great camp, above and beyond what he had hoped. He's running a lot more like they wanted him to, one cut and taking what the defense gives him. Albert Reid, meanwhile, is a "load" and he's a hard worker that Beatty knew from having recruited him would be a guy who came in with a great attitude. On the running game and game planning for UCLA, Beatty said working with the offensive staff has been good. Borbs has done this for a long time and Beatty believes he compliments him well. Beatty said he's been fortunate to work with both the running game and the passing game. UCLA has a really good team with a lot of guys back. There are a lot of future NFL guys on that side of the ball. Olamide Zaccheaus has been working more with the WRs but they look at him like a hybrid type of guy. The fastest way to help the team is to split him and use him that way but that doesn't mean he can't help in other ways either. Beatty said there's a bit of hierarchy at times but right now they've legitimately got four guys they want to use at RB and match the personnel with the other guys to make the best 11 for whatever the task is at hand. He admits he's hard a hard time getting a feel for who's ahead among the four. He mentioned that there will be some packages where they use some of these guys together.

Look for feature stories coming tomorrow and early next week.

Top five coming for DT Kamara

I watch DT Sulaiman Kamara practice the other day and he told me he will name a top five at the end of the month. North Carolina, Wake Forest and Indiana will make the cut. He is going to visit South Carolina on September 12. An offer could be a game changer. Virginia, East Carolina and Penn State are still in the mix. Penn State could move up his list if room at defensive tackle opens up in this recruiting class. Kamara will take official visits after the season.

Pants on Fire!

I keep reading that we are completely committed to establishing a power running game, again. We keep hearing this year after year but can't actually get it done. I would assume that this coaching staff knows that it's days are numbered and that this year will decide it all. Makes sense to commit to the run, but Fairchild better be ready to gamble for the big play. For the past two years, I could predict the next play. That just isn't going to work. We are going to have to zig when we should be zagging. We just aren't good enough to line up and telegraph the play and hope it succeeds. We will need to fake punt inside our 30. Play action and throw it deep even before we establish the run because we know the other team expects vanilla. We should have a random play calling strategy and play like our PANTS ARE ON FIRE!!!!

Bud Foster

They just had a story on the local news about Bud Foster saying that the football program would consider taking money from players stipends paid to them this year in the form of disciplinary fines similar to what they do in bowl games. It was reported that Tech has taken money out of players' bowl stipends for disciplinary things such as curfew violations or personal fouls. The Tech AD said those things will stop immediately. And kids want to play for this redneck, hillbilly!

Johns Severin chemistry

They are roommates both from the North East and have put in a ton of time working out. For me visions of that hook up in the UCLA game on a 3rd and 5 for a 30 yd gain come to mind. I posted last year that I thought Johnson was going to have a big year 2014, didn't happen. Hopefully Johnson will have a much better year. In light of Thorpe being out, the combo of 15 and 9 just might be the difference in a couple of Ws. If the ground game improves say 20% we might see these two guys have some better days.

It's almost football season so my old arssss is back drinking Hoo Kool AId. Taste way better than the market.

Do you guys agree it takes 5-6 years to build a football program?

Found this article quite interesting, so I wanted to see what people thought. Obviously that timeframe is up here and as we've all documented a move should've been made last year, but there've been other instances where coaches been able to turn around within 3 to 4. The old-school rule was obviously a lot of coaches get through a dull recruiting cycle before making a call but a lot of schools for many reasons are waiting that long and as we've probably shown waited a year too long to make a move. This could very well be us next season and I honestly don't think it would take 5 to 6 years if you get the right coach who either knows how to recruit and use talent or is good enough as a coach that they can adapt to the talent they are given to be successful. Personally I feel if it takes you 5 to 6 years unless the trajectory is going up a school should probably move on.
