Losing 3 out of 5 down the stretch is the harsh reality

We were never in this game today and the offense, as it has been for a while now, was atrocious. We knew that one of these scoring droughts would eventually get us and it most certainly did. With that said 30-4 is one hell of a season, but I am so clearly reminded of the agony of being a Hoo fan. I hate Colin Cowherd and all his vitriole against the Hoos, but no one can love that woeful offense. Keep the defense, it rocks, but get us some shooters! Hopefully some of the young guys will step up. Another piece of good news is that I doubt anyone leaves other than Atkins. The nucleus should be awesome for next year!

Now we just have to suffer through football unless baseball decides to do something. Ugh.

Thanks for the historic season!

I'm heartbroken and angry. No rational explanation will convince me that the NCAA doesn't have it out against UVA's brand of basketball, since we got paired against a well-coached MSU team that plays well against a similarly oriented defensive-minded team in UW.

That said, these last two years have been the best two years of UVA ball I can remember. I wasn't paying attention much as a kid in the early 90s. I wish we could've sent Darion out on a high note a little later. JA's injury killed a lot of mojo and we didn't have time to gel with him again. But this team tied the all-time wins for a season for UVA, put on some defensive clinics, and was chock full of highlights. UVA is here to stay.

I'm eager to see what Darius Thompson brings in terms of ball-handling and shooting ability. I'm hoping Gill can work on the shooting touch in the off-season and turn in a Mike Scott-like performance. I'm hoping like hell that Mike Tobey eats nothing but raw bloody steak and lifts weights and works on catching drills all season (and I'm a vegetarian!). I'm hoping we can figure out what's gotten into Evan Nolte (team psychologist perhaps?) and that he can shoot his way out of it. I'm anticipating that Salt will play like a big man, and the guards will get better, and that we'll learn from this.

I'm really hoping its final four or bust next season, too. In the meantime I'll mourn a little and move on.

I still support my team

We had our worst case scenario today and just couldn't get it done. Trice was red hot, Anderson never returned to form, and Malcolm didn't have a great game.

We still hung tough and a few different things in the last 8 minutes could have made for a different result.

I'm more disappointed than I expected. We were a better team. I'm just sorry we didn't play up to our potential the last few games. The timing of Anderson's injury and return really hurt us.

We'll be back. The dreaded "next year", but we really will have a great team next year, so we just have to shake this off and get ready to enjoy next season's great play.

Love this team.

Go Hoos!

Listen!

It was just not to be. We did not hit enough free throws or 3s. Not only that, we had some bad calls and we just didn't get the bounces we needed. That JA foul and seeing the ball roll right off the rim, I just had a feeling it was not our day. Look at some of the shots they hit. It all went there way. They had to play a great game against the odds and it just didn't happen. This team never really recovered from JA's injury. In all they still had one heck of a season. It was just a very unfortunate season. Through it all they still had a great season. Just bad timing. Could we have won that game, sure but the deck definitely felt like it was stacked against us at the end of the season. Heck, look at the Louisville game as well. That guy hadn't shot in forever and to hit that shot was crazy. Oh well. I think this team could have won it all if JA didn't get hurt. We will never know but that is just my opinion.

Pressure

I was praying an ACC team would lose yesterday because most of the media already hates us and this matchup is a tough one. We have the final four right in our sights if we can win today. I think we can pull it out close if we stop Dawson and Valentine.

OT: interesting article in Bloomberg on NCAA basketball fund

This is a very well done in depth article on how the March Madness money gets distributed among D1 schools. No surprise that the big conferences are top takers. The Big 10 is at the top with MSU bringing in the most. What is interesting is how much money schools in the Big 10 have made even thought they have contributed 0 $, like Northwestern, yet they have received about $24.5 million over the past 30 years.

Baseball: Hoos drop second game to FSU

From UVa:

Florida State Blasts Its Way Past Virginia, 12-10
Seminoles hit four home runs to even the series, 1-1

No. 11 Florida State (18-6, 6-2 ACC) powered its way to a 12-10 victory over No. 7 Virginia (14-6, 3-5 ACC) on Saturday (March 21) at Davenport Field.

The Seminoles hit four home runs, including a grand slam from John Sansone in the fifth inning and two home runs in the ninth, to down the Cavaliers and even the series at a game apiece.

