NCSU takes game #1 7 - 5

In a game resembling some other post exam games, the team did not play well. The Hoos jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first inning on a 3 run home run by Ference and did not score again until the 8th inning. In spite of having either the first, or second, or both batters reach base in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th innings, we failed to score. Only a 2 run home run by Becker in the 8th prevented eight innings of shut out pitching by the Wolfpack.
Blanco starred on the mound and gave up 3 hits and 1 run to the first three batters. He pitched well after that until he was hurt by poor fielding in the 5th inning. Saucke dropped a fairly routine fly ball in right field to start the inning. The next batter singled before a double play left a runner on 3rd with 2 outs. The next batter hit a high pop up in first base foul ground. Anderson apparently lost the ball in the lights and it landed about ten feet away from him. On the next pitch the State batter hit home run to tie the score at 3. Hungate came in to pitch in the 7th inning and gave up 2 runs on a walk and 3 singles tp give State a 5-3 lead. Barker came in and got the final out in the 7th. He gave up a hit in the 8th, and with 1 out, Woolfolk came in a allowed a 2 run home run before getting the next two batters out. This was evidence of my "rule" that Woolfolk should no be forced to pitch from the stretch. He gave up a home run to the only batter he faced while pitching from the stretch while retiring all five batters when pitching from a windup. These 2 runs were the difference in the final score.
The Virginia batters only had 7 hits in the game. Anderson and Becker each had 2 hits.

Virginia takes #2 9 - 5 over NCSU

Savino started on the mound and pitched 5 innings allowing 3 hits and 1 run to earn his first win at Virginia. Tonas followed and retired all six batters in the 6th and 7th innings. After allowing a lead off single in the 8th, Tonas was relieved by Osinski, who gave up 3 consecutive singles. A fielders choice allowed another run, which cut the Virginia lead to 6-3.. Teel got the final out in the 8th inning before a walk and home run in the 9th ended the scoring .
Virginia started the scoring in the 3rd inning; Hanson singled and scored on a double by O'Ferrall, who scored on a single by Whalen. In the 4th, Anderson doubled and scored on Godbout's double. to extend the lead to 3-0. After the Wolfpack scored in the top of the 5th Saucke singled and scored on a home run by Ford. Ference followed with another home run to give the Hoos a 6-1 lead.. In the 8th Godbout walked, and O'Ferrall singled, and both scored on another single by Whalen who also scored on a double by Saucke to give Virginia a 9-3 lead.
Virginia had 14 hits which included 6 doubles and 2 home runs. Ford's home run gave him the #1 place for first years at Virginia.

Transfer Commitment! TJ Power to UVa

UVa gets the commit from TJ Power in the old-fashioned bounce-back transfer recruitment. The former Duke wing chose UVa over ACC rivals Wake, BC, VT and Notre Dame and has three years remaining. He was the #22 player in the 2023 class, making him the second highest-ranked commit of the Bennett era (Austin Nichols also #17, hopefully this goes better).

Everyone played in 18 - 5 win over George Washington

Virginia jumped out to a 14 - 1 lead after 4 innings and began clearing the bench. By the time that the game ended after 6 and 1/2 innings, 14 position players and 10 pitchers had made an appearance for Virginia. Moore started on the mound and pitched 2 scoreless innings. The only other pitcher with more than 1 full inning was Woolfolk, who retired all 5 batters that he faced and earned the win to make his record 2-1 this season.
Six different Hoos hit home runs - Anderson, Didawick, Teel, Stephan, Whalen, and Becker. Godbout was 4 for 5, O'Ferrall and Stephon were both 3 for 4, and Anderson, Saucke, and Whalen each had 2 of the team's 20 hits. Virginia had 7 stolen bases and were led by O'Ferrall with 3 and Didawick with 2 including stealing home on a double steal.

Transfer Commitment! (Walk-On): Carter Lang is a Wahoo

The former Vanderbilt big man announced his commitment to UVa, and we're told it's for a walk-on spot. Lang played at STAB in Charlottesville before spending one year in Nashville with the Commodores. He was a 3-star prospect in the 2023 class, picking Vandy over Stanford. He played 11.5 minutes per game at Vanderbilt this year, appearing in 24 contests; he averaged 1.8ppg and 3.5rpg.

Obviously Lang is a walk-on to start, but UVa could opt to put him on scholarship if they had an open spot (they currently have one, TBD how they'll use it, or if they will pocket it).

Closing the book on Trent Perry’s recruitment…

I just want to pass along some info on all that’s gone into the last few days leading into today’s news that UVa has been told by Trent Perry that he isn’t going to be coming.

The best way I can describe this entire situation is that everyone around the kid (parents, HS folks, the training world, etc) did all they could to get him to come to UVa and it just never could happen. Whether he didn’t want to come across the country (which has been the consistent theme from all sources) or if it was something else, we don’t truly know because the kid himself hasn’t been talking to people. That’s important to keep in mind. At no point, at least to our knowledge, was he ever a silent commit or anything. (To that point: As I discussed on the podcast, my Forecast for him was not because it was done; I’ve never used that feature that way. Some folks certainly do but to me, having data that makes you think something is happening is a forecast. That’s not the same thing as knowing it has happened and so when I know something is done done, I don’t do the Forecast thing. Given the info I had at the time I put that thing in, I would very likely still do it again.)

As of this week, the universal expectation remained that UVa would be the eventual pick. As everyone seems to know, per a source that asked we keep it close, on Friday his transcripts moved through admissions. That fueled a lot of the perceived momentum. Also on Friday, word from sources was that Warley had committed. That also fueled optimism on Perry from some sources. By Saturday morning, the Warley news broke and the expectation was Perry would likely follow suit within the next day or so, which was the long thought timeframe.

Several hours later in the afternoon, UVa (for reasons that still perplex me) put out a “bat signal” tweet that seemed in relatively quick hindsight to be about Warley. At the exact same time, though, a confluence of multiple sources passed along what they believed was good intel on Perry and that it was either done or happening. Not too long after, confusion lifted and there was a resetting of the deck. Through the night last night, this thing went back and forth. Even as late as this morning, sources on the west coast had flipped from UCLA last night to UVa this morning.

I know this is a tough beat and there’s no way to frame it otherwise. I feel pretty confident in saying that UVa did about as much as it could possibly do (OV, PT, and especially NIL) to get him short of TB camping out in his driveway like a crazy person.

It’s the strangest recruitment I can remember since the entire time UVa seemed to be recruiting against air. But if the kid doesn’t want to come, you can’t make him. And unfortunately for the Hoos, that’s the bottom line on this one.

Women’s Basketball Portal

Looks like Smith and Pauley are leaving in addition to the many seniors. As far as I’ve heard we have just one incoming HS player coming in and no transfers so far (unless I’ve missed something). That leaves us with Johnson, Clark, Brown, Vaughn, Nolan, McGhee and possibly McLean if she comes back plus the one recruit for our roster. That is just 7 or 8 players right now. We certainly have a chance to add some solid transfers, but haven’t heard any news on players we are looking at. Has anyone heard anything on the women’s front?
