Virginia heads to Omaha with 10 - 4 win over Kansas State

Like grapes, hits are better when they come in bunches. The Hoos got 11 of their 13 hits in the 1st, 5th, and 9th innings and scored 9 of their 10 runs in these innings. Saucke, Ford, and Becker each had 2 hits. Hanson led the RBI list with 3 on a pinch hit bases clearing double in the 9th. Ference had a 2 RBI triple in the same inning, and Ford had a 2 RBI single in the 5th. All ten of the Virginia runs were scored with two outs.
Woolfolk pitched another solid game and earned the win by pitching 6.1 innings in which he gave up 3 runs on 6 hits while striking out 7 Kansas State batters. Tonas pitched .2 innings and allowed 1 hit and 1 run. Hungate pitched the final two innings and retired all six batters that he faced. In the four post season games, our relief pitchers allowed just 1 run.

Game 1 of Super Regional

Not going our way so far. Routine pop fly to CF by first batter gets lost in the sun for a triple. Scores on grounder to right side. In top of third KSU adds two runs. Virginia has threatened, but nothing to show for it. Punch and Judy pitcher giving us fits. I have to think that changes.

Hate the coverage. Producer insists on jumping around a lot, then going to the view from behind the pitcher at the last instant, often late. Hopefully someone tells him to cut it out. Not in the bottom of the third. Double play with men in first and second. This one is not feeling good so far.

Virginia overcomes a sluggish start to defeat Kansas State 7 -4

The first Kansas State batter hit a routine fly ball into center field that turned into a triple when it was lost in the late afternoon sun. He scored on an infield out to give KS a 1-0 lead. The lead went to 3-0 in the third when the leadoff batter hit a single, and the next batter was hit by a pitch; they both advanced on an infield out and scored on a double. Virginia did not score until the fifth inning when O'Ferrall led off with a walk. Whalen followed by hitting to the third baseman, who threw the ball away; KS attempted to get O'Ferrall at third, but he was safe, and Whalen went to second on the throw A sacrifice fly by Saucke scored O'Ferrall, and Whalen scored on an infield out. Virginia took a 4-3 lead in the sixth when Godbout and Anderson singled, and both came home on double by O'Ferrall. Kansas State tied the score at 4 on a solo home run in the seventh before Virginia took the lead for good when Saucke was hit by a pitch, Ference walked, and Godbout hit a three run home run.
Blanco started on the mound for Virginia and pitched the first seven innings and allowed all four runs on 5 hits; he struck out 9. Tonas pitched the next 1.1 innings, and Augustin got the final two batters. Neither allowed a KS batter to reach first safely. Blanco was the winning pitcher to give him a 8-3 record.
Virginia's offense was limited to 9 hits - 6 singles, 2 doubles, and 1 home run.

Virginia earns a Super Regional birth with 9 - 2 win against Mississippi State

Virginia scored in the 1st inning when O'Ferrall doubled and came home on a single by Ford. MSU took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning on a 2 run home run. Virginia took the lead for good in the 3rd inning when a walk to O'Ferrall, singles by Whalen, Ford, and Ference produced 2 more runs. There was no more scoring until the top of the 9th when 4 walks and 4 singles gave Virginia a 9-2 lead.
Woolfolk started and pitched what many would consider to be his best outing as a Virginia pitcher. After giving up 2 hits and 2 runs in the 1st, he scattered 6 more hits and 0 runs over the next 7+ innings. After allowing a single to the first batter in the 9th, he was relieved by Hungate who got the first batter he faced to hit into a double play and then struck out the final batter.
After O'Ferrall's double in the 1st inning, Virginia had 9 more hits, all of which were singles, and drew 5 walks, 3 of which scored.. Virginia was helped by 3 MSU errors.
Nothing is certain, but it seems that Virginia could host Kansas state in the supers.
