Danielle Collins Update

After a difficult loss at the Australian Open in January, Danielle Collins announced she would retire at the end of the season. She’s had some health difficulties - including both rheumatoid arthritis and endometriosis – but she played through those challenges and has had a pretty successful career. It seems the retirement announcement provided some mental clarity for her because she has been on an absolute tear since then. She’s won two tournaments in the last couple of months, has won 19 of her last 20 matches, beat some of the best players in the world, and added $1.6M to her bank account this year. She plays in the semifinals of the Italian Open tomorrow against the #2 ranked player in the world, Aryna Sabalenka. Winning the Italian Open would land her another $800k and it’s the last clay court tournament before the French Open (one of three remaining Grand Slams this year). She may go into the French Open ranked in the top 10. I’d love for her to get a Grand Slam title before she retires. That trophy would look great next two her two national championship trophies from her time on Grounds. I’m happy for her – she’s had some ups and downs but nothing’s holding her back from going out with a bang.

Virginia wins an upside down game 5 - 4 over Mississippi State

Yogi Berra infamously said, "Good pitching beats good hitting, and vice versa." Baseball fans saw some of each yesterday. Virginia scored the first 2 runs in the 2nd inning when Becker hit a triple off the outfield wall. MSU answered with a 3 run home run in the top of the 3rd, and added an unearned run in the 4th when an attempted pick off throw by Blanco sailed into centerfield. Augustin came in to pitch for Virginia and got himself in and out of trouble by giving up 2 hits and 3 walks in the next 2.2 innings. Tonas came in to pitch with 2 outs and a runner in scoring position in the 9th. The MSU batter grounded out on his first pitch to get the win for Tonas.
The bottom five hitters in the Virginia batting order got 7 of the team's 8 hits, scored all 5 runs, and had s all 5 RBI. Becker had 2 more RBI in the 7th on a single to tie the score. In the bottom of the 9th, Didawick led off with double, and Godbout walked. With one out Whalen hit a hard shot which the MSU second baseman was unable to catch, and Didawick scored the walk off run.

Savino, Hungate, and Godbout lead Virginia in 4 - 2 win over Penn

Savino and Hungate held Penn to 2 runs on 4 hits. They gave up just 1 walk and struck out 11. Penn got 3 of their hits in the 4th inning when they scored their only 2 runs. Godbout's 3 run home run in the 2nd inning provided the winning margin. Virginia added another run in the 7th when O'Ferrall singled, stole second, and came home on a double by Anderson. Virginia threatened to score in several innings as the team received 7 walks and 2 hit batters, but they were unusually unreliable hitting with runners in scoring position.

Blanco and Augsutin shut down a good hitting Tech team. Blanco pitched 6 innings and gave up just 5 singles, and Augustin retired all three batters that he face in the 7th. OT - WNBA

Until this year, I have never watched a WNBA game, This year I decided to watch a couple of games on television primarily to see if Caitlan Clark would prove the Goat or the Over- rated predictions to be correct. I quickly discovered why I had not previously watched the WNBA. For the most part, the WNBA is just bad basketball. When Virginia got blown out in games last year, there were many reasons proposed for the poor performances. Almost all apply to every WNBA game. Many players can't jump over the Sunday newspaper (about 1 inch for those who do not subscribe to the local newspaper). As a result, many routine layups are mulligans. Officiating is bad, and the officials spend way too much time looking at the TV monitors at mid court. Coaching decisions about who should be playing or what play to run are suspect.
Clark is still bringing crowds to watch her play in person or on television. I question whether she and a handful of others in the WNBA will be able to hold the attention of viewers even when the only sports competition is major league baseball.

Who didn't see this train wreck coming with NIL in college sports

You just saw this coming with NIL and narcissistic athletes along with greedy family members. For all the good intentions, you can't over look the elephant in the room of bad intentions.

Former Florida recruit and current Georgia quarterback Jaden Rashada is suing Gators coach Billy Napier and the program’s top booster over a failed name, image and likeness deal worth nearly $14 million.

The lawsuit filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Pensacola alleges Napier and booster and automotive technology businessman Hugh Hathcock with fraudulent misrepresentation and inducement, aiding and abetting fraud, civil conspiracy to commit fraud, negligent misrepresentations, tortious inference with a business relationship or contract, aiding and abetting tortious interference and vicarious liability. The complaint seeks a jury trial and damages of at least $10 million.

Sadly, this will be a door opening that coaches, Universities and teams don't need. The he said she said and when Athletes that waffle and have the NIL pulled try to gain the cash through sympathetic monday morning jurors that can be manipulated for the out come you want.