Virginia scored two runs in the bottom of the first on a double to center from Pavin Smith (Fr., Jupiter, Fla.) and a single from Kenny Towns (Sr., Burke, Va.), a lead that held up until the top of the fifth when a walk, hit batter and a single set up a bases-loaded, one-out jam for starter Connor Jones (So., Chesapeake, Va.). Jones walked in a run before surrendering the homer to left field by Sansone. The Seminoles plated a sixth run on a sac fly surrendered by David Rosenberger (Bethlehem, Pa.) four batters later.

Virginia got one run back in the bottom of the fifth when Towns drew a bases-loaded walk. In the seventh inning, Towns again drew a bases-loaded walk to start a five-run rally. Matt Thaiss (So., Jackson, N.J.) hit a sac-fly to drive in the second run of the inning. Kevin Doherty (Jr., Laytonsville, Md.) walked to drive in the third run before Robbie Coman (Jr., Lake Worth, Fla.) singled to center to drive in a pair and tie the game, 8-8.

After FSU's D.J. Stewart hit a solo homer in the top of the eighth, Towns doubled down the left field line to drive in a run and tie the game in the bottom of the inning. Thaiss hit a sac fly to add a second eight-inning run and give Virginia a 10-9 lead heading into the ninth.

Virginia closer Josh Sborz (Jr., McLean, Va.) took the mound in the ninth inning, issuing a lead-off walk which was followed by a home run by Dylan Busby. The Seminoles added a third run on a two-out homer from Danny De La Calle.

Sborz took the loss, working 0.2 inning, allowing two hits that scored three earned runs, with a walk and no strikeouts. Jones, the starter, went 4.1 innings, allowing six earned runs on two hits with six walks and six strikeouts.

Dylan Silva earned the win in relief for the Seminoles, working 1.2 innings, allowing one hit, walking two and striking out two.

Virginia's seven pitchers combined to issue 12 walks, striking out seven. Florida State's six pitchers combined for nine walks and seven strikeouts.

Towns went 2-for-3 with a run scored and four driven in. Daniel Pinero (So., Toronto, Ontario) was 3-for-5 with three runs scored.

The series continues Sunday at 1 p.m. WINA 1070-AM will have the radio broadcast of the Saturday and Sunday games. Live audio will be available online at VirginiaSports.com for each game of the series as part of the Cavaliers Live subscription package. Live statistics also will be available. The audio and live stats also can be accessed through the Virginia Sports app, which is available through iTunes.

I have come to realize something about Malcolm.

He has a real mean streak. He does not like to lose or failure and takes it out on the opponent. Last year, you would see a vicious dunk here and there and be like, "where did that come from?' His mean streak was real evident in the past two games. I watched the UNC game with my wife and a friend. Both of them kept remarking about how Malcolm's demeanor never changes and how deathly serious he looks. Then yesterday you saw it again when he was 0-6 from the floor in the second half and went for the tomahawk slam. Friends, that was a mean streak on display.

Worst baseball game in a long time.

FSU won 12 - 10. They had 8 hits, 4 of which were home runs, and 12 walks. UVA had 9 hits and 9 walks. The pitchers and the home plate umpire combined for 21 walks. The difference in the game was when our pitchers got behind, FSU took the ball deep. At least 8 of their runs were the result of their 4 home runs. Jones had a no-hitter for 4 innings, but then loaded the bases on two walks and a single before giving up a grand slam in the 5th. We went through 7 relief pitchers and only Casey was remotely successful. We went ahead in the bottom of the 8th 10 - 9 and took Casey out and brought in Sborz to pitch the 9th. He gave up a walk to the first batter and then 2 home runs which led to the final score.

The offensive stars for UVA were Pinero, who was 3 for 5, Towns, who was 2- for 3 with 4 RBI, and Coman, who was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI.

Round of 32 Media Day notes...

Greetings again from the TWC Arena, where Michigan State and UVa are set to meet with members of the media beginning in about 20 minutes.

We'll get players from MSU and then Tom Izzo before we get Virginia players and Tony Bennett thereafter. I'm going to do the live thread of the pressers today rather than fight the scrum in the locker room for video content so check back in a bit for notes...
